Tang’s research takes a political economy approach to media industries. Her work takes place at both individual and structural scales. Her MA thesis work explored the identity struggles of Chinese journalists caught in the transition between the party-state media systems and neoliberal/commercial reforms. Her current work explores how information communication technology (ICT) industries are emerging as sites of capitalist reproduction, with a particular focus on China’s Internet Industry. Her dissertation, Tencent as a Nexus: The Political Economy of China’s Internet Industry 1998-2016, examines issues of ownership and control, business and organizational strategy, and relations between capital and state power through a study of the internet company Tencent. Future projects seek to extend her research to ICT industries in other BRIC nations. Apart from her scholarly work, Tang brings both her own background as a journalist in China, and her expertise in new media/internet industries, to integrate media production in her classrooms. |
