Arthur M. Sackler Museum, 485 Broadway
Ongoing through Saturday, June 1, 2013

On view through June 1, 2013

This overview of objects drawn from the collections of the Fogg, Busch-Reisinger, and Arthur M. Sackler museums features new acquisitions and rarely displayed works together with well-known objects. In the first-floor gallery, works by European, Latin American, and U.S. artists represent major movements since 1900, and include surrealist and minimalist sculpture; cubist, De Stijl, and abstract expressionist paintings; and conceptual art that incorporates everyday objects and addresses sociopolitical issues. The galleries on the second floor showcase the Sackler Museum’s collections of Asian and Islamic art from 5,000 B.C. to the present. Objects on display include archaic Chinese jades and ritual bronze vessels; Chinese and Korean ceramics; Buddhist sculpture from India, China, and Korea; and examples of Islamic ceramic vessels and tiles, as well as bronzes. The recently reinstalled fourth-floor galleries present a broad chronological survey of works of Western art from antiquity until around 1900, juxtaposed to initiate new dialogues. Rotations of drawings, prints, and photographs throughout the galleries further expand upon these exchanges. A special display features disparate objects made from the same material. Works made of wood will be on display from September 4, 2012 to January 19, 2013, and works made of wax will be shown in spring 2013.

Re-View is on long-term display at the Arthur M. Sackler Museum while the Art Museums’ building at 32 Quincy Street—the former home of the Fogg and Busch-Reisinger museums—is closed for renovation and expansion. The project will unite the three museums in a single, state-of-the-art facility designed by architect Renzo Piano, with completion anticipated in late 2014.

They thrived in lush coal forests 300 million years ago, survived multiple mass extinctions, and today encompass 4,500 species, including some of the most beautiful and colorful insects on the planet. Nurturing parents, these insects often carry and protect their young, and some species even feed them with a kind of “milk” made from their own bodies! Who are they? The answer may surprise you. They’re cockroaches!

You've already heard the negative propaganda. Now come learn the real and amazing truth about these much maligned and misunderstood insects in a new mini-exhibit at the Harvard Museum of Natural History.
The exhibit is the latest installment in the museum's Exploring Diversity series in the exhibition Arthropods: Creatures that Rule.

Organization/Sponsor: Harvard Museum of Natural History
Contact Info: 617.495.3045
More info: www.hmnh.harvard.edu…

A Fair to Remember: Mapping International Expositions

Map Gallery Hall, Pusey Library (access through Lamont Library)
Ongoing through Friday, May 31, 2013, 5pm

Ever since the Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851, millions of people have flocked to world’s fairs and their extravagant displays of invention and artifice. With their eclectic juxtaposition of edifying exhibits, exotic cultural tableaux, and sideshow attractions, these celebrations of human ingenuity have had ramifications far beyond their restricted time and space. They have influenced aesthetic styles and promoted the adoption of new technologies. By reinforcing or challenging popular stereotypes, they have also shaped perceptions of gender, race, and ethnicity. This exhibit explores the cartographic depiction of world’s fairs in London, Paris, Philadelphia, Antwerp, Chicago, Buffalo, St. Louis, San Francisco, New York, and Osaka. The pictorial maps, views, and plans on display are accompanied by related artifacts such as trade cards, postcards, cane maps, photographs, and booklets (including a guide to the contents of a time capsule). Exhibition continues through May 2013.

Organization/Sponsor: Harvard College Library
Cost: Free and open to the public
Contact Info: 617.496.3670
More info: www.hcl.harvard.edu…

Exhibit: Square of Paranoia

Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study
Byerly Gallery, Byerly Hall
8 Garden Street, Cambridge MA
Ongoing through Friday, May 31, 2013, 5pm

This exhibit attempts to make sense of a set of cassettes, negatives, and Super 8 footage that artist David Levine found in late 2010. The known facts are these: the films and recordings were made by Levine’s father, an anthropologist; Levine’s father was implicated in an art-world scandal in 1970; Levine’s parents divorced in 1973; his father died when Levine was 10.

The exhibit’s title is drawn from a hallucination his father experienced on his deathbed. The works on view include prints made from 8mm films and black-and-white negatives, a new video incorporating film and audio recordings, and scattered pieces of evidence.

From May 9 through May 31, the exhibit will be open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Organization/Sponsor: Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study
Cost: Free
More info: www.radcliffe.harvard.edu…
