Opening of filing period for late reports of pre-election campaign contributions and supplemental independent expenditures of $1,000 or more for local candidates, ballot measures and committees affiliated with the June 3 Statewide Direct Primary.

Filings must be made within 24 hours of receipt of the contribution or the expenditure and must be made via fax, guaranteed overnight mail or in-person delivery.

The period covered by the reports is May 18, 2008 through June 2, 2008.

Opening and processing of Vote by Mail ballots begins

Seven business days prior to the June 3 Statewide Direct Primary, the Elections Office begins opening and processing voted Vote by Mail ballots. The procedure is open to observation by the public.

Vote by Mail ballot envelopes will be opened, ballots will be removed, damaged ballots will be duplicated, optical scanners will be prepared for reading ballots and ballots will be machine-read. Vote counts will not be accessed or released until 8 p.m. on Election Day.

Deadline for the Elections Office to receive spoiled nonpartisan ballots via mail from Vote by Mail Decline to State voters who wish to vote a Democratic, Republican or American Independent party ballot for the June 3 Statewide Direct Primary Election. A postmark is not acceptable.

Ballot exchanges after May 27 will have to be made in person at the Elections Office or on Election Day at your polling place.

Nonpartisan ballots do not contain presidential candidates - only local measures and state propositions. Decline to State voters who vote at the polls will inform a poll worker of their ballot choice when they check in on Election Day.

If you become a new citizen of the United States or a new resident of San Mateo County after voter registration closes on May 19 but on or before May 27, the law offers a grace period for you to register and vote, with some restrictions.

If you become a citizen of the United States between May 20 and May 27, you may come to the Elections Office to register to vote and receive a Vote by Mail ballot for the June 3 Statewide Direct Primary. You must provide proof of citizenship and proof of residency in the county.

If you become a new resident of the county between May 20 and May 27, you may come to the Elections Office to register to vote and receive a new resident's ballot. You must complete your ballot at the Elections Office and are eligible to vote for presidential candidates only.

Deadline for the Elections Office to receive mail, fax or online requests from voters who wish to have a Vote by Mail ballot for the June 3 Statewide Direct Primary mailed to them. A postmark is not acceptable.

Voters may request to Vote by Mail for this election only or to become a permanent Vote by Mail voter for this election and all subsequent ones.

After May 27, all requests will have to be made in person at the Elections Office. Requests for Vote by Mail ballots can not be made earlier than May 5.

This is also the deadline for registered U.S. citizens living overseas and uniformed service members to request a Vote by Mail ballot via Federal Post Card Applications.

Official Canvass of the Vote begins

Offical Canvass of the Vote for the June 3 Statewide Direct Primary begins and continues for the 28 days following the election.

The Canvass includes processing ballots that weren't counted on Election Night, including Vote by Mail ballots received the day before or on Election Day, and provisional ballots. Ballot numbers and signatures on voter rosters are reconciled with the number of votes cast, and precinct supplies are inspected. A one percent manual recount of votes is also conducted to ensure the accuracy of the vote before certifying election results. The Canvass must begin no later than June 5, and closes on July 1.

The Canvass and the one percent manual recount are open to the public for observation.
