The festivities will include: Opening Ceremonies with prayers, music and chanting; public viewing of the mandala as it is created; live video feed to the store’s Fifth Avenue window; programs on Tibetan culture; and Sunday Closing Ceremonies with a procession to the Hudson River. Using millions of grains of colored sand laid on a simple, flat wooden platform, the monks painstakingly create the mandala using traditional, prescribed spiritual iconography. While creating the mandala, the monks engage in continuous prayers and other spiritual practices to imbue the finished mandala with their highest spiritual intentions. This in turn permeates the atmosphere of the surrounding environment, re-consecrating the earth and its inhabitants. It is said to be a picture of enlightenment. The traditional culmination of a sand mandala is its destruction after completion and the ritual offering of its sands into a nearby river, lake or ocean. This symbolizes the Buddhist concept of the impermanence of all physical life. East West Living has requested that this mandala be dedicated to the physical, mental and spiritual healing of New Yorkers and all beings.
