Steven Peterson: Why Democracy is so Difficult

Mitchell Auditorium
Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 7:30pm

No ticket orders or reservations necessary

Summary: Steven Peterson argues that humans are social primates with an innate tendency for hierarchical and authoritarian social and political structures and that democracy requires very special “enabling conditions” before it can be supported by a state—conditions that require decades to evolve. As a result, attempts to export democracy through nation-building to states without these enabling conditions are doomed to failure., Peterson is director of the School of Public Affairs and professor of Politics and Public Affairs at Penn State Harrisburg. He has authored or co-authored 20 books, among which are Darwinism, Dominance, and Democracy; The Failure of Democratic Nation Building; Political Behavior: Patterns in Everyday Life and more than 100 publications. He has served as president of the New York State Political Science Association and the Northeastern Political Science Association.
Re-Examining What It Means to be Antillean in Maryse Condé’s Literature for Children with Jill Gaeta, Assistant Professor of French/Global, Cultural and Language Studies

Tower Hall 4119
Friday, February 17, 2012, 3:40 – 4:40pm

Summary: The social and political complexity of the French Antillean islands, a result of slavery, colonization, and departmentalization, has lead to an equally complex sense of self among Antillean peoples. Positioned culturally between Africa and France, belonging to both and yet to neither, Antilleans face a daunting task in defining an individual and collective identity. However, over the past twenty years a body of children’s literature written by and for Antilleans has emerged, suggesting through its textual and visual content an attempt to address the issue of identity at a formative level. Many texts appear to promote in some way Antillean solidarity through their depictions of black heroes, Caribbean geographical contexts, and historical representations. Establishing pride in one’s antillanité while guiding readers away from the self-hatred that has so often resulted from French hegemony is an undeniably important process. However, as Guadeloupean author Maryse Condé points out, this solidarity remains a myth so long as Antillean children perpetuate the same attitude as the colonizers toward the Other. This talk will focus on how, through her literature, Condé seeks to encourage an identity not restricted by insular views of the Antilles but rather one that is enhanced by an appreciation for the diverse world they belong to. We will examine how Condé advocates a balance between a strong sense of Antillean selfhood and the recognition of a broader, more human solidarity., This free monthly lecture series was developed in 2007 by the College's School of Arts and Letters to highlight diverse faculty research projects. The presentations include a 40-minute lecture followed by 20 minutes of questions and answers. Refreshments are served. All colloquia are held from 3:40 to 4:40 p.m. in Tower Hall, room 4119.
Is this event open to
the public?: Yes
Cost: Free, open to the public
Contact: Spotlight Box Office
Contact Email: spotlight@css.edu
Contact Phone: (218) 723-7000 or (877) 263-9596

Iph… A modern retelling of Euripedes’ Iphegenia in Aulis

In order to placate the gods and end the doldrums, Agamemnon is pressured by his brother, Menaleus (Helen’s husband), to sacrifice his oldest daughter, Iphegenia. Vainglory, familial loyalty, patriotism and sacrifice collide at the brink of a conflict few of them fully understand. A chorus of vigorous and lusty young women lend commentary on the action and the characters.
Is this event open to
the public?: Yes
Cost: $10 adults, $8 seniors/non-CSS students, $5 CSS students
Contact: Spotlight Box Office
Contact Email: spotlight@css.edu
Contact Phone: (218) 723-7000 or (877) 263-9596

What Do Alienated Catholics Think About: "Why Should I Worship if the Church's Politics Offend Me?"

Somers Lounge
Monday, February 20, 2012, 7pm

Tickets are not required, but RSVP is requested.

Summary: “Why should I worship if the Church’s politics offend me?” The U.S. Religious Landscape Survey by the Pew Research Center’s Forum in Religion & Public Life has found that one out of every 10 Americans is an ex-Catholic. If they were in a separate denomination, they would be the third largest religious group in the USA after Catholics and Baptists. One of three people who were raised Catholic no longer identifies as Catholic. This fact demands thoughtful consideration., These meetings will be an opportunity for Catholic and formerly Catholic people to:, + Hear a succinct explanation of what the Church teaches about the matter at hand;, + Voice their own concerns; and, + Enter into dialogue with others who may share their concerns., The approach will be conversational with the goal of promoting understanding and healing., Area priests will be invited as listeners and, should they be asked, to respond. They will also be individually available for the sacrament of reconciliation for those who seek that encounter.
Is this event open to
the public?: Yes
Cost: Free
Contact: Barb LeGarde
Contact Email: 218-733-2287
Contact Phone: blegarde@css.edu

Martha Nussbaum: Why Democracy Needs the Humanities

Mitchell Auditorium
Thursday, February 23, 2012, 7:30pm

No ticket orders or reservations necessary

Summary: Martha Nussbaum believes that Americans increasingly treat education as though its primary goal were to teach students to be economically productive rather than to think critically and become knowledgeable and empathetic citizens. She argues that this focus on profitable skills has eroded our ability to criticize authority, reduced our sympathy with the marginalized and different, and damaged our competence to deal with complex global problems. The loss of these basic capacities jeopardizes the health of democracies and the hope of a decent world., Nussbaum is the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics in the Philosophy Department, Law School and Divinity School at the University of Chicago.
What Do Alienated Catholics Think About: "Why Should I Be Catholic if I am Divorced and Remarried and the Church Doesn't Seem to Want Me?"

Somers Lounge
Monday, February 27, 2012, 7pm

Tickets are not required, but RSVP is requested.

Summary: "Why should I be Catholic if I am divorced and remarried and the Church doesn't seem to want me?", The U.S.

He has spent more than 20 years in both business and technology domains and particularly spent over 10 years in the data warehouse and business intelligence field.
What Do Alienated Catholics Think About: "Can I Be Generically Christian and Avoid All This Churchy Business?”

Somers Lounge
Monday, March 5, 2012, 7pm

Tickets are not required, but RSVP is requested.

Summary: "Can I be generically Christian and avoid all this churchy business?” The U.S.
