On February 3, the Zoo kicks off a weekend of fun, starting with Little Joe, who will be predicting the Super Bowl champ! Born at the Bronx Zoo in New York, but raised here in Boston, Little Joe has ties to both the Giants and the Pats. We know his heart lies with his family at Franklin Park Zoo, so we’ve got a feeling his pick will make us proud (and that the best team will prevail!). The Tropical Forest will have boxes with the team names on them and visitors are invited to come and watch what box/team Little Joe will go towards first!

On Sunday, February 5, join us in the Tropical Forest for Little Joe’s football-themed birthday party. See the gorilla exhibit festively decorated and watch as Little Joe and all of the gorillas enjoy birthday treats made especially for them! Additionally, visitors can sign a giant birthday card for Little Joe and enjoy cake by White’s Fine Cakes & Pastry (available on a first-come, first-serve basis).

Boston Ballet presents Simply Sublime

Simply Sublime includes three powerful works by three master choreographers George Balanchine, Michel Fokine and Christopher Wheeldon. Symphony in Three Movements is a large ensemble work, distinct in both its complexity and energy. The work is set to a score by Stravinsky, Balanchine’s long-time collaborator, and premiered in 1972 at a Stravinsky Festival at New York State Theater. The choreography, marked by its turned in movements and athletic sequences, is set to three movements originally composed by Stravinsky for three different films.

Florence Clerc’s world premiere staging of Les Sylphides after Michel Fokine, is also included in this repertory program. This one-act romantic work follows a poet as he dances with ghostly sylphs in a forest. Les Sylphides first premiered at the Maryinsky Theatre in 1908, under the title Reverie Romantique: Ballet sur la musique de Chopin. The work received its U.S. premiere by Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes at the Century Theatre in New York in 1916.

Polyphonia, Christopher Wheeldon’s playful romance for four couples, completes the program. The New York Times has described the work as “[handling] the classical vocabulary of Balanchine, Ashton and others without being inhibited or retro… with a constant supply or inventiveness.” Wheeldon’s mastery is displayed in his unique ability to weave classical and more contemporary dance movement in to four pas de deuxs which exude distinct qualities. Polyphonia first premiered in 2001 with New York City Ballet and has been in Boston Ballet’s repertoire since 2007. The Company presented Polyphonia to critical acclaim on the 2008 tour to Korea.

Stephen Petronio’s Underland is a sexy, enigmatic fusion of dance, music and visual imagery inspired by the tender, bittersweet songs of pop balladeer Nick Cave. Completing Petronio’s vision is an exquisite triptych of projected imagery by visual designer Ken Tabachnick and video artist Mike Daly as well as costumes by Tara Subkoff. Together with his superb company of 11 dancers, they create the provocative world that is Underland.
