American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands Chapter Offers Free Flu Checklist and Tips

The American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands Chapter, is encouraging the public to be prepared for flu season. A flu checklist which provides information about the different types of flu, gives tips for avoiding the flu, lists common symptoms of the flu and suggests steps to take if someone you know becomes infected with the flu. The checklist can be found online at www.cciredcross.org or by calling (508) 775-1540 or (866) 762-1928.

The federal government estimates that as many as 40 percent of the country’s population could become ill with the flu this fall and winter. The H1N1 (swine flu) virus is a potentially serious health issue for families, schools and businesses across the country and the world. While the government is uncertain how widespread or severe the H1N1 flu virus will be this year, there are simple things people can do right now to prepare for it.

Parents should review flu plans at their children’s schools and day care centers. Employees should ask about work policies on tele-working or staying home when a relative is sick with the flu or a child’s school is closed.

The American Red Cross recommends that people follow common sense public health practices and store extra supplies. These steps are helpful for both the H1N1 virus and the seasonal flu virus each year:

• Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
• Cover your mouth and nose with tissues when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow.
• Minimize contact with people who are sick as much as possible, and stay home when you are sick.

Get flu shots for both seasonal flu and H1N1. Get the seasonal flu shot early. Groups at the highest risk for contracting H1N1 should get vaccinated as soon as shots become available.

Stock homes with extra food, water and supplies to reduce the need to go out in public when taking care of a sick loved one or if schools and businesses have temporarily closed due to widespread outbreak. The Red Cross recommends storing the following supplies: a two-week supply of food, water, prescription and non-prescription medications, and health and cleaning supplies such as soap, tissues, thermometers, bleach and hand sanitizer. Water should be in clean plastic containers and hold a gallon of water per person per day. Household preparation steps should also include baby supplies, food for special nutritional needs, copies of important personal documents, extra pet food and cash.

During a flu outbreak the Red Cross remains committed to its core services of maintaining a safe blood supply, educating the public on preparedness, and providing disaster relief to those in need.

Forever Young: A Celebration of Folk Music in New England

Presented by The New England Folk Music Archives, hosted by the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. The New England Folk Music Archives was launched in March 2009 with collections that reach well back into the last century. Some of the Archives’ strongest collections have to do with the folk revival of the late 1950s and 1960s in and around Cambridge and Boston. But the roots of the music scene, then and now, reach well back into the nineteenth century and came out of a long, local tradition of interest in folk music, folksong collecting, and cultural revivals. This exhibition features photographs and other memorabilia from roots of the contemporary folk scene. Images from the Club 47 and Newport Folk Festivals from the late 1950s and early 1960s will be displayed along with more recent additions. Portions of the collections of Betsy Siggins, John Cooke, Dick Waterman, Melissa Bugg, Walter Petrule, Byron Lord Lindaros and others will be included. The mission of The New England Folk Music Archives is to “Bring the Legacy to Life” and in that spirit will be sponsoring live events to supplement the exhibition. A Kick Off Concert featuring Tripping Lily is planned for March 6th at 8pm ($15), Mark Erelli in concert on March 14 at 8pm ($15) and a closing reception on March 20, followed by a talk on Music and Education by Naomi Arenberg, former host of Folk on WGBH and current WCAI personality, who will then host a “Cape Celebrates Folk” concert at 8pm (tickets are $10).

Moby-Dick Marathon

“Call me Ishmael.”
With those words, the What’s Falmouth Reading Committee launches the Moby-Dick Marathon, a nonstop reading of Herman Melville’s great American classics. Beginning at noon on Saturday, March 13, the reading will continue through the night at the Falmouth Public Library and end approximately 24 hours later at noon on March 14. The public is invited to sign up for reading spots.
The committee will transform the library’s Hermann Foundation Room into The Spouter Inn for the day, with refreshments available for readers and spectators. Readers will include local celebrities, teachers, students, selectmen, clergy, professionals and other lovers of Moby-Dick from throughout the region. Admission is free.
The Moby-Dick Marathon has been a longstanding annual tradition in places like the New Bedford Whaling Museum and Mystic Seaport, where our region’s historical ties to whaling continue to be studied and celebrated. The marathon comes to Falmouth this year as part of What’s Falmouth Reading’s Moby-Dick programs, which began in January with a film and lecture series, as well as a townwide book club that continues to meet each Wednesday. “We couldn’t be more pleased with Falmouth’s embrace of this great novel,” said Jill Erickson, head of the library’s Reference Department. “Nearly every lecture and film showing has been standing-room only, and the book club boasts some 30 members.”

A quality art education provides the knowledge, skills, and techniques with which our students can express ideas in ways in which cannot be expressed through language alone.

A critical part of our sequential art program is to provide students with instruction from elementary school through high school so students can develop their skills in creating, revising, exhibiting, and assessing their art work.

The work that will be on display is a collection of techniques, themes, and approaches to drawing, painting, photography, and mixed media.

Additional pieces of student art work for Youth Art Month will be on display at the Falmouth Public Library, 300 Main Street, from March 10 – March 31.

Heart to Heart, Free Bereavement Support Program for Children

Heart to Heart, a free six-session family bereavement support program hosted by the VNA, will begin on Monday, January 18 from 6:00 – 7:30 pm at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod for children ages 5-13 who have experienced the loss of a parent, sibling, or grandparent. Meetings will be held every other week through March. Children and parents/adults could come to one or both sessions. A pizza dinner will be provided. Meetings are designed to offer education, information, and support on grief and loss for children and families and are particularly ideal for children ages 5 to 13. VNA Hospice staff and volunteers with special training will be facilitating the groups, which will be divided by age with a separate group for the parents/adults. Pre registration is required. The Cultural Center is located at 307 Old Main St. in South Yarmouth.
