Search: Communication and Media Production Candidate: Masahiro Sugano Bio: http://studio-revolt.com/ Masahiro Sugano received a BA in Philosophy from California State University, Northridge in 1995 and an MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2000. An award-winning film-maker, Sugano brings a range of teaching experiences, from intensive teaching of film making and animation to inner city high school students in Chicago, to teaching courses on media production and communication theory as an adjunct professor at Loyola University, DePaul University, and Columbia College. In addition, he has given numerous guest lectures on Asian film and workshops on film production. Sugano’s work spans documentary (Verses in Exile, Cambodian Son), spoken word video (Why I Write, Unite Us [now part of the permanent collection at the Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan], Hadeel, Tell Them, Neon Poems), short fiction (Instant Slapping, Neang Neak, Yarning for Love, Maria’s List, Super Kamada), feature fiction (Second Moon) and photography (The Buddhist Bug, Red Chador). He describes his work as having two thrusts: One with a social justice and community orientation which is collaborative, as in his work with Anida Yoeu Ali (Buddhist Bug, Red Chador) and poets and spoken word artists (Khmer poet Kosal Khiev, Palestinian poet Rafeel Ziadah, Marshall Islander poet Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner). Another is work that is more introspective and whimsical, such as his short fiction. His work has gained critical acclaim (Best Documentary Asian American Journalist Association; Sovereign Asian Art Prize, Best Film Jogja Netpac Asian Film Festival, Best Documentary Center for Asian American Media, Best Performance Zebra Poetry Film Festival Berlin), and has been screened at film festivals nationally and internationally (Shanghai International Film Festival, DMZ Documentary Film Festival, San Francisco CAAM Fest, Lebanon International Film Festival, DisOrient Asian American Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival) as well as exhibited at art exhibitions (Kaunas Art Festival, Asian Pacific Triennel, Asian Art Bienniel, Asia Now Paris, Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale). |
