DESCRIPTION:This remarkable showcase of shorts made between 1962 and 198
7 reveals Tezuka’s energy\, originality\, and clarity of vision as he em
ploys music and imagery to render dialogue unnecessary. These films show
Tezuka the art house animator at his inventive best. [Descriptions adap
ted from text by Helen McCarthy for <em>Movies into Manga: Osamu Tezuka<
/em>\, shown at Barbican Film\, Barbican Centre\, London\, in September
2008.]\n\n<em>Tales of the Street Corner</em> \nDrawing apparently unrel
ated elements towards a single tragic climax\, <em>Tales of the Street C
orner</em> is profoundly anti-war and is the first film from Tezuka’s Mu
 shi Productions.\nJapan / 1962 / 38 min. \n\n<em>Mermaid</em> \nTrouble
d by increasing conformity imposed by Japanese society\, Tezuka examines
the power of dreams and the consequences of betraying them. \nJapan / 1
 964 / 9 min. / video\n\n<em>Drop</em> \nIn this highly personal film\, e
ven the simple backgrounds are drawn by Tezuka. A thirsty man on a raft
tries desperately (and fruitlessly) to get a precious drop of water. \nJ
 apan / 1965 / 4 min. / video\n\n<em>Pictures at an Exhibition</em> \nOpe
 ning with a literal\, live-action walk into a gallery\, Mussorgsky’s mus
ic becomes a jumping-off point for a series of ten visually distinct and
  stylish segments. \nJapan / 1966 / 39 min. / video\n\n<em>Jumping </em>
\nOne of the most technically dazzling achievements of its day\, <em>Jum
ping</em> was shot in a single cut with 4\,000 images showing a skipping
boy gradually striding higher and higher until he leaps across war-torn
  countries\, looking down on human activity like a god. \nJapan / 1984 /
6 min.\n\n<em>Broken Down Film </em>\nA heroic cowboy fights not only a
conventional villain but also a film so old that it breaks down. Tezuka
’s affection for the conventions of silent film fills every frame. \nJap
 an / 1985 / 6 min. \n\n<em>Push </em>\nIn a world where every necessity
can be had from vending machines\, a man goes to see his creator and dem
ands to be shown where to buy a brand new Earth. \nJapan / 1987 /4 min.
/ video\n\n<em>Muramasa </em>\nA magic sword is found stuck into a straw
figure. The samurai who finds it keeps cutting at more straw figures to
test its sharpness\; but every time he slashes one apart\, it turns int
 o a human being. \nJapan / 1987 / 9 min. / video\n\n<em>Legend of the Fo
rest </em>\nTezuka planned to review the history of animation in four ep
isodes\, though only two segments were completed. Set to Tchaikovsky’s F
ourth Symphony\, animals and fantasy creatures warn humans about the dan
ger of destroying natural habitats\, while Tezuka warns of cheap\, limit
ed TV animation decimating the art’s rich heritage (co-directed by Kouji
  Ui).\nJapan / 1987 / 29 min.\n\n<strong>Part of the film series</strong

DESCRIPTION:(Ages 8-14 with adult companion) What if you had a book that
could help you decide if today was safe to ride your bike? Long ago roy
alty and commoners alike in Turkey and Iran consulted the <em>Falnama</e
m> for advice and predictions about the future. Use an activity book to
examine lavishly illustrated pages from <em>Falnamas</em> for clues\, re
ad the omens\, and follow the warnings. In the classroom create an amule

et no. 3\, commissioned to celebrate the Shanghai Quartet’s twenty-fifth
anniversary. The program also features Beethoven’s Quartet no. 11\, Deb
 ussy’s Quartet in G Minor\, and Yi-Wen Jiang’s new arrangements of Chine
se folk songs. The Shanghai Quartet has appeared annually at the Freer s
