LES NUBIANS

Birchmere Music Hall, 3701 Mt. Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, VA
Wednesday, July 8, 2009, 7:30pm

Born in Bordeaux, France, but raised for several years in Chad, sisters, Hélène and Célia Faussart, put a very modern spin on European black music in the late 90s and early 00s. Their skillful cross genre fusion of the smooth hip-hop sounds of Arrested Development and De La Soul, the club-based soul music of Soul II Soul and Des'ree, and traditional African roots music, became a notable US success in 1999. The sisters' French father and Cameroonian mother encouraged them to sing from an early age, and their time in Africa exposed the girls to a wide spectrum of music.

Tickets: 29.50 / (703) 549-7500

More info: www.ticketmaster.com…

The theme for 2009 is “Reaching Back to Yesterday to Save Tomorrow.”

Saturday, July 11, 2009 will feature a health fair, including HIV/AIDS and other medical screenings, along with activities such as youth boxing, clowns, face painting, a live music concert, dance, and motivational speakers. These activities will include a tribute to the late O.D. Dickerson, founder of the Faces Project, which promotes health fairs for African, African American, and Latino men.

Sunday, July 12, 2009 is devoted to an all-day Gospel Explosion consisting of youth praise, liturgical dance, and gospel music styles ranging from traditional to Go-Go, all culminating in a good ole fashion Gospel Revival in the evening. The gospel performers such as The Unseen Movement, Resurrection, The Kings of Harmony, and Isaiah Thomas have been invited to perform. Infants and babies will be celebrated all weekend.
KINDRED THE FAMILY SOUL

Birchmere Music Hall, 3701 Mt. Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, VA
Sunday, July 12, 2009, 7:30pm

Husband and wife Fatin Dantzler and Aja Graydon seemingly came out of nowhere in 2003 to release what was likely the most critically acclaimed soul album of that year, Surrender to Love, under their moniker Kindred the Family Soul. Sounding something like an updated Womack and Womack but with the underlying joyousness of Ashford & Simpson, the duo was a breath of fresh air as they sang of their deep love for each other and their family, even while acknowledging the challenging, often monotonous existence of daily life.

Tickets: $35.00 / (703) 549-7500

More info: www.ticketmaster.com…

ANDRE GIST FOUNDATION - ALL-WHITE AFFAIR

Clarion Hotel, 6400 Oxon Hill Road, Oxon Mill, MD
Saturday, July 18, 2009, 8pm

Annual fundraiser for students attending HBCUs. Evening consists of buffet dinner, silent auction, raffle drawings and dancing with music provided by DJ Minter Cooper. Event sponsored by the Andre Gist Memorial Foundation. Established in 2003, the Andre Gist Memorial Foundation is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization dedicated to helping college-bound students meet their expenses for tuition and books. A 1977 graduate of Oxon Hill High School, Andre Gist was a fun-loving and honorable young man, a dedicated student, and a star on the football field. After excelling as an offensive and defensive lineman in high school and at the University of West Virginia, Andre realized a dream: He became a professional football player, joining the Tampa Bay Bandits during the inaugural season of the United States Football League. Less than a year later, in 1983, he died tragically in an auto accident. Yet Andre’s winning spirit lives on through the shared memories of his family and friends, and through this scholarship. Two events, a spring black tie evening of entertainment and dining, and a summer golf tournament, are organized each year to raise funds for the scholarship. All support and contributions are greatly appreciated.

The amount of the scholarship award per student for four years is a total of $8,000. All high school seniors who have been accepted to a Historically Black College and University are eligible to apply. To apply for the Andre Gist Memorial Foundation Scholarship, please contact us at:

Address: Andre Gist Memorial Foundation
P.O.
