Scituate Reservoir Watershed Public Field Tour

Providence Water property, Scituate, RI
Saturday, May 18, 2013, 9am – 12pm

For its first tour of the season, Providence Water will be leading a walk in the Field Hill area on the former Joslin family farm site on the west side of the Scituate Reservoir. We will discuss how the landscape has changed over the years and hike up a dirt road to reach the open hilltop grassland, which provides panoramic views looking east across the reservoir. After visiting the open fields, we will loop back through oak woodlands and pass a wetland where we may see signs of amphibian activity amidst the spring vegetation. Along the way, we will visit a historic cemetery and pass old foundations that provide clues to past land uses.

A highlight of the tour will be visiting the site of April’s prescribed fire, when about 20 acres of the fields were burned to maintain habitat for birds and other wildlife. We will be joined by Joel Carlson of Northeast Forest and Fire Management, the experienced “burn boss” who established the fire plan and directed a team of wildland firefighters in carrying it out. A biologist has also been invited to accompany us and talk about some of the different species that use the varied habitats in this landscape.

Reservations are required to join the field tour and can be made by registering online at the Providence Water website (www.provwater.com…) or by calling Forest Supervisor Christopher Riely at (401) 521-6300 x 7313. An email address or phone number for each participant group is required in case it is necessary to contact registrants with additional information regarding the event. Both adults and children are welcome, but no pets please. The length of the walk is approximately 2 miles over hilly terrain and participants should wear sturdy shoes and dress appropriately for being outdoors in spring weather.

We will meet at 9:00 AM on the west side of Tunk Hill Road (Route 12) at the gated entrance to Field Hill Road, 0.3 mile north of the intersection with Old Plainfield Pike and 2.2 miles south of the junction with Route 102. Participants will need to sign a liability release. In case of heavy rain, the field tour will be postponed to the same time the next day, Sunday, May 19. Registrants will be notified if the event is postponed with an email or phone call by 4 PM on Friday, May 17.

The public watershed lands near the Scituate Reservoir are closed to unauthorized access for water quality protection and security reasons.

Town/City (RI): Scituate
Categories: Conservation/Restoration, Creatures, Ecology/Natural History, Forests and Trees, Water
Organized by: Providence Water
Group Homepage: www.provwater.com
Contact: Christopher Riely, Forest Supervisor
Contact email: criely@provwater.com
Intended Audience: General, Adults, Children, College/University, Families, Homeowners, Landowners, Teachers, Teens, Visitors/Tourists
Animal Categories: Birds, Native
Water Categories: Reservoirs
Cost: FREE
Calendar By: www.whatgrowsonri.com
More info: www.provwater.com…
