Historians agree that placing artillery on the hills of the Dorchester peninsula was decisive in forcing the British military to evacuate Boston on March 17, 1776. But why had it taken so long for either army to seize that high ground? What was General Washington`s role in setting strategy? And what other factors were important in the end of the siege?

Presented in the historic Longfellow Carriage House by Dr. Robert Cameron Mitchell, Professor Emeritus, Clark University.

RSVP required.
Colonial Embroideries of Boston

A talk by Pamela Parmal, David and Roberta Logie Curator of Textile and Fashion Arts at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

When the English colonists arrived in the New World, they brought with them their customs and local traditions. Among the most important were education and an abhorrence of idleness. Young girls trained in the needle arts so that their hands were not idle and they could become productive members of the household. This talk will explore how English embroidery traditions influenced those of New England and how they evolved during the colonial period. Also addressed will be the role of needlework in women's lives, both as artistic expression and as a commercial endeavor.

This special program will be followed by a reception and dinner with the speaker at a home on Beacon Hill.
Seating for the dinner is limited.

Reservations are strongly recommended, and will be held upon receipt of payment. Call the Nichols House Museum at 617-227-6993.

RSVP by March 26th
