Search: Communication and Media Production Candidate: Amanda Weiss Bio: Amanda Weiss received a BA from the School of Cinema-Television and the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, University of Southern California, in 2006, an M.Phil. from the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Cambridge, in 2008, and a Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies, University of Tokyo, in 2015. She is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Bill and Carol Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry at Emory University, where she is teaching The Pacific War Onscreen. Prior to that, she was Visiting Assistant Professor at the College of Intercultural Communication, Rikkyo University, and has taught courses at Temple University Japan and Meiji Gakuin University. Her teaching experience ranges from courses on Gender and Orientalism in Western Media, Golden Era Cinema, Japanology, and Multi-Media Communication and Research, to Media Project courses, to courses in Academic Writing, Debate, Listening, EFL, and Conversational Mandarin. With language skills in Chinese Japanese and French as well as English, Weiss’s research examines memory and popular culture in East Asia. Her dissertation, Producing the Nation: Memory, Race and Gender in Chinese and Japanese War Films, and her published articles “New Masculinities in Chinese and Japanese Films” (Asian Cinema, December 2014) and “Contested Images of Rape: The Nanjing Massacre in Chinese and Japanese Films” (Signs, January 2016), uses a gendered frame to show how popular war remembrance reveals transformations of identity and power in the Pacific. Weiss also has experience with integrating media production into her courses. |
