Joseph Wheeler Memorial Service

McCurdy Pavilion
Saturday, November 28, 2009, 2 – 3pm

The memorial service for Centrum Founding Director Joseph F. Wheeler will take place Saturday, November 28, at 2 pm at Fort Worden State Park’s McCurdy Pavilion.

Wheeler passed away on November 2 at the age of 77 at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle. He was surrounded by his family, including his wife Renate, and his children. Wheeler served as Centrum’s first executive director from 1973 to 1996, and remained an active board member and fundraiser since his retirement

The housing of the service at McCurdy Pavilion reflects the fruits of Wheeler’s labor to transform of Fort Worden’s old WWI-era dirigible hangar into the 1,200-seat concert hall of McCurdy Pavilion. Together with David Marriott, the National Historic Preservation Society, and Washington State Parks, Wheeler led the capital fundraising campaign. He found matching funds for a state grant thanks to the generous support of Edmund Littlefield, Jr.; private foundations; the city of Port Townsend; and many individual donors.

More info: www.centrum.org…

Techniques Master Class in Nonfiction: February 4-7

Various
Thursday, February 4 – Sunday, February 7, 2010

with Judith Kitchen.

Designed for nascent, emerging, and established writers of creative nonfiction, this three-session techniques workshop will focus on generating new work. We’ll look at some of the properties of “shorts,” whether in short personal essays or in the segments that sometimes add up to memoir. The accompanying discussion will center on structural issues and strategies to strengthen a piece’s natural tendencies. The goal is at least one new piece through this workshop, as well as to gain a deeper understanding of the craft of nonfiction.

More info: www.centrum.org…

Various
Thursday, April 8 – Sunday, April 11, 2010

Spend a long weekend soaking up Cajun culture, music, food and dance with some of the most interesting people currently making noise in Southwest Louisiana. BonSoir, CatinThe Lafayette region boasts THE most vibrant musical scene in the United States right now, with old music, new music, and seriously talented musicians, young and old, playing both. The region in recent years has produced young bands such as Feufollet, the Red Stick Ramblers, Hungry Hungry, the Pine Leaf Boys, Cedric Watson and Bijoux Creole, and The Lafayette Rhythm Devils.

One group who has emerged recently is BonSoir, Catin, an all-women’s outfit who play Cajun music with an attitude. Kristi Guillory pumps the accordion and sings with reckless abandon. Anya Burgess, also a member of the Magnolia Sisters, rides the fiddle hard, and in fact plays a fiddle that she made. Christine Balfa (vocals and guitar), Dewey's youngest, took up the family banner with her band Balfa Toujours, and has made quite a splash this spring with her solo triangle recording on Valcour. Yvette Landry, a native of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, currently lives in her family home in St. Martin Parish. She’s a former Crawfish Festival Queen, and is often called the "queen of Cajun bass." Plays accordion, too. They’ll be joined by mighty Courtney Granger, a fiddler and singer without peer, a man who says "Music is my life, it's all I know."

More info: www.centrum.org…
