In fall 2013, Candler School of Theology will undergo its regularly scheduled 10-year accreditation review by the Commission on Accrediting of the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada (ATS). As part of this process, Candler invites all its various constituencies – including students, alumni, friends, donors, and clergy and lay members of The United Methodist Church – to provide comment in writing regarding Candler’s qualifications for accreditation. All comments received will be made available to the commission’s evaluation committee during their visit to campus on November 11-14, 2013.

Christians pass through the waters of baptism once, but we live our lives immersed in the waters of popular culture. Never are those currents as strong as in adolescence, a critical time for faith formation. How does youth ministry fight them – or swim with them – without getting dragged out to sea? YTI has been wrestling with these questions for 20 years; come see what we’ve learned.

“Entering the Waters” begins with “Religion and Culture Remix,” a quick-hitting series of “TED-talk” presentations from scholars and ministers wrestling with how to turn hip hop, teen fiction (like Twilight), and other aspects of youth culture into tools for ministry. It is designed for pastors, youth workers, theologians, educators, and those interested in the intersection of religion and contemporary culture.

Lunch will feature a talk on the present and future of youth ministry.

Save the date for "Learning to Walk in the Dark," a public lecture by Barbara Brown Taylor, who will be Candler's Alonzo L. McDonald Family Chair on the Life and Teachings of Jesus and their Impact on Culture in 2013. Admission is free, but registration is required. Registration will open on July 1, 2013.

While human fear of the dark is so well-established that "darkness" has become a synonym for everywhere we don't want to go, we are called to keep moving even when we cannot see the way ahead. In spite of everything we've been taught, learning to walk in the dark puts us on the sacred way of unknowing, where there are fewer obstacles to encountering the God we did not make up. This path opens the possibility that walking in the dark nourishes the soul as surely as walking by the light of day.

Barbara Brown Taylor is the Butman Professor of Religion at Piedmont College in rural northeast Georgia. An Episcopal priest since 1984, she is the author of twelve books, including the New York Times bestseller An Altar in the World. Her first memoir, Leaving Church, met with widespread critical acclaim, winning a 2006 Author of the Year award from the Georgia Writers Association.
