DESCRIPTION:Recently\, the rise of deep learning technologies has offere
d the potential for automated misinformation detection and verification.
\;
However\, given the vast amount of data on the internet\,
current technology and computational power often fall short in timely a
nd accurate scrutiny of each piece of information\, making the improveme
nt of processing efficiency an urgent issue to address. \;
Fu
rthermore\, effective fact-checking requires sophisticated reasoning cap
abilities\, while only large language models (LLMs) with considerable si
ze can emerge with advanced reasoning \;abilities. This demand plac
es a higher challenge on computational resources. Moreover\, even if the
se LLM theoretically support advanced fact-checking\, efficiently adapti
ng them for specific fact checking verification tasks remains a technica
l challenge. \;
Accordingly\, the research work in this propo
sal is organized into two parts: \;
In the first part\, we ad
dress the challenge of more effective infodemic surveillance. We innovat
ively study rumor detection and virality prediction within a unified fra
mework\, as these are critical aspects of infodemic surveillance. \;
The second part delves into claim verification solutions that le
verage evidence-based reasoning. Here\, we examine the capabilities of L
LMs to engage in multi-step reasoning. By integrating these models with
gathered evidence\, we showcase their proficiency in accurately verifyin
g claims. \;
In summary\, we systematically study the issue o
f automated misinformation monitoring and verification systems\, and dem
onstrate the effectiveness of the proposed lightweight methods on real-w
orld datasets.
