National Cultural Heritage Moot Court Competition

Everett McKinley Dirksen U.S. Courthouse
219 S Dearborn St
Chicago, IL 60603
Friday, February 24, 2pm – Saturday, February 25, 2012, 2am

Contact Name: Vadim Shifrin
Contact Email: vshifrin@depaul.edu
Continuing Legal Education: Yes
Event Sub-Title: Moot Court
Speakers: The Competition Board is pleased to announce that Judge Mary L. Mikva of the Circuit Court of Cook County will join Judge Diane P. Wood of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit as members of the esteemed panel judging the final round of the Competition!
Description: The 2012 Moot Court Competition problem will address two issues concerning the Theft of Major Artwork Act (18 U.S.C. § 668). The first focuses on Congress' Article I, Section 8 authority to regulate interstate commerce and the second on statutory interpretation of the Act. Oral arguments for the 2012 Competition will be held on February 24th and 25th at the Everett McKinley Dirksen U.S. Courthouse in Chicago., Registration for the 2012 Competition is now closed., Cultural heritage law deals with our most prized possessions and often spans beyond national borders, and, inevitably, has become the subject of often contentious legal debates and policies. This dynamic and growing legal field deals with the issues that arise as our society comes to appreciate the important symbolic, historical and emotional role that cultural heritage plays in our lives. It encompasses several disparate areas: protection of archaeological sites; preservation of historic structures and the built environment; preservation of and respect for both the tangible and intangible indigenous cultural heritage; the international market in art works and antiquities; and recovery of stolen art works., If you are interested in helping to Judge the competition please contact Vadim Shifrin at vshifrin@depaul.edu
Primary Sponsor: Center for Art Museum & Cultural Heritage Law
Other Sponsor(s): Moot Court Society
More info: www.law.depaul.edu…

How individuals and societies respond to such catastrophes tells us a great deal about the disasters themselves, but also quite a bit about the world views, cultural constructs, religious orientations, and social and political structures of those affected. In this presentation, Dr. Bell traces Jewish and Christian responses to natural disasters by examining several cases of natural disasters throughout history. He discusses the religious reactions and practical responses of Jews and Christians to these events, providing a unique and important lens for understanding Jewish and Christian society and the interaction of Jews and Christians throughout history.
Primary Sponsor: Center for Jewish Law & Judaic Studies
Other Sponsor(s): Co-Sponsored with University Ministry
More info: www.law.depaul.edu…

We hope to recruit 10 students for each event, with a preference given to 2L or part-time students, who do not have the opportunity to do an externship, but who could take advantage of a one-day opportunity to learn more about the court and network. Generally, students are asked to arrive at the courthouses between 8:30-8:45 a.m. Students should be able to stay until about 3:30 or 4 p.m. In the morning, they will shadow the judges. During a catered in lunch, the students will be able to talk to the judges on a more informal basis. Then in the afternoon, they will continue to shadow., We will be providing transportation from DePaul and back for those students who want it. Students interested in registering can contact me at ntaylor4@depaul.edu or (312) 362-8312. To get registered, students should provide their class level, part-time or full-time status, student identification number, and interest in transportation. If students are interested in a municipal division, they should also let me know if they prefer civil or criminal law. Students should not register unless they can commit to attending the event. Slots are available on a first come, first serve basis., For more information about the different courthouses and the types of cases they hear, please see www.cookcountycourt.net….
