Denialism: Balancing Skepticism and Science to Shape Global Health and Sustainability Policies. A Conversation with Michael Specter

University of Washington
Kane Hall 110
Tuesday, November 17, 2009, 6:30 – 7:30pm

Where do we draw the line between healthy skepticism and outright denialism? How does denialism affect public discourse on key issues such as global warming, pandemic flu, and HIV/AIDS, and what are the policy implications? What role does denialism play in preventing nations from using in the most effective health care strategies, such as childhood vaccinations? Americans have been taught to be skeptical, but can that questioning be harmful in the scope of global topics such as health care and world hunger?

Michael Specter lives in New York City and writes about science, technology, and global public health for The New Yorker, where he has been a staff writer since 1998. Before arriving at The New Yorker, he worked for the New York Times as the Moscow bureau chief and later as a roving correspondent based in Rome. He also served as the national science reporter for the Washington Post as well as the New York bureau chief. The Global Health Council awarded him two Excellence in Media Awards for his articles on AIDS in India and Russia. He also received the Science Journalism Award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Neighborhood: All of Seattle
More info: www.world-affairs.org…

New Habits of Mind for New Solutions

NWETC Headquarters
650 South Orcas Street, Suite 220
Seattle, WA 98108
Friday, November 20, 2009, 8:30am – 5pm

This 8 hour class is about systems thinking, systems in the natural world, and ways to increase our ability to address complex problems. Our class will give you the competence and confidence to start using systems thinking in your organizations and communities to better understand complex problems – whether you find them in the natural environment or in social systems.

Participants will learn what makes a system a system, and why systems thinking is so useful and so necessary in our world. We’ll share our understanding of the ways and habits of systems thinking, as well as how to apply these habits. We’ll learn about some systems thinking tools, such as causal loops and behavior over time graphs, and how to identify feedback loops. We’ll use the “iceberg model” to deepen our understanding of leverage points for change. At the end, we’ll put it all together – applications and practice.

Learning will occur through hands-on activities such as: small group conversations, large group dialogue, individual reflection, system thinking games, viewing personal stories through a new lens, and the collaborative exploration of complex problems.

Both instructors’ intense interest in the natural world has been enriched through the study and application of systems thinking.

Neighborhood: All of Seattle
More info: http…

Less is More: Simplicity, Happiness, and the Planet in Troubled Time

NWETC Headquarters
650 South Orcas Street, Suite 220
Seattle, WA 98108
Thursday, December 3, 2009, 8:30am – 5pm

People are afraid and anxious. We’re destroying the planet, undermining happiness, and clinging to an unsustainable economy. Our obsessive pursuit of wealth isn’t working.

But there’s another way. Less can be More. Throughout history wise people have argued that we need to live more simply—that only by limiting outer wealth can we have inner wealth.

When we have too much, we savor nothing. When we choose less, we regain our life and can think and feel deeply. Ultimately, a life of less connects us with one true source of happiness: being part of a caring community. This course shows how to turn individual change into a movement that leads to policy changes in government and corporate behavior, work hours, the wealth gap, and sustainability. It will appeal to those who want to take back their lives, their planet, and their well-being.

Register online today.

Neighborhood: All of Seattle
More info: http…
