Description | The Festival of (In)appropriation is a yearly showcase of contemporary, short, audiovisual works that take existing film, video, or other media and repurpose it in “inappropriate” and inventive ways. This year’s program features a variety of moving-image appropriation art, including a riotous YouTube reaction video mash-up, an exquisite found-footage ready-made, a queer Asian-American homage to Hollis Frampton, and a pseudo-documentary (or is it?) about an early Soviet explorer of “mental projection.” In this talk co-curator Lauren Berliner will introduce some of this year’s most remarkable films and discuss the opportunities and challenges of curating at a time when appropriation has become a key to both making and understanding popular media. Lauren Berliner is Assistant Professor of Media & Communication and Cultural Studies at the University of Washington Bothell. Her research focuses on participatory media production, gender and sexuality, and pedagogy. Also a filmmaker, she has screened her work internationally and facilitated video production and programming for girls and queer youth. |
