Search: Communication and Media Production Candidate: Erin Cory Bio: Erin Cory received a dual BA (in English and Spanish) from Indiana University in 2003, an MA in English literature from Boston College in 2007, and a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of California-San Diego in 2015. She is currently Postdoctoral Researcher in Refugee Studies and Media Studies at Mälmo University, Sweden. Prior to this, she has taught extensively, as External Lecturer at the Institut for Historie, Syddansk Universitet in Denmark, and as instructor of record and Teaching Assistant at UCSD. She won the Donald T. White Teaching Excellence Award in 2007 at Boston College, and a Teaching Assistant Excellence Award at UCSD in 2009. Courses she has developed/taught include Making Use of Media (MA level course) and courses on American Studies (including popular culture, and oral and written communication). Cory’s research focuses on how community myths and stories crystallize into identities, with a particular interest in the way such identity-formation works in the context of national identity and borders. Her dissertation, Re-membering Beirut: Performing Memory and Community Across a “Postwar” City, her forthcoming book chapter, “Badna Naaref (We Want to Know): Unearthing the Public Secret of Lebanon’s Missing and Disappeared,” and her current research on refugee youth in Scandinavia all bridge media studies and urban studies to complicate stories told about marginalized communities, and explore how both realms may provide avenues for creative resistance. Her scholarship includes creative production – she is currently working on a film in collaboration with refugees in Copenhagen and Malmo. |
