4MBS Festival of Classics

Celebrating its 20th year, the 4MBS Festival of Classics has become a Brisbane musical tradition, uniting Brisbane’s finest choirs, orchestras, ensembles and soloists for performances of the great classics.

The festival will also mark the 200th birthdays of Verdi and Wagner, including a specially-commissioned theatrical presentation by Eugene Gilfedder about Richard Wagner and the Ring Cycle, as well as a celebratory performance of the magnificent Verdi Requiem on Sunday 26 May.

Major highlights in the 20-event festival include:
• one of the favourite pieces of all time, Carmina Burana, performed
by The Queensland Choir
• performances of 20 beloved Beethoven piano works by leading Brisbane pianists in the Queensland Conservatorium
• the popular Brisbane Philharmonic Mother’s Day Concert
• concerts by the Lipman Harp Duo, the Queensland Wind and Brass,
the Queensland Youth Orchestra, the St Lucia Orchestra and the
Queensland Symphony Orchestra
• Saints and Sinners – Verdi’s Women!
• a special Medici concert by 4MBS patron and pianist Roger

Music features strongly once again as a key generator of emotions and the opening concert event of Italian Week celebrates Giuseppe Verdi’s 200th anniversary with Verdi’s Requiem will see over 200 performers onstage and will feature Australia’s tenor Rosario La Spina in Brisbane’s newly refurbished City Hall and conducted by Antoni Bonetti.

Guided nature walk in Boondall Wetlands

Light Fantastic: Expo

For some there are two Brisbanes – the one before World Expo ‘88 and the one that emerged after. The enduring legacy of Expo ‘88 was not what the world saw of Brisbane, but what we saw of ourselves.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of this landmark event, Light Fantastic: Expo ‘88 Parades Rewired will take visitors back in time to rediscover the magic of the Lunchtime and the Qantas Light Fantastic Parades that mesmerised crowds every day.

Unlike anything ever seen in Australia before, creating the parades was an intensive process. The resulting joy for thousands of visitors only hints at the enormous energy and collaboration needed to bring the ideas to life.

Panoramas

Among the countless images taken since the introduction of photography to Australia in the 1860s, panoramas contain something special. Beyond the landscape, the photographs give an insight into life at different times in our city’s history when roads were rudimentary, horses gave way to early vehicles, and City Hall once towered over all.

Providing a fascinating insight into life in Brisbane over a 150 year span, the exhibition tracks Brisbane’s growth from a modest town nestled in the river’s curves to the modern city we know today.

Valley Markets Music

Angharad Drake is a 19-year-old singer-songwriter from the Sunshine Coast. A student of music, she has been writing and performing her original folk songs for nearly six years. Writing from the experiences of life, her thoughts and feelings are expressed beautifully through her music. Now based in Brisbane, the rising talent has played extensively in local venues, including The Globe, The Zoo, Black Bear Lodge, The Powerhouse, and Queen St as part of their QSM Live effort. Angharad was also part of Caloundra Music Festival 2011.

Light Fantastic: Expo
