The Mind's Eye - A Photo Exhibit by Myron McGhee

Cox Hall Computing Center
569 Asbury Circle
Atlanta, GA 30322
Ongoing through Thursday, May 31, 2012

The Mind's Eye is an exhibit of Myron McGhee's photographs of Tibetan monks painting sand mandalas at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

While the monks focus their attention on the artistic elements of creating the sand mandala, they also devote their minds to meditation for the healing of the earth. Observing their sacred practice, our eyes are drawn to the exquisite beauty of their art, and our minds are inspired by their religious devotion.

This collection of photographs will be on exhibit at various venues on Emory's campus throughout the 2011-2012 academic year.
Contemporary Mandala: New Audiences, New Forms

Visual Arts Gallery
700 Pevine Creek Drive
Atlanta, GA 30322
Ongoing through Sunday, April 15, 2012

Contemporary Mandala:
New Audiences, New Forms
January 21–April 15, 2012

Emory Visual Arts Gallery

Planned in consultation with Jacquelynn Baas, author of Smile of the Buddha: Eastern Philosophy and Western Art from Monet to Today, this exhibit brings together contemporary artists who explore the mandala form as artistic expression and as a tool for transformation and balance in our complex world. This exploration takes many forms, from redrafting traditional visual depictions to the use of new materials, to the performance body participating in the mandala form.

A mandala by New York artist and Morehouse College alumnus Sanford Biggers forms the centerpiece of the gallery, providing a dynamic space for music and dance. Surrounding this performance space are the works of artists Don Cooper, Faith McClure, Christopher McNulty, Andra Samelson, King Thackston, and Marcia Vaitsman. From transcendent abstracts to repetitive patterns, the multi-media works by these artists use the mandala and its residual power to address today’s physical, cultural, environmental, and cosmological issues.

Emory Event Topic: Arts
Department/Organization: Visual Arts Program
Type of Art: Visual Arts & Art History - Exhibitions, Lectures, & Events
Series: Contemporary Mandala
Event Open To: All
Cost: Free
Contact Email: visualarts@emory.edu
More info: visualarts.emory.edu

Concourse Gallery, Woodruff Library Level 2
Ongoing through Thursday, March 8, 2012

An exhibition that provides a glimpse into the range of ways love is expressed and recorded throughout the collections at Emory’s Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library (MARBL). In this selection of letters, telegrams, book inscriptions, poems, and photographs, we see everything from the passionate outpourings of Emory students to the vibrant expression of Alice Notley, the pragmatic perspective of Maud Gonne to the wild sentimentality of W.B Yeats.
Scholar’s Seminar on Modernism

Reception Hall, Michael C. Carlos Museum
571 South Kilgo Circle
Atlanta, GA 30322
Sunday, February 12, 2012, 9am – 4pm

What was Modernism? Was it a style, an ideal, a politics, a form of life or none of these things? And what about its central concepts like authorship, realism, truth, teleology, medium specificity, and expression? With the growing sense that Postmodernism is in decline, we might begin to get a clearer sense of what Modernism was and what its aims were. This symposium asks whether Modernism is dead for good (and for the best), or whether its death was announced prematurely.

Discussion format: Nell Andrew (UGA), Todd Cronan (Emory), Lisa Florman (Ohio State), Elizabeth Goodstein (Emory), Sarah Hamill (Oberlin), Gordon Hughes (Rice), Dalia Judowitz (Emory), Andrew Mitchell (Emory), Charles Palermo (William and Mary), Michael Schreyach (Trinity), and others.

Seminar discussion will revolve around pre-circulated papers. If you would like to take part in the seminar discussion, please contact Todd Cronan in advance of the event at todd.cronan@emory.edu

Held in conjunction with "Embodied Seeing: Modernist Works on Paper, 1890-1962" at the Michael C. Carlos Museum. On View in the John Howett Works on Paper Gallery from Feb. 4 - May 20, 2012.

It is the special character of works on paper that they are scaled to the human body. Whether it is a woodcut, lithograph, drawing, or a printed book, these media address the body in a different way from painting, sculpture, or cinema. The eleven books and works of art exhibited in Embodied Seeing: Modernist Works on Paper, 1890-1962 carry a sense of intimacy that is related to the touch of the hand and to the seated body. Works like Vasily Kandinsky’s woodcut Schwarzer Fleck or Henri Matisse’s illustrated collection, Poèmes de Charles d’Orléans, are not meant to be viewed or read in traditional ways. They solicit many of the feelings associated with the intimacy of reading, but at the same time frustrate any effort to approach them as texts to be read or stories to be told. Rather, we look at these works, we see them, and we respond to them as visual phenomena of a highly sophisticated order. All of the books and works of art in this exhibition are from the permanent collection of Works on Paper at the Michael C. Carlos Museum and Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Books Library of Emory University.

Emory Event Topic: Arts, College
Department/Organization: Art History, Carlos Museum
Type of Art: Visual Arts & Art History - Exhibitions, Lectures, & Events
Event Open To: All
Building/Room: Carlos Reception Hall
Cost: Free
Contact Name: Todd Cronan
Contact Phone: 404-727-0513
Contact Email: todd.cronan@emory.edu
More info: arts.emory.edu

Lecture: The Dark Side: A History of Violence in Tibetan Buddhism

Carlos Museum, Reception Hall
Wednesday, February 15, 2012, 7:30 – 8:30pm

Jacob Dalton, Assistant Professor of South Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley discusses wrathful deities in Tibetan Buddhism in a lecture titled The Dark Side: A History of Violence in Tibetan Buddhism.
From images of peaceful monks meditating on mountainsides, to the Dalai Lama teaching compassion toward Tibet's Chinese oppressors, Tibetan Buddhism is widely portrayed as a religion of non-violence. Yet a closer look at the art of Tibet reveals quite another image. Witness the demonic beings dancing upon corpses, the skulls filled with blood, the fearsome weapons; this is a far more complex and ambivalent tradition than many imagine, one that at once condemns and embraces violence. In this talk, Dalton traces the history of Tibet's ambivalent relationship to violence. By focusing on three vignettes, drawn from Tibetan myth, history, and geography, he explores the disconcerting similarities between evil demons and the wrathful buddhas that tame them, great Buddhist masters' expressions of anxiety over their involvements in violent ritual practice, and the strangely divided relationship Tibetans have with their border regions.

Emory Event Topic: Arts

Written by Clifford Odets and Ernest Lehman; music by Elmer Bernstein and the Chico Hamilton Quartet; starring Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis. Cinematography by James Wong Howe.

"Sweet Smell of Success" was dubbed by one period reviewer “one of the most cynical movies ever made.” The steely stillness of Burt Lancaster’s performance as the Walter Winchell-based columnist J.J. Hunsecker may have justly earned him a place in AFI’s top 50 movie villains but Tony Curtis’ endlessly ingratiating and deliciously craven press agent Sidney Falco is the heart of this black-hearted movie: That is, if you don’t count Howe’s rendering of New York City itself.
Carlos Reads Book Club reads The Ramayana

Carlos Museum, Board Room
Tuesday, February 21, 2012, 7:30 – 9pm

Emory scholars Joyce Flueckiger and Narayan Rao lead readers through The Ramayana.
One of India's two major pan-Indian epics, the Ramayana has had a long and sustained history in the development of civilizational values in South Asia. The Ramayana has multiple regional language versions, both literary and oral, in addition to a number of literary forms in Sanskrit itself. It's popularity and influence cannot be over estimated. Its characters are larger than life, occupy an imagined timeless past, and at the same time, they are household names, as familiar as next door neighbors speaking to the present. Episodes from the Ramayana are represented in every conceivable medium: poetry, drama, dance, song, sculpture, painting and film. Since the text of the full Ramayana is too long for our book group, Drs. Joyce Flueckiger and Narayan Rao will lead readers through a retelling of the epic, particular episodes from various regional language version, and an examination of visual representations of these episodes. Registration is required by calling 404.727.6118. Fee: $35 for Carlos members; $50 for non-members and includes the cost of the book.

Emory Event Topic: Arts

Preserved by the Library of Congress.

The first of five films to team Mann and Alton, this low budget, “case-file” crime drama became a major hit for the young Eagle-Lion studio. Though initially received as a new high in location-based realism, today Alton’s low-key lighting effects virtually define film noir visuals at their most stylized, expressionistic extreme.

Emory Event Topic: Arts
Department/Organization: Film Studies
Director: Anthony Mann
Type of Art: Film - Screenings, Lectures, & Events
Series: Emory Cinematheque
Speaker/Presenter: Curated by Dr. Karla Oeler
Event Open To: All
Cost: Free
Contact Phone: 404-727-6761

Lecture: Dancing at the Solstice: The Maidens on the Acanthus Column at Delphi.

Carlos Museum, Reception Hall
Thursday, February 23, 2012, 7:30 – 8:30pm

Gloria Ferrari Pinney, Professor Emeritus of Classical Archaeology and Art at Harvard University delivers the annual Phi Beta Kappa Lecture, Dancing at the Solstice: The Maidens on the Acanthus Column at Delphi.

In the 330s BCE the Athenians dedicated to Pythian Apollo at Delphi an extraordinary monument: a gigantic column wrapped in acanthus leaves, on top of which are three dancing maidens who hold aloft over their heads a large bronze tripod. Why this and why now? The years are a particularly dramatic period in Athenian history, one that opens in 338 with the crushing defeat of the Athenian and Boeotian forces at Chaeronea and the prospect of a Macedonian invasion. Nearly 120 years since its discovery, the meaning of the Column and the occasion for its dedication remain hotly debated topics. This lecture traces the disparate elements of this assemblage to parallels in visual and poetic imagery and identifies in it a representation of a cosmic landmark that is relevant to both Helios Apollo and to its Athenian sponsors.
This program is co-sponsored by the Program in Mediterranean Archaeology, Ancient Mediterranean Studies, and the Department of Classics, and the Carlos Museum.

Emory Event Topic: Arts

Creating an abstract narrative around the loss of communication, he investigates the effects of the abrupt discontinuation of Pittsburgh radio station WAMO on a community, and the lingering effects of Alzheimer's and aphasia on a family. Abraham mixes recordings of classic soul and hip hop with contemporary classical compositions to create an eclectic score that evokes fond memories and a passion for what is lost.

Performances:
Thurs., Feb. 23, 8 p.m.
Fri., Feb. 24, 8 p.m.
Sat., Feb. 25, 8 p.m.

Purchase tickets online or call 404-727-5050

Emory Event Topic: Arts
Department/Organization: Emory Dance Program
Artist: Kyle Abraham/Abraham In Motion
Type of Art: Arts - Flora Glenn Candler Concert Series
Series: Flora Glenn Candler Concert Series
Event Open To: All
Venue: Dance Studio
Building/Room: Donna & Marvin Schwartz Center for Performing Arts
Cost: $20 public; $15 discount groups; $10 students
Contact Name: Arts at Emory Box Office
Contact Phone: 404-727-7266
Contact Email: boxoffice@emory.edu
More info: www.arts.emory.edu

Carlos Museum, Reception Hall
Sunday, February 26, 2012, 12 – 5pm

Kimberly Carmody from Urban River Arts in New York and museum volunteers will be on hand to help participants of all ages create a giant mandala from natural and recyclable materials. Visitors will help create the mandala design by using a large-scale compass, a string, and a piece of chalk. Then visitors will create the colors and textures of the mandala by filling the sections with found and re-purposed materials. Once it is finished, participants will participate in a dismantling ceremony where they may take and reuse and recycle the materials. This is a drop-in event. Visitors may come for any length of time between noon and 5 pm.

This event is co-sponsored by the Emory Office of Sustainability Initiatives.

Emory Event Topic: Arts

Carlos Reads Book Club reads The Ramayana

Carlos Museum, Board Room
Tuesday, February 28, 2012, 7:30 – 9pm

The Modern Mandala: A Lecture by Jacquelynn Baas

Carlos Museum Reception Hall
Thursday, March 1, 2012, 7:30pm

Jacquelynn Baas will provide context for the contemporary mandala by focusing on the work of Marcel Duchamp. She will also talk about works in the current exhibition at the Visual Arts Gallery, Contemporary Mandala: New Audiences, New Forms, as well as other examples of the contemporary mandala.

Jacquelynn Baas was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan and attended Michigan State University (BA Art History 1971) and the University of Michigan (MA Art History 1973, PhD 1982). Her museum career was spent at university art museums: the University of Michigan Museum of Art (Registrar, Assistant to the Director, Editor, Bulletin of the Museums of Art and Archaeology, 1974-82), the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College (Chief Curator, Director, 1982-88), and the University of California Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (Director, 1989-99, Emeritus Director 1999- ). She left the museum field in 1999 to devote herself to writing, although she still consults and serves as guest curator for museum exhibitions. Baas was co-founder and director of the arts consortium Awake: Art, Buddhism, and the Dimensions of Consciousness (1999-2004), and is curator of the exhibition "Fluxus and the Essential Questions of Life," currently traveling from The Hood Museum, Dartmouth College (through August 8, 2011), to the Grey Art Gallery, NYU (Fall 2011), to the University of Michigan Museum of Art (February - May, 2012). She continues to research, write, and lecture about the many ways artists working in the U.S. and Europe use Asian philosophy as a resource, as well as other topics including the Mexican muralists, Fluxus, and contemporary art and artists. She is co-editor of Buddha Mind in Contemporary Art, which documents the growing presence of Buddhist perspectives in contemporary culture. She lives and works at The Sea Ranch, California.

Emory Event Topic: Arts, College
Department/Organization: Visual Arts Program
Type of Art: Visual Arts & Art History - Exhibitions, Lectures, & Events
Series: Contemporary Mandala: New Audiences, New Forms
Speaker/Presenter: Jacquelynn Baas
Event Open To: All
Building/Room: Carlos Reception Hall
Cost: FREE
Contact Name: Mary Catherine Johnson
Contact Email: mcjohn7@emory.edu
More info: www.visualarts.emory.edu

Theater and Dance faculty come together for the first time to collaborate and intertwine movement and text around the theme of water. Fueled by storytelling, these creators delve into image-based moments that are personal and extraordinary to convey the impact of various states of water.

"Vessel" is a performance ritual capturing the issues surrounding women who collect and manage water resources in underdeveloped countries.
Carlos Reads Book Club reads The Ramayana

Carlos Museum, Board Room
Tuesday, March 6, 2012, 7:30 – 9pm

Print courtesy of UCLA Film and Television Archives.

This Tennessee Williams-scripted, Elia Kazan-directed black comedy-drama sensation (Variety wanted to know how it got past the Code) made overnight film stars out of Baker and Wallach in their first starring roles as a teenage Mississippi Delta bride still sleeping in a crib and her would-be seducer. Williams, Baker and supporting actress Mildred Dunnock all earned Academy Award nominations, as did Boris Kaufman’s cinematography.

Emory Event Topic: Arts
Department/Organization: Film Studies
Director: Elia Kazan
Type of Art: Film - Screenings, Lectures, & Events
Series: Emory Cinematheque
Speaker/Presenter: Curated by Dr. Karla Oeler
Event Open To: All
Cost: Free
Contact Phone: 404-727-6761
