'Fur Traders in the Pacific Northwest' at the Central Library

Summary: Noted historian Bruce McIntyre Watson shares his research on the diverse group of trappers, traders and suppliers that shaped the Pacific Northwest's lucrative fur trading business in the early 1800s.
Full Description: Watson will speak on the once-vibrant fur trade era that took place west of the Rockies during the first half of the 19th century. This activity and the lives of its resilient participants took place in the contested Pacific Northwest, which at that time ranged from northern British Columbia to southern Oregon. Watson is the author of numerous articles. His most recent book publications are "Leaving Paradise: Indigenous Hawaiians in the Pacific Northwest, 1787-1898," and "Lives Lived West of the Divide: A Biographical Dictionary of Fur Traders Working West of the Rockies, 1793-1858." Watson lives in Vancouver, BC., Presented by PNWHG in partnership with The Seattle Public Library.

Full Description: A former New York Times Beijing bureau chief tells the story of a struggling Chinese basketball team and its quixotic, often comical attempt to make the playoffs by copying the American stars of the NBA and hiring former NBA player and Seattle SuperSonics coach Bob Weiss., The Shanxi Brave Dragons, one of China's worst professional basketball teams, hired Weiss as a coach. The team's owner, Boss Wang, promised that Weiss would be allowed to Americanize his players by teaching them "advanced basketball culture." Desperate for his team to play like Americans, Wang -- a peasant turned steel tycoon -- nevertheless refused to allow his players the freedom and individual expression necessary to truly change their games.

Full Description: Becker and Stein will talk about their research and discoveries about the Fair of the Future in "The Future Remembered: The 1962 Seattle World's Fair and Its Legacy.", The Century 21 Exposition, better known as the Seattle World's Fair, took place in 1962 from April 21 to Oct. 21. As the first major American world's fair after World War II, it presented an optimistic vision of a future improved through science and technology and promoted Seattle to the world as a space-age city. Exhibits focused on industry, commerce, science and the future, but also included fine arts, food and entertainment. Ten million people attended the fair, and it left Seattle with many lasting legacies, including the Space Needle, the Monorail and the Seattle Center.

Summary: Diana James' new book, "Shared Walls," explores the history of early apartment living and apartment buildings in Seattle.
Full Description: Join us on a historic trolley ride with James as our guide. While not literally a ride on the Summit-Bellevue trolley, it becomes historic as she describes what is now Metro bus route #14. "Look" out of the windows to learn about buildings that have been there since at least 1913. James' discussion of the passing scene will particularly point out the apartment houses and the small businesses that served the Summit-Bellevue neighborhood. This is the story of the back and forth -- between work, home and public transportation.

However: doctors Jay and Maureen Neitz, a husband-and-wife team of ophthalmologists at the UW Medicine Eye Institute, believe a cure for color blindness is on its way. 'Remembering Century 21 Workshop: a Community History Project' at the Central Library

Anyone interested in researching Century 21 is welcome to attend.
Full Description: In the spirit of the 50th anniversary of Century 21, MOHAI invites you to explore the memories, memorabilia and myths of Seattle's 1962 World's Fair through a series of free community-wide workshops. Co-hosted by The Seattle Public Library, King County Library System and the Seattle Center Foundation, this series of workshops and seminars will teach you the skills needed to discover, document, and distribute the fascinating histories of one of Seattle’s most influential events through the use of personal experiences and collections., Introductory workshops review the basic history of the Fair, and introduce participants to the historical research skills needed to explore Century 21 memories, souvenirs and legacies. Follow-up seminars will guide you in developing a research project and introduce you to other Century 21 enthusiasts, with the goal of creating a project that can be shared with and celebrated by the community at our closing summit, scheduled for Saturday, September 29, 2012.
