The Office of Alumni Engagement invites you to join Professor Cherry A. McGee Banks for UW Bothell’s third Encore! Lecture on Thursday, January 11th. Professor Banks’ presentation will focus on her work with teachers and the processes they use to understand the ways in which diversity influences classroom behaviors and interactions. She will discuss the importance of creating an identity-safe classroom environment where teachers can engage in a form of retrospective inquiry in which they compare and contrast their lives with individuals who are members of a different gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, race or social class. The goal is to help teachers increase their self-awareness and recognize how their values, beliefs, and positionality, which are often invisible, influence their interactions with their students as well as their expectations for themselves. Join us in celebrating Professor McGee Banks' accomplishments as a nationally recognized scholar who's passion for teaching laid the groundwork in building UW Bothell's innovative teacher training methods. A short reception with light refreshments will follow. |
