“Training for Transition” - Transition Charlottesville-Albemarle workshop

Public introductory talk to Transition on Friday night from 7:00 to 9:00 PM for those who cannot make it for the weekend. The full Training for Transition course starts at 9:00 AM Saturday. Donations for the Friday night talk are gratefully received.
Full event hours are Friday evening 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Saturday 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM, and Sunday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

This two-day course is an in-depth experiential introduction to Transition for those considering bringing Transition to their community or for existing Transition initiatives who are interested in deepening their understanding of Transition. It is recommended for local communities wishing to become an internationally-recognized Transition Initiative.

At the Training for Transition course, you will:

Explore how the Transition process increases community resilience.
Receive tools for community outreach, education and engagement.
Learn how to summarize the triple challenge of Peak Oil, climate change, and economic instability in ways that move people to positive action.
Understand and know how to work with obstacles that have prevented our communities from recognizing and positively responding to the challenge of energy transition.
Experience ways that local social and economic community can be created and strengthened.
Learn ways of creating a positive, shared vision for your community’s future.
Receive support for becoming a Transition catalyst in your community.
Connect with others who are helping your region transition to greater stability and security.
Become a part of a rapidly growing positive, inspirational, global movement!

Curriculum:
The course describes how to catalyze, build and facilitate a successful Transition initiative. It is packed with imaginative and inspiring ways to engage your community, and delves into both the theory and practice of Transition that has worked so well in hundreds of communities around the world.

Who should attend:
People interested in learning about the Transition movement in greater depth and leaders already creating a Transition initiative in their community.

Belmont Bridge design competition - Open house for UVA entries

Project Gait-Way is a citizen-driven design competition for Charlottesville's Belmont Bridge replacement project.

The University of Virginia School of Architecture has 29 teams submitting entries which will be unveiled at the Music Resource Center on Saturday, February 11 from 3-5 PM.

All entries, including those from UVA, will be on display at City Space during February 13-19. A panel of judges will select winners at an event on Sunday, February 19 at City Space at 8PM.

James River Green Building council luncheon: eco MOD and Affordable Housing

Join the JRGBC in Charlottesville on February 14th for our monthly free luncheon, featuring eco MOD and speaker John Quale! ecoMOD is a multi-year research and design / build / evaluate project at the School of Architecture, in partnership with the UVA School of Engineering and Applied Science. Interdisciplinary ecoMOD teams create sustainable, prefabricated housing units for affordable housing organizations. Thus far, ecoMOD has created six affordable housing units for Habitat for Humanity and Piedmont Housing Alliance, and ecoREMOD has renovated three housing units for the City of Charlottesville, and Falmouth Heritage Renewal in Falmouth, Jamaica.

Through a recent $2.45 million grant, ecoMOD is partnering with affordable housing organizations in Southside and Southwestern Virginia to create a total of four new high performance housing units for Southside Outreach and People Incorporated. The goal is to use the opportunity to support economic development by helping the Southside industrialized housing companies to gear up to provide ecoMOD and similar housing throughout the region. The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission has provided the funding.

Mr. Quale will talk about both the ecoMOD and ecoREMOD projects, recent ecoMOD4 Project for Habitat for Humanity, as well as ecoREMOD1 in Charlottesville and ecoREMOD2 in Falmouth, Jamaica. John will also talk about his grant with the Tobacco Indemnification Commission to commercialize an ecoMOD design for affordable housing organizations in Southside and Southwestern VA, and an emerging multi-year project with AHIP.

John Quale is an Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Virginia, and teaches architectural design studios, design / build studios, and building technology courses. He serves as Director of the Graduate Architecture Program. He was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Tokyo, Japan and the Thomas Jefferson Fellow at Downing College, Cambridge University, U.K. John is a LEED Accredited Professional of the U.S. Green Building Council, and his research interests include ecological and climate responsive design and environmental criteria. In 2007, he was elected to the Board of Directors for the Virginia Sustainable Building Network. He was spoken nationally and internationally.

This luncheon will be held on February 14th at City Space, 100 5th St. NE, on the Downtown Mall, Charlottesville, VA. Doors open at 11:50 and the Seminar begins at approximately 12:10 pm.

Luncheons are free and open to the public; however, advance registration is required by Friday, February 10th. Lunches are ordered based on pre-registration, so please RSVP by the deadline and cancel your registration if you can’t attend before the deadline.
