n argues that humans are social primates with an innate tendency for hie
rarchical and authoritarian social and political structures and that dem
ocracy requires very special “enabling conditions” before it can be supp
orted by a state—conditions that require decades to evolve. As a result
\, attempts to export democracy through nation-building to states without
these enabling conditions are doomed to failure.\n\nPeterson is directo

Life and more than 100 publications. He has served as president of the N

X-TRUMBA-CUSTOMFIELD;NAME="Summary";ID=153;TYPE=MultiLine:The social and
political complexity of the French Antillean islands\, a result of slav
ery\, colonization\, and departmentalization\, has lead to an equally co
mplex sense of self among Antillean peoples. Positioned culturally betwe
en Africa and France\, belonging to both and yet to neither\, Antilleans
face a daunting task in defining an individual and collective identity.
However\, over the past twenty years a body of children’s literature wr
itten by and for Antilleans has emerged\, suggesting through its textual
and visual content an attempt to address the issue of identity at a for
mative level. Many texts appear to promote in some way Antillean solidar
ity through their depictions of black heroes\, Caribbean geographical co
ntexts\, and historical representations. Establishing pride in one’s ant
illanité while guiding readers away from the self-hatred that has so oft
en resulted from French hegemony is an undeniably important process. How
ever\, as Guadeloupean author Maryse Condé points out\, this solidarity
remains a myth so long as Antillean children perpetuate the same attitud
e as the colonizers toward the Other. This talk will focus on how\, thro
ugh her literature\, Condé seeks to encourage an identity not restricted
by insular views of the Antilles but rather one that is enhanced by an
appreciation for the diverse world they belong to. We will examine how C
ondé advocates a balance between a strong sense of Antillean selfhood an
d the recognition of a broader\, more human solidarity.\n\nThis free mon
thly lecture series was developed in 2007 by the College's School of Art
s and Letters to highlight diverse faculty research projects. The presen
tations include a 40-minute lecture followed by 20 minutes of questions
and answers. Refreshments are served. All colloquia are held from 3:40 t
 o 4:40 p.m. in Tower Hall\, room 4119.

n Directed by Tammy Ostrander \n\nTeevan’s edgy interpretation of the
Greek classic finds the Greek fleet amassed at Aulis\, prepared to depar
t for Troy to retrieve Helen\, but stalled by the lack of favorable wind
 s. In order to placate the gods and end the doldrums\, Agamemnon is pres
sured by his brother\, Menaleus (Helen’s husband)\, to sacrifice his old
est daughter\, Iphegenia. Vainglory\, familial loyalty\, patriotism and
sacrifice collide at the brink of a conflict few of them fully understan
 d. A chorus of vigorous and lusty young women lend commentary on the act
 ion and the characters.

m believes that Americans increasingly treat education as though its pri
mary goal were to teach students to be economically productive rather th
an to think critically and become knowledgeable and empathetic citizens.
She argues that this focus on profitable skills has eroded our ability
to criticize authority\, reduced our sympathy with the marginalized and
different\, and damaged our competence to deal with complex global probl
ems. The loss of these basic capacities jeopardizes the health of democr
acies and the hope of a decent world.\n\nNussbaum is the Ernst Freund Di
stinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics in the Philosophy Depart
ment\, Law School and Divinity School at the University of Chicago. She
is the author of many books including Hiding from Humanity: Disgust\, Sh
ame and the Law and Not for Profit: Why Democracy Needs the Humanities.

X-TRUMBA-CUSTOMFIELD;NAME="Summary";ID=153;TYPE=MultiLine:"Can I be gene
rically Christian and avoid all this churchy business?” \n\nThe U.S. Rel
igious Landscape Survey by the Pew Research Center’s Forum in Religion &
Public Life has found that one out of every 10 Americans is an ex-Catho
lic. If they were in a separate denomination\, they would be the third
largest religious group in the USA after Catholics and Baptists. One of
three people who were raised Catholic no longer identifies as Catholic.
This fact demands thoughtful consideration.\n\n\nThese meetings will b
e an opportunity for Catholic and formerly Catholic people to:\n\n+ Hear
a succinct explanation of what the Church teaches about the matter at h
and\;\n+ Voice their own concerns\; and\n+ Enter into dialogue with othe
rs who may share their concerns.\n\nThe approach will be conversational
with the goal of promoting understanding and healing.\n\nArea priests wi
ll be invited as listeners and\, should they be asked\, to respond. The
y will also be individually available for the sacrament of reconciliatio
n for those who seek that encounter.
