Serving his first term as Governor of Kansas, Sam Brownback has proven to be an innovative reformer seeking to expand liberty in the Sunflower State. Before taking over in Topeka, Governor Brownback represented Kansas in the U.S. Senate from 1996-2011 and in the U.S. House from 1995-1996.

Governor Brownback has aggressively taken on Kansas' tax model - most notably, by enacting the largest income tax cut in Kansas' history and seeking, as part of a broader package of reforms, to reduce it even further.

Come out on Monday, May 20 at 7:00pm to Ryan Auditorium to hear bestselling author Dinesh D’Souza speak on diversity. It’s sure to be a fascinating discussion from a very interesting speaker, and we’re proud to be able to welcome him to Northwestern! D’Souza, the author of 12 books, including the controversial and bestselling The End of Racism, and former fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, served as President of King’s College in New York from 2010-2012.

“One of D’Souza’s favorite venues for debates and speeches has been college campuses. During the past 20 years, he has appeared at hundreds of colleges and universities, and has spoken with hundreds of thousands of students in these live settings.

Born in Mumbai, India, D’Souza came to U.S. as an exchange student and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth College in 1983.

D’Souza has been named one of America’s most influential conservative thinkers by the New York Times Magazine. The World Affairs Council lists him as one of the nation’s 500 leading authorities on international issues, and Newsweek cited him as one of the country’s most prominent Asian Americans.

D’Souza’s articles have appeared in virtually every major magazine and newspaper, including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic Monthly, Vanity Fair, New Republic, and National Review. He has appeared on numerous television programs, including the Today Show, Nightline, The News Hour, O’Reilly Factor, Moneyline, and Hannity.” (YAF.org)

Resolved: America Needs an Internet Tax

The so-called “Marketplace Fairness Act” now racing through Congress would effectively impose a tax on Internet sales. Specifically, it would authorize individual states to compel online and catalog retailers, no matter where they are located, to collect taxes at the time of a sale at the rate applicable to the buyer’s location and to remit those taxes to the local taxing authorities. As the legislation’s title implies, its proponents insist that it is only “fair” to tax sales by online, catalog, and brick-and-mortar retailers the same; otherwise, they say, brick-and-mortar sales will suffer in comparison and states will lose badly-needed revenue. Opponents say that brick-and-mortar stores can and already do also make Internet sales, that an online tax would impose burdens that do not apply to brick-and-mortar stores that sell to out-of-state residents, that the costs of compliance would be unmanageable, and that that a tax on Internet sales is just another revenue grab that will lead to bigger government and slower economic growth.

Congressman Peter Roskam will speak about the threats to Medicare Part D and the state of health care in America. Part D has proven that a modernized system – one that funds prescription drugs, focusing on the neediest seniors, and avoiding price controls on prescription drugs – can bend the cost curve down AND provide quality patient service.
Today, Part D is one of the rare entitlement programs that targets the truly needy and costs less than what was originally budgeted, and that cost doesn’t even include an offset for expenses involving surgery and hospitalization avoided by the availability of drugs.
Unfortunately, some groups continue to agitate against Part D’s effective approach, as The Hill reports. Instead of allowing market forces to determine drug prices, these groups want to put government in the driver’s seat, raising the real potential for Washington rationing drugs for Medicare patients. This was exactly the circumstance Part D was created to avoid.
So please join The Heartland Institute for hors d’oeuvres and a discussion about why Part D deserves defending and why government shouldn’t be allowed to ruin it.
