This three-day Italian Festival is held every third week in July an is a celebration of the Italian culture. Central Square transforms itself into a Italian "piazza" style setting where people capture the essence of community and a feeling of unity. Thousands flock to East Boston to enjoy it. During the festival people can sample authentic Italian cooking from various food carts, while enjoying the free entertainment and cultural attractions. It's here that they can greet family and see friends they haven't seen in years or meet new people just the same! While second and third generation Italian-Americans can come and appreciate the richness of their culture, people of all other different cultures can enjoy the festival and gain an education in Italian traditions. The festival has something for everyone from kiddies to seniors.

On July 18th, at 6pm, the 808 Gallery will open its doors to exhibit the fresh face of Boston contemporary art. The third annual juried Boston Young Contemporaries Exhibition (BYC) represents eleven New England Master of Fine Arts and Post-Baccalaureate programs. This year's show includes over 90 emerging East Coast artists and encompasses a variety of contemporary painting, photography, video, and sculpture. Along with 159 artworks, and live music performed by DJ Ari Joseph, the BYC in a combined effort with Whole Foods Market will feature an edible instillation commenting on environmental degradation.

Professional musician Lin Zhantao and his students will offer two concerts of traditional Chinese music. Their ensemble will include erhu, zhonghu, gaohu, and banhu. These instruments belong to the huqin family of two-stringed bowed instruments and are commonly known in the West as “Chinese violin” or “Chinese two-stringed fiddle.” Although similar in appearance and manner of play, each instrument creates a unique sound varying from high to low pitches. Come listen to the ensemble play as they introduce songs from China.

And as barriers are blasted away, the sprawling cutting-edge unit has been fittingly graced with two Gold-selling albums, four Dove Awards, two Stellar Awards, a Soul Train Award, six 2007 Grammy® Award nominations and a Grammy® Award for Best Traditional Gospel Album for the scorching Alive in South Africa project. Ironically, there is very little that is "traditional" about the way Israel and his group have been working their evangelical magic.

The group’s sixth Integrity Music CD, A Deeper Level (recorded live at the annual A Deeper Level Conference in Houston) rejoices in the glorious strides they’ve already achieved while revealing a higher calling for Christians to become more engaged in the work God has for all to do on our troubled planet. The seriousness with which this project was helmed was evident in the 40-day fast that preceded Israel and New Breed’s three days of recording, its purpose to petition the Lord to give everyone who hears the new music a heart to go deeper in worship that leads to acts of compassion and justice. The songs are the soundtrack to a companion book to be issued by Whitaker House Publishers that more explicitly details the Christian’s responsibility to be at the forefront of global compassion and justice. In short, A Deeper Level represents the Power of God on Earth at a time when it is stronger than ever yet more desperately needed than ever.

The concert will feature the world premiere of “Speak, Sing, Whale,” by Steven Feigenbaum. In addition to the world premiere, performances include Overture to The Thieving Magpie, by Gioachino Rossini, Nocturnes: “Nuages and Fêtes,” by Claude Debussy, “Menuetto” from Cassation in G (Toy Symphony), by Leopold Mozart, The Seasons: “Autumn,” by Alexander Glazunov, Water Music, by George Frideric Handel, and “The Moldau” from My Fatherland, by Bedrich Smetana.

Stephen Feigenbaum, 19-year-old Winchester resident and award-winning composer, currently studies music at Yale University. His composition, “Speak, Sing, Whale,” combines sample recordings of whale sounds with a lush chamber orchestration that evokes ocean waves.

The Orchestra’s mission is to present high quality professional orchestral music for free to diverse audiences that include residents of and visitors to Boston. Last year, over 50,000 people attended Landmarks Festival at the Shell, which will take place this year every Wednesday at 7pm at the DRC’s Hatch Shell on the Esplanade.

Backed by the Boston Swing band, the Massachusetts-born Mahar, whose influences span the music of Sinatra, Dean Martin, Harry Connick, Jr., Glen Miller, Presley, Doo Wop and 50's rock 'n roll, gave up the construction industry for a full-time career in show business "mostly to improve chances of meeting Jennifer Love Hewitt," he admits.

His 2000 CD Blame It On My Youth, boasts 11 songs ranging from "One for My Baby and One More for the Road," to "Pennies From Heaven," "Send in the Clowns," "Autumn Leaves," and "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime." His 2007 CD Careless Moon, a musical dedication to "finding love, losing love, and finding it again," lists songs such as "Route 66," "Let's Kiss," "Got No Heart," and "Too Close for Comfort."

Monday, July 21, 1 - 9 pm

Slides, a demonstration, and a discussion will engage participants with painterly techniques for using oxides, slips, underglazes, and glaze to enhance the textures and forms of their work. The slide presentation will show Zacharia's transitional and current work. The demonstration will focus on her current glazing techniques. Discussions with students will consider ideas and techniques for developing expressive relationships between form and surface.

(6 - 9 pm) (limited to those enrolled in Monday evening course plus a few others on first-enroll-first-serve basis)

Sheryl Zacharia's ceramics reflect her painting background and previous career as a singer-songwriter. She exhibits her work nationally and teaches at Greenwich House Pottery in New York City and the Art School at Old Church in Demarest New Jersey.

Read Boston Story Mobile in Chinatown Park

Hello Friends near Chinatown Park,

This summer the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy has arranged to have the City of Boston’s Read Boston Story Mobile in the Greenway Parks.

Every Monday afternoon at 1:15 in Chinatown Park, the van will be parked on the Kingston/Edinborough Road directly adjacent to the park and will read stories for a 45 minute session. At the end of the session, books are distributed to the children in attendance.

The age level is three to twelve years old and all are welcome.

Please help us spread the word and bring young children and grandchildren on Monday afternoons.

Thank you and we hope to see you in the Park.
