DESCRIPTION:Art Installation by Liselott Johnsson. Intrigued by the form
al boundaries of painting as they relate to objects and architecture\, L
 iselott Johnsson uses materials\, space\, color\, light\, and geometry t
o study the limits of these boundaries. In this architectural installati
on\, a series of eleven colorful geometric paintings are displayed as an
architectural frieze that surrounds the library reading room at Grove H
all Branch of the Boston Public Library. Inspired by ancient alphabets a
nd the recent invention of High Capacity Color Barcode\, Liselott Johnss
on created her own writing system resulting in abstract paintings that a
ctually have semantic meaning. Different from the traditional alphabet\,
these symbols employ color and simple geometry inspired by modernist pa
inting\, décor\, signal flags\, and fashion. Each of the paintings exhib
its three pictorial signs side by side that form a word\; the series of
paintings creates a poem. By limiting the structure of the words to thre
e letters\, the sentence in itself appears to be a code. Consequently\,
the viewer ends up doubting not only the paintings but also the meaning
of the text itself. This condition of ambiguity is an invitation to tres
pass habitual thinking and to dissolve preconceived ideas\, the objectiv
 e being flexibility and openness.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition features the riches of the Boston Public Lib
rary’s William P. Trent Collection of Defoe and Defoeana. One the most c
omprehensive rare book collections of Defoe’s works\, the Trent Collecti
on also features works that represent the early print culture of his tim
 e. This exhibition displays Defoe’s novels\, positioning them within the
larger context of his other writing. The exhibition provides insight in
to Defoe’s novels\, his life as a writer\, and the lively British cultur
e that helped to give birth to this new art form.\n \n This exhibition i
s the result of an innovative ongoing partnership between UMass Boston's
English M.A. Program and the Boston Public Library. UMass Boston studen
ts take a course in the Rare Books and Manuscripts Room\, engaging in ha
nds-on research that generates a student-curated exhibition. This exhibi
tion presents the findings from a seminar that focused on the rise of th
e novel. Previous years’ topics have included books from colonial Boston
\, Shakespeare\, and public poetry.\n \n The exhibition is free and open
to the general public. It is located in the Rare Books Lobby on the thi
rd floor of the Boston Public Library’s McKim Building in Copley Square
 \, and is open Monday-Friday\, 9:00-5:00.\n \n Daniel Defoe (c. 1660-1731
) helps to invent one of our most popular and important forms of literat
ure: the novel. Not only does he write some of the first English novels
\, he imagines some of our most compelling novelistic plots. In Robinson
Crusoe (1719)\, he famously depicts a man shipwrecked on an island\, det
ailing the strategies Crusoe uses to create a “civilization of one”—and
survive cannibal attacks! In Moll Flanders (1721) he imagines a woman wh
o navigates the teeming streets of London\, surviving by her wits\, her
beauty\, and her pick-pocketing skills. In these novels\, Defoe captures
extreme challenges to human existence and explores how the individual t
hinks through difficulties and achieves success.\n \n Defoe writes much
more than the novel. One of the most popular “hack” writers of the early
eighteenth century\, Defoe is credited with authoring over 400 differen
t works. He writes “how to” conduct books (The Family Instructor)\, hist
orical accounts (A Journal of the Plague Year)\, religious pamphlets (Th
e Shortest Way with the Dissenters)\, economic essays (The Complete Engl
ish Tradesman) and supernatural studies (An Essay on…Apparitions). Also
considered a founder of modern journalism\, Defoe writes one of the firs
t newspapers\, the Review. His willingness to enter into political and r
eligious controversy gets him arrested and placed in the pillory—and he
responds by writing a poem (Hymn to the Pillory) that wins over the crow
ds who gather to see him. At the end of an amazingly prolific career\, w
hen he is in his late 50s\, Defoe interweaves the strands of thought cap
tured in these many forms of writings\, places them in fictional context
s\, and embodies them in fictional characters. The novel is born!

DESCRIPTION:Jules Aarons is an important figure in documenting the West
End of Boston before the ravages of Urban Renewal. His photography bears
  witness to the vibrant\, close-knit old neighborhood—the people\, their
lives and their relationships. Where city planners saw the West End as
a candidate for modernization\, Jules Aarons saw something else: “I knew
that the dynamics of people whose social relationships involved their n
eighbors and the streets could be a source of creativity\,” he wrote. Th
e photographs in this exhibition capture a West End far removed from tod
ay’s — streets with remarkably few cars\; political posters\; adults cha
tting outside doorways\; children showing off for the camera or so deep
in conversation they don’t notice it at all.\n \n Biography\n A Bronx na
tive\, Aarons (b. 1921 – d. 2008) was born and grew up in the same urban
neighborhood\, which might explain his affinity for Boston communities
like the Old West End and the North End. He first came to the city as a
Boston University graduate student and later earned his doctorate at the
University of Paris. Ultimately\, he returned to the Boston area\, join
ed the B.U. faculty and became a world-renowned expert in the study of r
adio-wave propagation. But from his late adolescence through his academi
 c and scientific rise\, photography—especially street photography—remain
ed a constant passion. Aarons’ photographs of the West End and North End
were taken on late afternoons and weekends with a double-lens Rolleifle
x camera\, and he made his own prints.\n \n Opening Reception 6pm-8pm on
Friday\, May 10\n Free to all. No registration necessary.\n \n Exhibiti
on Tours\n \n For the complete story of Aarons and his work\, sign up fo
r one of our exhibition tours with Arlette and Gus Kayafas. Arlette is t
he guest-curator of the exhibition\, and the founder and director of Gal
lery Kayafas in Boston’s South End. Both were personal friends of Jules
Aarons and will be happy to discuss him and his techniques in depth.\n
\n Please sign up for one of the tours below:\n Wednesday\, May 15th\, 20

 ly 22nd\, 2013 at 6:30pm-8pm\n \n Cost: $15 Non-members/ $7 Members\n Pr

seum dedicated to the collection\, preservation and interpretation of th
e history and culture of the West End of Boston. The Museum acknowledges
its role as an educational institution and a trustee of significant mat
erial culture.\n \n The West End Museum fulfills its mission by providin
g exhibits to the public on a regular basis\, by providing access to its

DESCRIPTION:The period following the French and Indian War (1754-1763) w
as a time of change and discovery in North America. In this display of c

t the standard for nautical charting for nearly half a century.\n \n Usi
ng nearly 30 items\, including nautical charts\, navigational instrument

DESCRIPTION:The star of Animal Planet’s popular My Cat from Hell\, Jacks
on Galaxy\, a.k.a. “Cat Daddy\,” isn’t what you might expect as far as c
at experts are concerned (as The New York Times noted\, he “looks like a
Hells Angel”). Yet Galaxy’s ability to connect with even the most troub
led felines is truly astonishing. In this book\, Galaxy tells the story
of his thirteen-year relationship with a petite gray-and-white cat named
Benny—and offers his singular advice for caring for the feline in your
home.\n \n Jackson Galaxy has been called everything from a cat trainer
to a cat shrink. Drawing on his years of experience in animal shelters a
nd as a consultant\, his unique approach to cat care offers people a dee
per understanding of why their cats act out. He maintains a private cons
ulting practice in Los Angeles. His show\, My Cat from Hell\, will be en
tering its fourth season in April 2013.\n \n Program note:\n Seating wil
l begin at 1:30 p.m. Seating in Rabb Lecture Hall is limited and is done
on a first-come\, first-served basis. Jackson will answer general quest
ions about his book and his background\; however\, he cannot take questi
 ons that pertain specifically to someone’s cat and its behavior.&nbsp\;
Following the talk\, a book signing will take place.&nbsp\; Books will b
e sold for fifteen dollars and can be purchased with cash\, credit card
\, or personal check with ID. The first 16 people in line will receive a
 free Cat Daddy tote\, which Jackson will autograph.&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
Jackson will only sign his book and Cat Daddy tote.&nbsp\; Only service
animals are permitted to enter the library.
