ECO Girls

ECO Girls is a project providing Environmental and Cultural Opportunities for Girls in urban Southeast Michigan. The project was founded in 2011 by a humanities professor who sought to connect a concern for the pressing environmental issues of our time with a desire to promote the positive development of girls in urban centers. The project especially aims to reach girls of color and girls in economically challenged areas whose neighborhoods too often become depositories for environmental waste but whose communities are left out of strategic planning for a future that will be affected by resource depletion and global climate change.

While engaging girls in a program of fun and exploration, ECO Girls applies an environmental humanities framework to link environmental issues to the cultural meanings of daily life. The project draws connections between the group histories, community values, and expressive cultures of girls and the environment we all share to foster ecological awareness and critical environmental thinking. By linking cultural life with planetary realities made evident by scientific studies, ECO Girls encourages social change for the betterment of our natural world and the future of all people within it. To help shape that change and provide an alternative to popular, consumption-oriented American girl culture, ECO Girls strives to create and encourage cultural production by and about girls that illustrates the interconnectedness of people and nature and reveals the worth, strength, and promise of every girl.

Participants in ECO Girls are divided into two groups based on age and grade level. The
“Roots” group Grades 2-3 (ages 7-9) meets on alternate Saturdays at the Ann Arbor YMCA during the school year (September-May). The
“Shoots” group Grades 4-6th (ages 10-12) meets at specified times during the school year, including an overnight Earth Day slumber party at the Leslie Science and Nature Center and a week-long summer camp on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor.
For special events and outings, the two groups meet together. Please consult the events calendar for details or contact us with questions.

ECO Girls is based in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. The project benefits from the collaboration of a passionate core organizing team made up of University of Michigan faculty, staff members, graduate students, and alumni; a dedicated advisory group of UM faculty and staff members and local environmental educators with expertise spanning multiple academic fields; and a collection of partnerships with supportive community organizations and campus units. Key community partners are: the YMCA Ann Arbor Childcare Program, the Leslie Science and Nature Center, and Growing Hope, all of which host designated ECO Girls events. Key campus partners include the Museum of Natural History, Trotter Multicultural Center, the Women in Science and Engineering Program (WISE), the Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning, and “It’s Great To Be A Girl!”

This is a class of exploration, problem-solving, and risk-taking with a goal of learning and experimenting how machines work and compete. Students will learn a variety of concepts throughout this class including the basic engineering principles, gearing and gear ratios, electric motors and energy, problem-solving, and communication skills. Get those engines running and head on over to Stars & Stripes for a high octane day of thrills and excitement. Join our Power Wheel Campers as they spend the week learning about cars: how to drive them, how to care for them and basic driver safety rules. Using battery operated Mattel Power Wheels, campers will have their very own car to use during camp and will learn basic racing & road safety rules. What an educational way to teach your child the dynamics of a car! All campers will design their own license plate and week long campers will receive their very own drivers license. Bring a bathing suit and towel for water activities on Friday.

Monday: How does this car Work?
At Power Wheels Camp each camper will get paired up with a friend to help take care of their car for the week. They will be in charge of cleaning their car, caring for their car and learning all about how a car functions. Where is the engine? What is a car frame? And why do we need a windshield anyway? There is so much learn about cars and what better way to learn then how to drive then on the Stars & Stripes driving course. We will earn our learners permit and understand the rules of the road. Tuesday: Signs on the Road?
Did you know that to drive a car in Michigan there are a lot of important rules that we need to know? Did you know that signs, signals, and sounds all help us in our driving adventures? Campers are going to learn about so many of the signs that we see on the road everyday and what they mean. We will also learn about some of those unfamiliar ones as well. Our Obstacle course will have many different signs that we have to obey or we risk getting a ticket by the Stars & Stripes police. We will be having a driving course test and upon successful completion each camper will receive their official Camp Kids drivers license.

Wednesday: How’s my Driving?
As our courses get a little trickier, our signs are changing, are there are so many new activities coming to camp. What better way to start out camp then to hear about the rules of the road from someone who knows those rules the best: Policemen and women work hard each and every day to help keep all of us safe. Safety on the road is important and we are going to learn different ways to keep ourselves and our friend’s safe on the Stars & Stripes driving course. Get ready to learn, drive, and explore when we take our cars out for a little off roading.

Thursday: NASCAR Alert!!
There are fast cars and then there are FAST cars!! Today at Power Wheels Camp we are going to learn all about FAST cars and we are going to be setting up our very own NASCAR race track. Trophies and awards will be awarded to all of our participants. Car drivers will also have the opportunity to make a hot wheels track along with their power wheels track and speed away on a race car adventure. We will create our own track that you can take home and your very own hot wheels car too.

Friday: NASCAR and Water Fun!!
What better way to end a fun week at camp than ride our power wheels around the track and take a dip in the water. Get those engines running and head on over to Stars & Stripes for a high octane day of thrills and excitement. Join our Power Wheel Campers as they spend the week learning about cars: how to drive them, how to care for them and basic driver safety rules. Using battery operated Mattel Power Wheels, campers will have their very own car to use during camp and will learn basic racing & road safety rules. What an educational way to teach your child the dynamics of a car! All campers will design their own license plate and week long campers will receive their very own drivers license. Bring a bathing suit and towel for water activities on Friday.

Monday: How does this car Work?
At Power Wheels Camp each camper will get paired up with a friend to help take care of their car for the week. They will be in charge of cleaning their car, caring for their car and learning all about how a car functions. Where is the engine? What is a car frame? And why do we need a windshield anyway? There is so much learn about cars and what better way to learn then how to drive then on the Stars & Stripes driving course. We will earn our learners permit and understand the rules of the road. Tuesday: Signs on the Road?
Did you know that to drive a car in Michigan there are a lot of important rules that we need to know? Did you know that signs, signals, and sounds all help us in our driving adventures? Campers are going to learn about so many of the signs that we see on the road everyday and what they mean. We will also learn about some of those unfamiliar ones as well. Our Obstacle course will have many different signs that we have to obey or we risk getting a ticket by the Stars & Stripes police. We will be having a driving course test and upon successful completion each camper will receive their official Camp Kids drivers license.

Wednesday: How’s my Driving?
As our courses get a little trickier, our signs are changing, are there are so many new activities coming to camp. What better way to start out camp then to hear about the rules of the road from someone who knows those rules the best: Policemen and women work hard each and every day to help keep all of us safe. Safety on the road is important and we are going to learn different ways to keep ourselves and our friend’s safe on the Stars & Stripes driving course. Get ready to learn, drive, and explore when we take our cars out for a little off roading.

Thursday: NASCAR Alert!!
There are fast cars and then there are FAST cars!! Today at Power Wheels Camp we are going to learn all about FAST cars and we are going to be setting up our very own NASCAR race track. Trophies and awards will be awarded to all of our participants. Car drivers will also have the opportunity to make a hot wheels track along with their power wheels track and speed away on a race car adventure. We will create our own track that you can take home and your very own hot wheels car too.

Friday: NASCAR and Water Fun!!
What better way to end a fun week at camp than ride our power wheels around the track and take a dip in the water. Get those engines running and head on over to Stars & Stripes for a high octane day of thrills and excitement. Join our Power Wheel Campers as they spend the week learning about cars: how to drive them, how to care for them and basic driver safety rules. Using battery operated Mattel Power Wheels, campers will have their very own car to use during camp and will learn basic racing & road safety rules. What an educational way to teach your child the dynamics of a car! All campers will design their own license plate and week long campers will receive their very own drivers license. Bring a bathing suit and towel for water activities on Friday.

Monday: How does this car Work?
At Power Wheels Camp each camper will get paired up with a friend to help take care of their car for the week. They will be in charge of cleaning their car, caring for their car and learning all about how a car functions. Where is the engine? What is a car frame? And why do we need a windshield anyway? There is so much learn about cars and what better way to learn then how to drive then on the Stars & Stripes driving course. We will earn our learners permit and understand the rules of the road. Tuesday: Signs on the Road?
Did you know that to drive a car in Michigan there are a lot of important rules that we need to know? Did you know that signs, signals, and sounds all help us in our driving adventures? Campers are going to learn about so many of the signs that we see on the road everyday and what they mean. We will also learn about some of those unfamiliar ones as well. Our Obstacle course will have many different signs that we have to obey or we risk getting a ticket by the Stars & Stripes police. We will be having a driving course test and upon successful completion each camper will receive their official Camp Kids drivers license.

Wednesday: How’s my Driving?
As our courses get a little trickier, our signs are changing, are there are so many new activities coming to camp. What better way to start out camp then to hear about the rules of the road from someone who knows those rules the best: Policemen and women work hard each and every day to help keep all of us safe. Safety on the road is important and we are going to learn different ways to keep ourselves and our friend’s safe on the Stars & Stripes driving course. Get ready to learn, drive, and explore when we take our cars out for a little off roading.

Thursday: NASCAR Alert!!
There are fast cars and then there are FAST cars!! Today at Power Wheels Camp we are going to learn all about FAST cars and we are going to be setting up our very own NASCAR race track. Trophies and awards will be awarded to all of our participants. Car drivers will also have the opportunity to make a hot wheels track along with their power wheels track and speed away on a race car adventure. We will create our own track that you can take home and your very own hot wheels car too.

Friday: NASCAR and Water Fun!!
What better way to end a fun week at camp than ride our power wheels around the track and take a dip in the water. We will wash our cars, have a balloon car race, and jump in the water for a rockin good time. Wow cars, courses, tracks, fun, water, and balloons life is good and camp is great. We will be creating our very own race car camp shirts. Let’s roll!!

Get those engines running and head on over to Stars & Stripes for a high octane day of thrills and excitement. Join our Power Wheel Campers as they spend the week learning about cars: how to drive them, how to care for them and basic driver safety rules. Using battery operated Mattel Power Wheels, campers will have their very own car to use during camp and will learn basic racing & road safety rules. What an educational way to teach your child the dynamics of a car! All campers will design their own license plate and week long campers will receive their very own drivers license. Bring a bathing suit and towel for water activities on Friday.

Monday: How does this car Work?
At Power Wheels Camp each camper will get paired up with a friend to help take care of their car for the week. They will be in charge of cleaning their car, caring for their car and learning all about how a car functions. Where is the engine? What is a car frame? And why do we need a windshield anyway? There is so much learn about cars and what better way to learn then how to drive then on the Stars & Stripes driving course. We will earn our learners permit and understand the rules of the road. Tuesday: Signs on the Road?
Did you know that to drive a car in Michigan there are a lot of important rules that we need to know? Did you know that signs, signals, and sounds all help us in our driving adventures? Campers are going to learn about so many of the signs that we see on the road everyday and what they mean. We will also learn about some of those unfamiliar ones as well. Our Obstacle course will have many different signs that we have to obey or we risk getting a ticket by the Stars & Stripes police. We will be having a driving course test and upon successful completion each camper will receive their official Camp Kids drivers license.

Wednesday: How’s my Driving?
As our courses get a little trickier, our signs are changing, are there are so many new activities coming to camp. What better way to start out camp then to hear about the rules of the road from someone who knows those rules the best: Policemen and women work hard each and every day to help keep all of us safe. Safety on the road is important and we are going to learn different ways to keep ourselves and our friend’s safe on the Stars & Stripes driving course. Get ready to learn, drive, and explore when we take our cars out for a little off roading.

Thursday: NASCAR Alert!!
There are fast cars and then there are FAST cars!! Today at Power Wheels Camp we are going to learn all about FAST cars and we are going to be setting up our very own NASCAR race track. Trophies and awards will be awarded to all of our participants. Car drivers will also have the opportunity to make a hot wheels track along with their power wheels track and speed away on a race car adventure. We will create our own track that you can take home and your very own hot wheels car too.

Friday: NASCAR and Water Fun!!
What better way to end a fun week at camp than ride our power wheels around the track and take a dip in the water. We will wash our cars, have a balloon car race, and jump in the water for a rockin good time. Wow cars, courses, tracks, fun, water, and balloons life is good and camp is great. We will be creating our very own race car camp shirts. Let’s roll!!

Join our Power Wheel Campers as they spend the week learning about cars: how to drive them, how to care for them and basic driver safety rules. Using battery operated Mattel Power Wheels, campers will have their very own car to use during camp and will learn basic racing & road safety rules. What an educational way to teach your child the dynamics of a car! All campers will design their own license plate and week long campers will receive their very own drivers license. Monday: How does this car Work?
At Power Wheels Camp each camper will get paired up with a friend to help take care of their car for the week. They will be in charge of cleaning their car, caring for their car and learning all about how a car functions. Where is the engine? What is a car frame? And why do we need a windshield anyway? There is so much learn about cars and what better way to learn then how to drive then on the Stars & Stripes driving course. We will earn our learners permit and understand the rules of the road. Tuesday: Signs on the Road?
Did you know that to drive a car in Michigan there are a lot of important rules that we need to know? Did you know that signs, signals, and sounds all help us in our driving adventures? Campers are going to learn about so many of the signs that we see on the road everyday and what they mean. We will also learn about some of those unfamiliar ones as well. Our Obstacle course will have many different signs that we have to obey or we risk getting a ticket by the Stars & Stripes police. We will be having a driving course test and upon successful completion each camper will receive their official Camp Kids drivers license.

Wednesday: How’s my Driving?
As our courses get a little trickier, our signs are changing, are there are so many new activities coming to camp. What better way to start out camp then to hear about the rules of the road from someone who knows those rules the best: Policemen and women work hard each and every day to help keep all of us safe. Safety on the road is important and we are going to learn different ways to keep ourselves and our friend’s safe on the Stars & Stripes driving course. Get ready to learn, drive, and explore when we take our cars out for a little off roading.

Thursday: NASCAR Alert!!
There are fast cars and then there are FAST cars!! Today at Power Wheels Camp we are going to learn all about FAST cars and we are going to be setting up our very own NASCAR race track. Trophies and awards will be awarded to all of our participants. Car drivers will also have the opportunity to make a hot wheels track along with their power wheels track and speed away on a race car adventure. We will create our own track that you can take home and your very own hot wheels car too.

Friday: NASCAR and Water Fun!!
What better way to end a fun week at camp than ride our power wheels around the track and take a dip in the water. We will wash our cars, have a balloon car race, and jump in the water for a rockin good time. Wow cars, courses, tracks, fun, water, and balloons life is good and camp is great. We will be creating our very own race car camp shirts. Let’s roll!!

RobotC for Girls - summer program

RobotC for Girls is a one-week, day program for students who will complete grades 8-12 in June 2013.

The camp introduces students to computer programming in a fun and supportive environment. RobotC for Girls campers will program Lego Mindstorm robots using RobotC programming language. This is the language that many high school FIRST Robotics Competition teams use. UM's Engineering 101, a required course for engineering students, uses C++ which is quite similar to C. The number of campers is limited to 20.

The camp is planned and taught by University of Michigan faculty, staff and students. In addition to hands-on activities, campers will participate in fun group competitions, will tour dynamic UM labs, Google, and the UM campus and will talk with UM students in science and engineering majors.

Our campers are chaperoned by WISE camp staff at all times.

RobotC for Girls is sponsored by the University of Michigan, Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program and by Google.

RobotC will be held on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor, June 17 - 21, 2013.

GRASP is a guided, at-home program that helps students (Grades K-8) stay on top of math and language skills over the summer. The Language Arts program includes reading, spelling, grammar, and phonics. The Math program includes basic math functions, fractions, ercents, graphs, geometry, and much more. Whether you are home for the summer or on the road, this flexible program goes with you. This proven program has hown great success in helping students retain critical skills.

GRASP consists of nine fun, easy-to-use lessons. Complete one lesson a week and mail back to the teacher consultants who review, score, and send them back to you. For placement, your child’s classroom teacher is to recommend the appropriate learning level on the registration form. (This is often different from the grade level).

Since 1995, the NMC University Center established a unique, collaborative, partnership between Northwestern Michigan College and senior, established, universities located throughout the state of Michigan, offering select certificate-completions, bachelor, graduate, and doctorate degrees, as well as endorsement programs. Students attending the University Center can complete both four-year degrees, and advanced degrees, without leaving northwestern Michigan. They can fulfill their educational goals without leaving their jobs, families, or communities.

Free day long program that focuses on safety and prevention techniques for children ages 9-11. We partner with community agencies such as Consumers Power, Safe Kids Coalition, local Police, Fire and Sheriff Departments to give a variety of experiences. Camp 911 is a fun, hands-on learning environment that gives children the knowledge, skills and confidence to protect themselves and react safely in emergency situations. Lunch and snacks provided.
