Central Market Hatch Chile Festival

HATCH IT IF YOU CAN!
Central Market Turns Up the Heat at 13th Annual Hatch Chile Festival

Hatch the Perfect Tailgate Party
It may be August, but football season is just around the corner, and Austin sports fans are ready to tailgate! Central Market has a surefire way to spice up any tailgate party! The first shipment of the famous, authentic Hatch chile peppers from Hatch, New Mexico are arriving at Central Market stores, just in time for football season.

During Central Market’s Hatch Festival, August 22-24 and August 29-31, football fans can stop by on the way to the game for Hatch hamburgers and sausage. Just look for our CM Chefs, cooking on grills in front of both Austin locations. And don’t forget the ultimate tailgate staples – Hatch tortilla chips and Hatch salsa! Throughout both weekends of the festival, Central Market is mixing chiles into everything their chefs can think of, providing guests with dozens of options to add these prized chiles to their tailgate party refreshments.

Heat up the Competition
Central Market invites guests to share their Hatch creativity in the 2nd annual “No-Holds-Barred Hatch Chile Pepper Recipe Contest.” No matter how wacky the recipe may be, if guests can cook it, they can enter it! Central Market will narrow the entries to a “Final Chile Five” for each store location, and these chile connoisseurs will compete in a taste-off. Try to top last year’s winning recipes: “Gasp-Hatch-O” and “Apple Hatch Bison Meatballs with Smokey Hatch Blue Corn Grits.”

The big winner at each store will be declared the Hatch Ruler, crowned with a chile wreath and awarded a $500 Central Market gift card plus a year’s supply (52 pounds!) of roasted Hatch chiles. Entry forms and complete contest rules are available at both Austin locations. The deadline for entries is Saturday, August 23.

School of Hatch
But wait, what about dessert? Guests can stop by the CM Cooking School and learn how to easily incorporate Hatch chiles into their favorite desserts. The Cooking School at North Lamar welcomes Karen Cassady to lead the hands-on class “Hatch Chiles: Just Desserts.”

Cassady will encourage guests to expand their dessert menus to include hot and spicy Hatch chiles. With an emphasis on proper technique and complementary flavors, guests will learn to make Scones with Hatched Tamarind-Applebutter, Apricot-Goat Cheese Tartlets with Chiles-in-the-Crust, Bon-Bons with Caramel Hatch Ice Cream, and Chocolate Wafers with Slow Burn Ganache. The class, which costs $55 per person, is on Friday, August 22 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

When:
Central Market’s Hatch Chile Festival is August 22-24 and August 29-31.

Where:
Central Market, 4477 South Lamar, Austin, TX 78745, 512.899.4300

Central Market, 4001 North Lamar, Austin, TX 78756, 512.206.1000

About Central Market:
Central Market’s 75,000 square foot serpentine-flow, full view European-style layout created a completely new food shopping experience—never before offered with such entertainment and excitement.
Austin Heritage Hunt

The Heritage Society of Austin invites middle school age students to participate in and complete a “Heritage Hunt” to learn about the history and culture of Austin .

The Heritage Society launched the popular Heritage Hunt program last year. Middle school age students can undertake four different self-guided hunts that explore the Lamar Area, Barton Springs Area, East Austin and The University of Texas Campus. Participants visit some of the most interesting historic and cultural sites of our city to seek out the answers to the hunt questions. Who fought in the Pig War in 1841? Where are Bigfoot Wallace and Thomas “Peg Leg” Ward buried? What is in a Sissy Burger at Dirty Martin’s? Young sleuths who uncover the answers to these and other intriguing questions are invited to receive a certificate as an official Heritage Hunter, provided by the Heritage Society.

Kids who have completed the Heritage Hunt are invited to attend the City Council meeting on October 2nd to be recognized by Mayor Will Wynn and hear the Heritage Hunt Proclamation announced. A reception will follow where participants will receive their Heritage Hunt certificates and meet the Mayor or a City Council member.

Heritage Hunts can be found at www.heritagesocietyaustin.org…

Aztec and Maya Revival

The Aztec and Maya revival style refers to a resurgence of Pre-Columbian motifs and patterns in Mexico's modern arts. In the late 19th century, Mexico began to embrace its Pre-Columbian past and indigenous roots. Mexico developed a new style of art by appropriating the iconography of many of its Pre-Columbian ancestral groups, including but not limited to the Aztec and Maya cultures.

The Aztec and Maya Revival exhibition illustrates this fusion of Pre-Columbian visual patterns with modern Mexican material culture. As part of the exhibition, the Aztec Mummy Collection (1957-1958), a trilogy of vintage Mexican horror films, is showing in the Back Gallery.
