The Imaginative Worlds of Daniel Defoe: Robinson Crusoe, Moll Flanders, and the Early Novel

This exhibition features the riches of the Boston Public Library’s William P. Trent Collection of Defoe and Defoeana. One the most comprehensive rare book collections of Defoe’s works, the Trent Collection also features works that represent the early print culture of his time. This exhibition displays Defoe’s novels, positioning them within the larger context of his other writing. The exhibition provides insight into Defoe’s novels, his life as a writer, and the lively British culture that helped to give birth to this new art form.

This exhibition is the result of an innovative ongoing partnership between UMass Boston's English M.A. Program and the Boston Public Library. UMass Boston students take a course in the Rare Books and Manuscripts Room, engaging in hands-on research that generates a student-curated exhibition. This exhibition presents the findings from a seminar that focused on the rise of the novel. Previous years’ topics have included books from colonial Boston, Shakespeare, and public poetry.

The exhibition is free and open to the general public. It is located in the Rare Books Lobby on the third floor of the Boston Public Library’s McKim Building in Copley Square, and is open Monday-Friday, 9:00-5:00.

Daniel Defoe (c. 1660-1731) helps to invent one of our most popular and important forms of literature: the novel. Not only does he write some of the first English novels, he imagines some of our most compelling novelistic plots. In Robinson Crusoe (1719), he famously depicts a man shipwrecked on an island, detailing the strategies Crusoe uses to create a “civilization of one”—and survive cannibal attacks! In Moll Flanders (1721) he imagines a woman who navigates the teeming streets of London, surviving by her wits, her beauty, and her pick-pocketing skills. In these novels, Defoe captures extreme challenges to human existence and explores how the individual thinks through difficulties and achieves success.

Defoe writes much more than the novel. One of the most popular “hack” writers of the early eighteenth century, Defoe is credited with authoring over 400 different works. He writes “how to” conduct books (The Family Instructor), historical accounts (A Journal of the Plague Year), religious pamphlets (The Shortest Way with the Dissenters), economic essays (The Complete English Tradesman) and supernatural studies (An Essay on…Apparitions). Also considered a founder of modern journalism, Defoe writes one of the first newspapers, the Review. His willingness to enter into political and religious controversy gets him arrested and placed in the pillory—and he responds by writing a poem (Hymn to the Pillory) that wins over the crowds who gather to see him. At the end of an amazingly prolific career, when he is in his late 50s, Defoe interweaves the strands of thought captured in these many forms of writings, places them in fictional contexts, and embodies them in fictional characters. The novel is born!

The Art Institute of Boston: Celebrating 100 Years is one of a number of exhibitions and other events scheduled at various venues throughout the Boston area during 2012-2013 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of The Art Institute of Boston. The exhibition also celebrates Boston Public Library's acquisition of works by Boston artists who have contributed to the Boston art scene both as professional artists and as long-time faculty members of The Art Institute of Boston who teach to nurture the talents of the next generation of Boston artists. The exhibition will show prints, drawings, and photographs by faculty and students of The Art Institute of Boston selected from the Print Department's collection of works on paper by artists with ties to Boston.

Life in the West End 1947-1953: the Photography of Jules Aarons

Jules Aarons is an important figure in documenting the West End of Boston before the ravages of Urban Renewal. His photography bears witness to the vibrant, close-knit old neighborhood—the people, their lives and their relationships. Where city planners saw the West End as a candidate for modernization, Jules Aarons saw something else: “I knew that the dynamics of people whose social relationships involved their neighbors and the streets could be a source of creativity,” he wrote. The photographs in this exhibition capture a West End far removed from today’s — streets with remarkably few cars; political posters; adults chatting outside doorways; children showing off for the camera or so deep in conversation they don’t notice it at all.

Biography
A Bronx native, Aarons (b. 1921 – d. 2008) was born and grew up in the same urban neighborhood, which might explain his affinity for Boston communities like the Old West End and the North End. He first came to the city as a Boston University graduate student and later earned his doctorate at the University of Paris. Ultimately, he returned to the Boston area, joined the B.U. faculty and became a world-renowned expert in the study of radio-wave propagation. But from his late adolescence through his academic and scientific rise, photography—especially street photography—remained a constant passion. Aarons’ photographs of the West End and North End were taken on late afternoons and weekends with a double-lens Rolleiflex camera, and he made his own prints.

Charting an Empire: The Atlantic Neptune

The period following the French and Indian War (1754-1763) was a time of change and discovery in North America. In this display of charts, views, and maritime objects, we look at the decade following the war, when Britain set out to accurately chart the coast and survey the inland areas of their new resource-rich empire in Atlantic Canada, as well as the eastern seaboard extending from New England to the West Indies. The resulting charts were published collectively by Joseph Frederick Wallet Des Barres in The Atlantic Neptune, a maritime atlas which set the standard for nautical charting for nearly half a century.

Using nearly 30 items, including nautical charts, navigational instruments and ship models, dating from the 18th century to the present, this exhibition examines the importance of accurate charting of the new empire, defines how Britain put her mark on the land, and explores the complex processes of marine surveying and nautical chart production.

Chévere! Exploring Afro-Cuban Culture

New York-based visual artists Clara Morera, Cepp Selgas, Bernardo Navarro, and Jorge Valdés will exhibit their works at the Multicultural Arts Center in Cambridge. Heavily influenced by their Cuban heritage and upbringing, these four artists explore African icons and religious syncretization, and present us with artworks inspired by their formative years on the Island. Curated by Astrid Martinez-Jones of Latin Art Space, the exhibition Chévere! (a word of Yoruba origin meaning cool or great) highlights the African religious traditions and folklore that are so entrenched in Cuban society. Temporary Closure for Building Improvements

The municipal building that houses the Uphams Corner Branch of the Boston Public Library at 500 Columbia Road in Dorchester will undergo building improvements in May. The building improvements necessitate a temporary closure of the branch while work takes place. The temporary closure period will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2013. Construction will begin on Tuesday, May 28, and is expected to be completed in September 2013. There are a variety of improvements planned for the building in which the Uphams Corner Branch is located: new roof, downspouts, and gutters; repointing of the masonry; installation of new windows; rebuilding the exterior and interior stairs; and installation of a new heating system. During the temporary closure period, Uphams Corner Branch users are encouraged to use the Grove Hall Branch, located at 41 Geneva Avenue in Dorchester; and the Dudley Branch, located at 65 Warren Street in Roxbury; as well as any of the Boston Public Library’s other locations throughout the city.

The Online Learning Readiness Program (OLLR) at Boston
Neighborhood Network is a training program geared at helping job seekers enhance and acquire new computer and professional skills. OLLR participants are looking to become more attractive to prospective employers, improve computer skills, create effective resumes, cover letters and more.

A signature program under the City of Boston’s Sustainable Broadband Adoption initiative, OLLR is a twelve-week web-based curriculum developed by the Timothy Smith Network, that teaches participants how to become successful in an online learning environment; use email and the internet; acquire basic technology skills in Microsoft programs; understand "cyber-safety"; create materials
needed for job searches and acquire appropriate workforce readiness skills and techniques such as interviewing and time management.

OLLR at Boston Neighborhood Network is eager to assist adults looking to learn how to use web-based technologies in order to prepare for possible employment in corporate America. The program, sponsored by a grant from the Department of Commerce, is free of charge. Graduates are eligible to receive a Netbook with $50 co-pay.

The iconic coaches will share insights from their extensive experiences teaching athletes – providing coaching tips, tricks and advice for anyone interested in mentoring and instructing young competitors.

A signature program under the City of Boston’s Sustainable Broadband Adoption initiative, OLLR is a twelve-week web-based curriculum developed by the Timothy Smith Network, that teaches participants how to become successful in an online learning environment; use email and the internet; acquire basic technology skills in Microsoft programs; understand "cyber-safety"; create materials
needed for job searches and acquire appropriate workforce readiness skills and techniques such as interviewing and time management.

OLLR at Boston Neighborhood Network is eager to assist adults looking to learn how to use web-based technologies in order to prepare for possible employment in corporate America.
