Please join us for sigh & sound, an interdisciplinary symposium with talks by Fiona Annis and Eldritch Priest. FIONA ANNIS: A portion of that which was once everything This talk explores photography’s uncanny relationship with the past and the strange ways that the past inhabits the present. With past and current projects as points of reference, the talk meditates on the prefix 're' for the ways it can leverage materials, images, and technologies in search of new meanings: return, revenant, remediate, and reinvent all reoccur in the writings that describe Annis’s projects. BIO: Fiona Annis lives and works in Montreal, Canada. She has presented exhibitions nationally and internationally at artist-run centers, galleries and museums including: The AC Institute (New York City), The Canadian Centre for Architecture (Montréal) Goldsmith's University (London), LowSalt Gallery (Glasgow), Gallery44 (Toronto), VU Photo (Québec City) and The Art Gallery of Alberta (Edmonton). ELDRITCH PRIEST: Impractical enthusiasms What is it to think when thought is freed from all ends, practical, fanciful or otherwise? Where would thought go were it liberated from the demands of meaning? What would it do? What would it feel like? This presentation engages thought’s matter of style by taking on the adventures (or non-adventures) of earworms, cockroaches, mimes, and logic as ways in which thinking comes to drift, divagate, and maybe even dawdle. BIO: Eldritch Priest is Assistant Professor in the School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University. He is the author of Boring Formless Nonsense: Experimental Music and the Aesthetics of Failure (Bloomsbury, 2013) and co-author of Ludic Dreaming: How to Listen Away from Contemporary Technoculture (Bloomsbury, 2017). He is also active as a musical composer and improviser. |
