 aimed author and historian Jack Nisbet turns his attention to the 19th c
 entury Scottish explorer and naturalist David Douglas in his new book\, 
 "The Collector: David Douglas and the Natural History of the Northwest."
  Douglas led a fascinating life that took him everywhere from New York t
 o Hawaii\, but he is best known for his groundbreaking observations of t
 he Pacific Northwest. His discoveries include hundreds of western plants
  — most notably the Douglas Fir. Douglas’ detailed field notebooks and l
 ively narrative sketches\, along with extensive flora and fauna collecti
 ons\, provide baseline information about Pacific Northwest landscape and
  culture during the period of initial European contact. Nisbet weaves an
  evocative narrative that infuses excerpts from Douglas’ journals with d
 escriptive historical information\, inviting readers to travel alongside
