Featured speakers will include City Clerk June Lagmay, whose office will run the "back office" operations for next year's Neighborhood Council elections. Also speaking will be Jill Banks Barad, the founder and chair of the Valley Alliance of NCs (VANC), which just celebrated its 10th anniversary. And of course you can expect to see our Department of Neighborhood Empowerment General Manager Grayce Liu there as well.

The next training opportunity is not scheduled until the citywide Congress of Neighborhoods to be held in downtown City Hall on Saturday, September 28, 2013 (mark your calendar) so take advantage of this opportunity.

MUSEUM OF THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY HONORS THE BIG READ PROGRAM
The Museum of the San Fernando Valley will host “A Grand Souk Festival” on Sunday, May 19th at El Rancho Cordillera del Norte from 11:30 am until 5:00 pm. This open air bazaar of arts and culture is a culminating celebration of the Big Read Program through the National Endowment for the Arts and the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. This Valley celebration is sponsored by The Museum of the San Fernando Valley, a participant in this year’s Big Read Program.

As a multi-cultural festival, the event will feature art, music crafts and theatre based on and reflective of the writing of Nobel Prize-winner, Naguib Mahfouz, author of The Thief and the Dogs, a novel that takes place near the bazaars of Cairo, Egypt. Visitors will be treated to a rich tapestry of experiences representing the diverse cultural crossroads of a Middle Eastern marketplace.

Artists, musicians, singers, dancers, story-tellers, weavers and muralists from many Los Angeles communities collaborate to create the authentic feel of a bustling and joyous bazaar. Food and beverages will be available at a modest cost from the Rancho’s cantina on-site. Parking is available at the Rancho and there will be plenty of street parking. All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. The Rancho is located at 9015 Wilbur Avenue on the Southwest corner of Wilbur and Nordhoff. This alcohol, tobacco and drug-free event is free to the public, although donations are appreciated. All proceeds go to the Museum of the San Fernando Valley. Prop 30 passed, now what? LAUSD School Board Vice President Tamar Galatzan invites the public to a candid, interactive discussion about Governor Brown’s proposed Local Control Funding Formula, LAUSD’s budget, and the future of affiliated charter schools.

The Spring 2013 Valley Schools’ Task Force will feature LAUSD’s Chief Strategy Officer Matt Hill and LAUSD’s Director of Government Relations, Edgar Zazueta.
