Discovering the Bay Shore and Mud Flats

The public is invited to take part in free Discovering the Bay Shore and Mud Flats lectures every Sunday at Galveston Island State Park. Meet at the Nature Center at 10am. Learn how to seine and discover the richness of these wetlands nurseries under the guidance of Friends of Galveston Island State Park volunteers. Wear old tie-on closed shoes, water shoes or waders if you plan to seine or you can stay dry and just inspect the catch.

Galveston Island State Park, in Galveston County, is in the City of Galveston on the west end of Galveston Island. It is a 2,013.1-acre site that was acquired in 1969 from private owners under the State Parks Bond Program and was opened in 1975.

Galveston Island is believed to be approximately 5000 years old and has had an interesting history during the past 500 years. It is generally believed Cabeza de Vaca and his crew were shipwrecked here in 1520 and eventually made their way from the island to colonies in Mexico. The LaFitte brothers, fleeing the prosecution of pirates in the United States, established a government here in 1817, with visions of creating a "Manhattan on the Gulf." Commerce did thrive here, but major storms in 1867, 1871, 1875, and 1886 greatly slowed progress. The great storm of 1900 devastated the island, killing 5000 to 10,000 people, and prompted the construction of the seawall which protects the northern half of the island.

Wading and shore birds, mottled and mallard ducks, raccoons, armadillos, and marsh rabbits can be found in the park for observation and photography.

An IMAX® 3D experience, Disney’s A Christmas Carol, premieres Friday, Nov. 6 on the biggest screen in the Houston area. Starring Jim Carrey and directed by Academy Award® winning filmmaker Robert Zemeckis, the holiday film captures the fantastical essence of the classic Dickens tale in a groundbreaking 3D motion picture event.

“This is a great film that will complement our annual Festival of Lights nicely,” said Moody Gardens General Manager John Zendt who added that there will be a long list of special activities at Moody Gardens throughout the holiday season ranging from the world’s largest Bah Humbug to a Fruit Cake Launch. “We are anticipating a memorable holiday experience as we offer our guests the best IMAX® 3D experience in our area.”

Walt Disney Pictures and ImageMovers Digital present Disney’s A Christmas Carol from Robert Zemeckis’s own adaptation based on the classic novella by Charles Dickens. The stellar cast is led by multi-faceted actor Jim Carrey, who, like many of his co-stars, appears in several pivotal roles. In addition to portraying Ebenezer Scrooge at various ages, old and young, Carrey brings to life the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Christmas Yet to Come.

Ebenezer Scrooge, played by Jim Carrey, begins the Christmas holiday with his usual miserly contempt, barking at his faithful clerk (Gray Oldman) and his cheery nephew (Colin Firth). Scrooge later encounters the ghost of his dead business partner Joseph Marley, who is paying the price in the afterlife for his own callousness. Marley hopes to help Scrooge avoid a similar fate and tells him that he will be visited by three spirits. But when the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come take Old Scrooge on an eye-opening journey revealing truths he is reluctant to face, he must open his heart to undo years of ill will before it’s too late.

This exhibit traces the history of early Texas banking and the involvement of the Moody family of Galveston in the expansion of that industry. Colonel William Lewis Moody began the family’s banking heritage by serving as president of the National Bank of Texas, which was the second bank established in the state receiving its charter on March 6, 1866. His son, W. L. Moody, Jr., continued the family tradition with the founding of City National Bank in 1907 and the establishment of W. L. Moody and Company Bankers, Unincorporated in 1916. W. L. Moody, Jr.’s daughter, Mary Moody Northen, and his grandson, Robert L. Moody, Sr., upheld the family banking tradition. Learn about the history of this family and their leadership in the development of the Texas banking industry.

The guided tour of the Moody Mansion includes a history of the Moody family in the context of late 19th and 20th century Galveston and Texas.

The furnishings are all original to the family and to the house. Each room on the main floor is decorated in a different style. The house was meticulously restored in the late 1980s and first opened to the public in 1991. The tour lasts about one hour. Pre-arranged group tours for both adults and young people are welcome.

The Mansion's current exhibit is "Auto Fever," housed in a new garage facility a few steps from Moody Mansion’s back door. Centerpieces of the exhibit are three restored automobiles that belonged to members of the Moody family, surrounded by exhibits on the impact of the automobile on the Moody Family, Galveston, Texas and the United States. This separate exhibit facility is included in the price of admission to Moody Mansion.

"Chuy Benitez: Summer in the City" and "Mark Schatz: Earth Below us" will remain on view through November 22, 2009, and are free and open to the public. Curator Clint Willour will lead a gallery talk with the artists at 6:15 pm.

"Chuy Benitez: Summer in the City" features digitally-composed color panoramic photographs taken in New York City in 2009 and Houston in 2008. Documenting ethnic community groups, Benitez photographed “Danzantes” (traditional Aztec fire dancers) in Central Park and a Hare Krishna parade in lower Manhattan. Using digital imaging technology, Benitez “stitches” together multiple photographs to create a single horizontal image. “‘New’ techniques of photography have kept ethnic communities in the US undocumented within the national culture simply because the members within the community cannot often afford the equipment necessary to create these advanced images…,” Benitez writes. “Images made within ethnic communities are often looked down upon as being ‘behind the times’ or as naïve images.” It is through his photos that Benitez, using ultra-modern artistic practices, is able to visually represent communities that may otherwise be overlooked or otherwise thought of as unsophisticated.

In 2008, Benitez photographed the after effects of Hurricane Ike on Houston’s Hispanic community, documenting the distribution of supplies and bottled water and clean-up and repair efforts. These works were recently included in the publication, "Houston. It’s Worth It. IKE." Benitez is an internationally exhibited and collected Chicano photographer who currently lives and works in Houston, but is originally from El Paso. He received a BA in photography from the University of Notre Dame in 2005, and an MFA in photography/digital media from the University of Houston in 2008. His work is in the permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Gilberto Cardenas Collection of Latino Art, and Mexic-Arte Museum, Austin.

Sculptor Mark Schatz turns the world upside down in his site-specific sculptural installation addressing the potential effects of global warming. Using materials accumulated or discarded in domestic environments (cardboard, scrap wood and Styrofoam), and scale-modeling methods used by hobbyists, Schatz fabricates worlds that are both obsessively meticulous and improvisational. “Inspired in part by the devastating impact of economic or natural disasters, as well as the reinvention and rediscovery that can follow in their wake,” writes Schatz “it is not always clear whether these unstable landscapes are growing, slipping into gradual decay, or both.”

A native of Michigan, Schatz received a BFA in sculpture in 1998 from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and an MFA in from The University of Texas at Austin in 2005. He currently lives in Houston and teaches at The Glassell School of Art at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and San Jacinto College. His work has most recently been featured in exhibitions at Lawndale Art Center in Houston, and College of the Mainland, Texas City.

Galveston Arts Center is currently operating “in exile” from our second temporary downtown gallery space—the site of the former Maceo’s Spice and Import Company located on the corner of Market and 25th Streets. The administrative offices are also at this location. The gallery and selections from GAC’s museum shop, ArtWorks, are open to the public Wednesday through Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm. The Bishop's Palace is one of the best known and most widely recognized historic attractions in the country. It is listed by the U. S. Department of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark, and has been named by the American Institute of Architects as the 14th most important Victorian building in America.

Galveston’s grandest and best-known building, the Bishop’s Palace is an ornate delight of colored stone, intricately carved ornaments, rare woods, stained-glass windows, bronze dragons and other sculptures, luxury materials and furnishings, and impressive fireplaces from around the world (including one lined with pure silver!).

Built by lawyer Colonel Walter Gresham and designed by Nicholas Clayton, Galveston’s premier architect, this Victorian castle was cited by the American Institute of Architects as one of the 100 most important buildings in America. The home was built from 1886 to 1892.

If you can only visit one of Galveston’s architectural treasures, the exquisite Bishop’s Palace is the one to see. The building is owned by the Galveston-Houston Catholic Archdioces, and is managed as a museum by Galveston Historical Foundation.

James Busby is a prolific artist who is inspired by the natural environment. Viewers will find evidence of West Texas scenery and the Southwest United States in many of his paintings and sculptures. Busby uses his childhood experiences from the Woodlands of East Texas and the Texas Plains country to interpret nature in a unique style which incorporates elements of his major influences; the French Impressionists, J.M.W. Bogan Gallery is located at 2217 Postoffice Street, and is owned and operated by Susan Bogan. Mrs. Bogan is an Art Historian and a university Art History instructor who has left the academic world to open the gallery in Galveston.

The works exhibited in the gallery have a diverse range, from Native American influences to modern abstraction, from impressionist landscapes to glass, ceramics, and woodturning.

Ashton Villa is currently hosting “Restoration in Progress" Tours at Ashton Villa," every Friday, Saturday, & Sunday. The tours lead visitors through the still unfinished, unfurnished main floor, whose original plaster walls are still drying, describing in detail the damage that occurred to the property as a result of Hurricane Ike and the steps that will be necessary to fully restore the mansion. The undamaged, still furnished second floor of Ashton Villa will be included in the tour as well.

The oldest mansion on Broadway, Ashton Villa was built in 1859 on the eve of the Civil War. It was operated as a house museum by Galveston Historical Foundation for decades until its first floor was flooded by Hurricane Ike on September 12, 2008.

The new Friday, Saturday, and Sunday tours at Ashton Villa will be held at 2 p.m., 3 p.m., and 4 p.m. The price will be $9 for adults ($2 will go to match the Save America's Treasures Grant), $6 for students 6 to 18, $23 for a family pass (two adults and up to three students under 18), and free for kids 0 to 5.

The new tour will cover the history of the house, the family, the 1900 Hurricane, the grade raising, Hurricane Ike, and preservation/restoration problems of the house has faced both before and after Hurricane Ike. Problems such as the deterioration of the brick, the rising damp, will be covered, as will the possible solutions to those problems, and the damage and remediation of the building after Ike.

After losing their way on a cold, blustery Christmas eve, two children, Katie and Makean are rescued by their friend, The Candleman, an old sage who imparts wisdom, hot chocolate and stories. He immediately invites the shivering children to his cozy cottage where he helps them warm up and dry out their mittens.

Knowing a little holiday magic will raise the children's spirits, The Candleman opens a weathered book and begins to read the classic tale, "The Night Before Christmas." To their astonishment, Katie and Makean find themselves as characters in the poem, where they experience the wonder and delight of Santa's visit to their home, complete with Hob the Elf and full team of reindeer. Hoping not to be seen, the children sneak from their bedroom and watch wide-eyed as Santa carefully fills the stocking and gently tucks gifts under the glittering Christmas tree.

This stunning Stop-Motion Animated film fills the Giant Screen with lavishly detailed sets and characters inspired by the fascinating designs of renowned artist James C. Christensen, while the musical score hearkens back to many beloved Christmas classics.

Just before the closing credits roll, Santa and Hob reappear and take the audience on a whimsical tour through the magical workshop where THE LIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS was made. Artists create sets and characters, voice actors demonstrate their talents, and animators devote their skills and experience in bringing the script to life.

The oldest mansion on Broadway, Ashton Villa was built in 1859 on the eve of the Civil War. It was operated as a house museum by Galveston Historical Foundation for decades until its first floor was flooded by Hurricane Ike on September 12, 2008.

The new Friday, Saturday, and Sunday tours at Ashton Villa will be held at 2 p.m., 3 p.m., and 4 p.m. The price will be $9 for adults ($2 will go to match the Save America's Treasures Grant), $6 for students 6 to 18, $23 for a family pass (two adults and up to three students under 18), and free for kids 0 to 5.

The new tour will cover the history of the house, the family, the 1900 Hurricane, the grade raising, Hurricane Ike, and preservation/restoration problems of the house has faced both before and after Hurricane Ike. Problems such as the deterioration of the brick, the rising damp, will be covered, as will the possible solutions to those problems, and the damage and remediation of the building after Ike.

The ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future are coming to Moody Gardens to kick off the holiday season in Galveston. An IMAX® 3D experience, Disney’s A Christmas Carol, premieres Friday, Nov. 6 on the biggest screen in the Houston area. Starring Jim Carrey and directed by Academy Award® winning filmmaker Robert Zemeckis, the holiday film captures the fantastical essence of the classic Dickens tale in a groundbreaking 3D motion picture event.

“This is a great film that will complement our annual Festival of Lights nicely,” said Moody Gardens General Manager John Zendt who added that there will be a long list of special activities at Moody Gardens throughout the holiday season ranging from the world’s largest Bah Humbug to a Fruit Cake Launch. “We are anticipating a memorable holiday experience as we offer our guests the best IMAX® 3D experience in our area.”

Walt Disney Pictures and ImageMovers Digital present Disney’s A Christmas Carol from Robert Zemeckis’s own adaptation based on the classic novella by Charles Dickens. The stellar cast is led by multi-faceted actor Jim Carrey, who, like many of his co-stars, appears in several pivotal roles. In addition to portraying Ebenezer Scrooge at various ages, old and young, Carrey brings to life the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Christmas Yet to Come.

Ebenezer Scrooge, played by Jim Carrey, begins the Christmas holiday with his usual miserly contempt, barking at his faithful clerk (Gray Oldman) and his cheery nephew (Colin Firth). Scrooge later encounters the ghost of his dead business partner Joseph Marley, who is paying the price in the afterlife for his own callousness. Marley hopes to help Scrooge avoid a similar fate and tells him that he will be visited by three spirits. But when the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come take Old Scrooge on an eye-opening journey revealing truths he is reluctant to face, he must open his heart to undo years of ill will before it’s too late.

Unlike standard 3D films shown at the Moody Gardens 3D Giant Screen Theater, Disney’s A Christmas Carol is one hour and 40-minute long and will be shown daily through Jan. 8.
