Search: Communication and Media Production Candidate: Justin de Leon Bio: (https://justindeleon9.wordpress.com/) Justin De Leon received a BA in Political Science from Allegheny College in 2003, an MA in International Studies from the University of Central Florida in 2008, and an MA (2012) and Ph.D. (2016) in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Delaware. He also has certificates in Women and Gender Studies, Documentary Film Making, and Mediation and Peace and Conflict Resolution. De Leon is currently a full-time lecturer in the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of California, San Diego, where he teaches courses in Indigenous Studies, Latina/o Sexualities, the US-Mexican Border, and Film for Social Transformation. Prior to this, he has taught as an instructor of record and teaching assistant and the University of Delaware. De Leon is a documentary film-maker who takes up indigenous approaches to mediation in his scholarly and documentary work. His research seeks to interrupt dominant conceptions of security by taking indigenous feminist worldviews seriously as a source of analysis. His dissertation, Lakota Experiences of Security: Self and the Social, forthcoming article “Conversations: Storytelling, Lakota, and Decolonial Interventions” (International Feminist Journal of Politics), and two book chapters under review address how Lakota cultural and traditional practices act as a means to transform and navigate the settler colonial order. De Leon also has experience in film making and documentary production, and currently serves as the Media Director for the North American Indigenous Oral History Project with the nonprofit Documentation Center for Indigenous Peoples (DoCIP). |
