Summary: William H. Wilson presents an illustrated lecture on the life and career of Reginald Heber Thomson, Seattle's City Engineer who led major projects such as street regrades, sewage systems, water supply systems, and electrical power plant.
Full Description: Wilson's new book about Reginald Heber Thomson, "Shaper of Seattle," has just been published by Washington State University Press and is a comprehensive, critical examination that explores key events and forces that shaped the man who shaped Seattle's infrastructure a century ago. The book and lecture covers Thomson's youth, career, personal life, and waning years., A re-dedication of the GAC Rochester commemorative plaque will follow the lecture, with a reception following the program. Rochester was a Library Board Trustee, lawyer and judge during the years Thomson was City Engineer. Books will be available for purchase and signing after the lecture.

Full Description: After finishing years of research on the history of black theater in the U.S., Hill & Barnett have recently published "The Historical Dictionary of African American Theater." The book celebrates nearly 200 years of black theater in the United States, identifying representative African American theater-producing organizations and chronicling their contributions to the field from its birth in 1816 to the present. "The Historical Dictionary of African American Theater" contains a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and over 500 cross-referenced dictionary entries on actors, directors, playwrights, plays, theater-producing organizations, themes, locations, theater movements and awards., Anthony D. Hill is director, administrator, and associate professor of drama at The Ohio State University. Douglas Q. Barnett is a writer, play director, producer, and founder of Black Arts/West in Seattle, Washington.

Full Description: Join us for a special evening with Greg Mortenson, author of the international bestseller, “Three Cups of Tea.” Mortenson will show images and discuss his new book, “Stones into Schools.”, Since the 2006 publication of “Three Cups of Tea,” Mortenson has traveled across the U.S. and the world to share his vision with hundreds of thousands of people. He has met with heads of state, top military officials, and leading politicians who all seek his advice and insight., “Stones into Schools” picks up where “Three Cups of Tea” left off in 2003. Mortenson recounts his relentless, ongoing efforts to establish schools for girls in Afghanistan; his extensive work in Azad Kashmir and Pakistan after a massive earthquake hit the region in 2005; and the unique ways he has built relationships with Islamic clerics, militia commanders, and tribal leaders even as he was dodging shootouts with feuding Afghan warlords and surviving an eight-day armed abduction by the Taliban.
