"Adventures Into Color and Space: Mixed Media Works by Deborah Forman" Exhibition

Cape Cod Museum of Art
60 Hope Lane
Dennis, MA 02638
Thursday, March 21 – Sunday, May 19, 2013

Deborah Forman’s mixed-media works are vibrant explorations into color and form. The artist — the former editor in chief of Cape Cod VIEW magazine and features editor of the Cape Cod Times — has been influenced by the works of Matisse, Picasso, Braque, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella and Kurt Schwitters. An exhibition on Cubism sparked her desire to work in collage and mixed media. The found objects she adds to her work —scraps from printed media, theater tickets, labels, old maps, textured papers, even words, and anything else that strikes her fancy —help create a diversity of moods and meanings. She feels her many interviews with painters, sculptors and photographers have enriched her work as an artist. An opening reception for "Adventures Into Color and Space" will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 5.

Region: Mid Cape
Town: Dennis
Category: Arts/Entertainment
Cost: Admission is $9, $8 for seniors, $5 for students 13 to 18, and free for children 12 and under.
Phone: 508-385-4477
Directions: The museum is located off Route 6A on the grounds of the Cape Cod Center for the Arts (next to Cape Cinema).
Venue website: www.ccmoa.org

Driving Our Dreams: Imagination in Motion

Heritage Museums & Gardens, 67 Grove St., Sandwich
Sunday, May 19, 2013

On April 13, Heritage Museums & Gardens opens for the season with its 2013 Special Exhibit “Driving Our Dreams: Imagination in Motion.” The exhibit, which is sponsored in part by Arbella Insurance Foundation, David and Melissa McGraw and Bonhams International Auctioneers, will pay homage to the great car concepts and designers who pushed the boundaries of automobile design and technology. It features sixteen of the most exceptional and historically-significant concept cars from across the nation. This is the first time this collection of unique cars, which hail from the country’s top automobile museums and private collections, has been displayed together. “Driving Our Dreams” will emphasize the design process behind great concepts of the past, like the Firebird II, and the cars of tomorrow, like the Terrafugia flying car. The exhibit provides an interactive exhibition for all ages and all interests, and will provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the glamorous and innovative world of automotive design.

Many of the featured concept cars were showcased at GM’s Motorama extravaganzas during the 1950s. Unlike prototypes, concept or “dream cars” were meant to test the limits of technology and design, and to build excitement among consumers. Most never made it to production, largely because they would have been too expensive to mass-produce. From the 1956 Firebird II to the Infinium solar-powered car, these cars exemplify the far-reaching boundaries of automobile designers’ imaginations. Car enthusiasts will especially delight in the 1963 personal Corvette of GM’s Harley Earl, who is regarded as one of the pioneers in automobile design and the father of the Corvette.

The exhibit will also spotlight fashion with a look at how car design has reflected on pop culture and fashion over the decades. Giant images featuring such icons as Sophia Loren, Mick Jagger, and Steve McQueen will add to the exhibit. Designer tools and interactive stations where visitors can create design mood boards and style and post solar car drawings will also engage visitors in the design process.

In addition to the cars displayed in the Automobile Gallery, the exhibit will extend into Heritage’s Special Exhibitions Gallery, where it will explore what today’s designers are dreaming up for future automotive designs via a multi-media experience. The Arbella Insurance Foundation Family Discovery Room will encourage children and adults to design their own concept cars, build miniature vehicles using an assortment of wooden parts, and test them for speed on a giant ramp. Plus, the gallery walls will be covered with blackboard paint, encouraging visitors to share their thoughts and ideas related to automobiles and transportation.

Also in the Special Exhibitions Gallery will be a massive model of a megacity, “Paper Metropolis,” created by international artist and thought leader Kiel Johnson. Johnson has been conducting workshops around the world, leading community builds of his intricate cardboard city creations, and getting multi-generations to think about the future of city planning. He will lead a five-day community build with students, artists, members, community organizations and visitors at Heritage and the resulting art piece will remain part of the exhibit.

“This is one of the most remarkable exhibitions we’ve had the pleasure of showcasing,” said Ellen Spear, President & CEO of Heritage Museums & Gardens. “The intersection of fashion, design, style and technology is reflected in these rare and inspiring concepts- many of the ideas of 50 years ago are just being incorporated into cars today.”

To complement the exhibit, several prominent leaders in the auto industry will visit Heritage to participate in a lecture series throughout the exhibit. Lecturers include documentary producer Bill Stephens; TV personality and auto expert Wayne Carini; noted restoration expert Kevin MacKay; Dr. Carl Dietrich, aerospace engineer and CEO/CTO and co-founder of Terrafugia; Bill Porter, former General Motors designer and authority on twentieth century automobile design trends; and Dr. Michael Knodler, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. A complete schedule can be viewed at www.heritagemuseumsandgardens.org.

“Driving Our Dreams” Imagination in Motion” opens on April 13 and closes on October 27, 2013. It’s included with admission. This exhibit is made possible by Arbella Insurance Foundation, David & Melissa McGraw, Bonhams International Auctioneers, Cape Air/Nantucket Airlines and Reliable Carriers.

Automobiles to be featured in Exhibit include:
• 1927 LaSalle
• 1953 Buick Wildcat II
• 1953 Lincoln X100
• 1954 Hudson Italia
• 1954 Plymouth Explorer
• 1956 Firebird II
• 1956 Buick Centurion
• 1962 Corvette
• 1963 Harley Earl Corvette
• 1963 Chevrolet Corvair Monza SS
• 1973 Chevrolet XP898
• 1974 Chevrolet Corvette – Reynolds
• 1986 Chevrolet Corvette Indy
• 1990 Corvette CERV III
• 2009 Terrafugia Transition Roadable Aircraft
• 2009 Infinium Solar Car
Free with admission. 508-888-3300.

Region: Upper Cape
Town: Sandwich
Category: Arts/Entertainment

Art Exhibit: Origins: The Stories Behind Art

Cape Cod Chat House
593 Route 6A
Dennis 02638
Sunday, May 19, 2013, 10am – 9pm

Thru June 15. Work by Sophia Chatov, John Cira, Leslie Kramer, Jennifer R. Morgan, Richard Neal, Jackie Reeves, Sara David Ringler, and James Wolf

Every piece of art has a story behind it. It may be about an inspiration or idea that moved the artist, the materials used, or layers of meaning that developed as it was being created. But that "original story" is just the beginning—the starting point of an unfolding narrative. Over time, each work of art develops its own "life story," co-authored by buyers, collectors, galleries, museums, and heirs. This exhibit features work by eight artists who share the origins behind specific works. Will one of these pieces become part of your life story? Open Wed. thru Sat. 10 am to 9 pm

Region: Mid Cape
Town: Dennis
Category: Arts/Entertainment
Cost: FREE
Phone: 508 694-7187
Email: info@capecodchathouse.com
Venue website: www.capecodchathouse.com
More info: www.capecodchathouse.com

The Art of Catboat

Cape Cod Maritime Museum
135 South St., Hyannis, located on the corner of South Street and Ocean Street to the left of Aselton Park.
Sunday, May 19, 2013, 10am – 4pm

For Immediate Release: 1/16/2013
Contact: Joanne Harrington
508-775-1723 ext.3
jharrington@capecodmaritimemuseum.org

Brief:
New Exhibit
The Art of the Catboat
A diverse medium expression of the elegant Catboat design.
The Catboat, an elegant display of craftsmanship and beauty, exemplifies the spirit of the American boat design. Joseph Keveney caught this spirit when he built three Catboat models from 1936-1942. Fortunately, his family has generously loaned his boat models to the Cape Cod Maritime Museum, thus becoming the catalyst for our new rotating exhibit, “The Art of the Catboat.” We invited Cape Cod artists to share a variety of unique perspectives, inspired by the Catboat, to display their artwork at the museum’s newest exhibit, scheduled to open for a “sneak peak” during the school vacation week of February 18th-22nd. The full exhibit opens during Cape Cod Maritime Museum’s 2013 season opening on March 12th and runs through July 6th. The next rotating exhibit, “Risky Business: Rum-Running on Cape Cod,” runs from July 10th through December 15th.

Full Release: Cape Cod Maritime Museum is proud to present a new exhibit in our rotating gallery entitled, “The Art of the Catboat,” a diverse medium expression of the elegant Catboat design. A beautiful display of American craftsmanship, the Catboat was the inspiration Boat builder Joseph Keveney drew upon when designing three of his models, built from 1936-1942 and recently on loan to the Cape Cod Maritime Museum. In an effort to honor the heritage of this magnificent and popular boat design CCMM has invited other Catboat enthusiasts of various artistic mediums to display their creations alongside Joseph Keveney’s three large Catboat models. The new exhibit includes half hull models, oil paintings, photography, sculpture, stain glass/mixed media, a sailors’ valentine and unique and creative art works which are sure to communicate the inspiration inherent in the great design of the Catboat. The exhibit debuts for a “Sneak Peak” on Monday, February 18th through Friday, February 22nd, and opens again with our season on March 12th in our West Wing Rotating Gallery until July 6th. The next rotating exhibit, “Risky Business: Rum-Running on Cape Cod,” runs from July 10th through December 15th.

ABOUT CCMM
On a unique and compelling site on Hyannis Harbor, the Cape Cod Maritime Museum serves as a focal point for the Cape and Island's maritime tradition. The three books were ‘The Insect God’, ‘The West Wing’, and ‘The Gashlycrumb Tinies’.
Cape Rep Theatre presents Anna Christie

Cape Rep Indoor Theatre
3299 Rte 6A
Brewster, MA 02631
Sunday, May 19, 2013, 2pm

Anna Christie

By Eugene O’Neill; Directed by Maura Hanlon

Winner of the 1922 Pulitzer Prize, O'Neill's classic is a surprisingly contemporary play that crackles with fierce physicality, humor and drama. The play's trio of iconic characters--Anna, her seafaring father, and the shipwrecked sailor she loves--are an explosive mix, each struggling in his own way for salvation.
Eventide Arts presents The Price by Arthur Miller

Gertrude Lawrence Stage inside historic Dennis Union Church
713 Main Street, Route 6A
Dennis, MA 02638
Sunday, May 19, 2013, 2:30pm

The Price
by Arthur Miller
Directed by Toby Wilson
May 9 – May 26, 2013
Thursdays – Saturdays – 7:30 pm, Sundays – 2:30 pm
In the attic of a Manhattan brownstone, filled with sheet-draped furniture, piles of books, rolled up carpets, and an old Victrola, the lives of four people converge one late afternoon in November, 1967, and none of them is unchanged by the encounter. Victor and Esther Franz are waiting for an antiques dealer, Gregory Soloman, and Victor’s long estranged brother, Walter. The meeting of two brothers – one a successful surgeon, the other a police sergeant – takes place after many years of estrangement and is necessitated by the task of disposing of their parents' property. A wary civility soon gives way to accusations and counter-charges. Before these brothers part, festering bitterness, resentments and jealousies will boil over.
The Price is ostensibly about the amount of money an antique dealer is willing to pay for the roomful of items. Yet it is viscerally about the cost of doing business as a brother, a son, a spouse, and as a human being. Arthur Miller is a master at telling stories rooted in family dynamics. The Price explores sibling rivalry, confrontation with the past and with their memories, the effects of the Great Depression, the pursuit of a dream, and the responsibility one must assume for one's own life.

Category: Arts/Entertainment
Cost: $20
Email: info@eventidearts.org
Artist/event website: www.eventidearts.org

Mother/Daughter Art Exhibit: "Paints and Textiles"

Maser Gallery at Falmouth Community Television
310A Dillingham Ave.
Sunday, May 19, 2013, 3 – 5pm

Falmouth – Artwork by Jane Parhiala and her daughter, Kira Doutt, will be on display at the Maser Gallery at Falmouth Community Television from May 5 through May 30, 2013. The public is invited to the Opening Reception, Sunday, May 5, from 3:00 to 5:00PM.

Jane Parhiala is a fiber artist living in Falmouth. For over a decade she has been knitting and designing felted hats. Last year she began weaving on a Japanese Saori loom. Saori is a free style type of weaving which is taught at the Falmouth Art Center. “Weaving gives me the opportunity to explore a theme and then communicate it through color and texture,” Jane explains.
Her projects are inspired by her surroundings and are functional and fun.

Kira Doutt is a sophomore studying painting at Massachusetts college of art and design. She mainly works with oil paint but enjoys sculpture, papermaking, watercolor and printmaking on the side. Many of the paintings presented in this show pull from wall paper and fabric design influences. Kira enjoys finding a certain technique and sticking with it until she discovers what pulls her towards the process. This semester she focused on using patterns in the background for many of her paintings. “I enjoy how the use of patterns can overwhelm and isolate the subject. In general, I look for a moment that captures my attention,” says Kira.
“It can be the slight tilt to a person’s posture or the way the light hits the flaking paint on a wall - these moments are important to capture because something tells you (consciously or unconsciously) that they have meaning to you.”

Maser Gallery Exhibit Hours:
Sunday & Monday, 2-10 p.m.
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 10 -10 p.m., Friday 10-6 p.m.

Region: Lower Cape
Town: Falmouth
Category: Arts/Entertainment
Cost: Free
Email: marcia@fctv.org
Artist/event website: www.fctv.org

The Outer Cape Chorale sings 21st Century Choral Classics

Orleans' Nauset Regional Middle School,
70 Route 28 at Main Street
Sunday, May 19, 2013, 3 – 4:30pm

Beautiful new works by American composers
Featuring works by Eric Whitacre, Morten Lauridsen, Ola Gjeilo, Kentaro Sato, Gwyneth Walker, Randall Stroope and more…
Accompanied by John Thomas, piano, and eight string players from the Cape Cod and Providence Symphony Orchestras.

The Outer Cape Chorale begins its twelfth season with a concert of exquisite compositions by American composers – almost all written in the last eight years. Most of the works have never been performed on the Cape before, and several have never been performed in Massachusetts. The names of Eric Whitacre, Morten Lauridsen, Ola Gjeilo, Kentaro Sato, Gwyneth Walker, Randall Stroope, Abbie Betinis, Grant Cochran, Frank Ticelli and Stephen Paulus will no doubt be unfamiliar to most concert-goers, but the stunning music these composers have created is sure to delight them. Many members of the Chorale have expressed the opinion that the concert’s music is the most beautiful the Chorale has ever performed.

Region: Lower Cape
Town: Provincetown
Category: Arts/Entertainment
Cost: Free admission, A goodwill collection will be taken.
Phone: 508-487-0477
Email: info@outercapechorale.org
Artist/event website: www.outercapechorale.org

"Greater Tuna," - a hilarious comedy satire on life in Tuna, TX

Chatham Drama Guild
134 Crowell Road
Chatham, MA 02633
Sunday, May 19, 2013, 8pm

The Chatham Drama Guild at 134 Crowell Road in Chatham presents GREATER TUNA by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears and Ed Howard, the hilarious comedy about Texas' third smallest town, where the Lion's Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies. The eclectic band of citizens that make up this town are portrayed by only two performers - Jeff Spencer (also the director) and Don Howell - making this satire on life in rural America even more delightful as they depict all of the inhabitants of Tuna -- men, women, children and animals. The show will run three weekends from May 17-June 2 on Fridays and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Reserve your seats now by calling the CDG box office at 508-945-0510. Tickets are $12 for students w/ID and $18 for adults and may be reserved by calling the CDG Box Office at 508-945-0510.
