Galveston Mardi Gras Marathon & Half Marathon

You're invited to take part in the Galveston Mardi Gras Marathon and Half Marathon. Scheduled for February 5 and featuring Koala Health & Wellness Centers as a presenting sponsor, the race, now in its second year, represents a rebirth for distance running on the island. Galveston had not hosted a marathon since the Galveston Marathon ceased to exist in the mid-1990s.

The race is the creation of the husband and wife running juggernaut of Kevin and Jana Landry, owners of the On The Run and Tri On The Run specialty stores in Clear Lake and Houston, who serve as race directors, along with partner Jay Lee.

"Before, the race was just the Galveston Marathon and was not associated with Mardi Gras," Jana Landry said. "When we decided to bring the marathon back to Galveston, we wanted to incorporate it with the Mardi Gras to bring that theme to the race."

The race takes place the week before the madness of Mardi Gras engulfs the island from February 10th through the 21st. The race's inaugural edition in 2011 attracted about 1,200 runners, most of whom competed in the 13.1-mile half marathon.

"About two-thirds of the runners ran in the half marathon last year, and we expect that to be the case this year. The half marathon just seems to be a more doable distance for most people," Landry says.

The fact that Galveston Island is only about 27 miles in distance makes utilizing a loop course a necessity for a 26.2-mile race. Half marathoners will complete one lap, while the marathon field makes a couple of loops around. Landry says the flat-as-a-pancake certified course begins at Saengerfest Park on the Strand at 23rd Street and runs along the Sea Wall to about 14th Street, then back up the Sea Wall all the way down to East Beach, where it then sends runners back to the start.

Landry says runners representing 30 states and several countries including Canada, Great Britain and Mexico have registered to participate this year, with the field growing by about 400 runners over last year. Even though Mardi Gras won't be officially underway by the time the starting gun fires, Landry says the yearly bacchanal's influence won't be hard to spot.

"We definitely try to incorporate Mardi Gras into the race. Last year we had a few people who were dressed pretty crazy in the race and we make sure our water stop people are wearing beads to help keep the theme going," she said.

A bevy of volunteers is needed to ensure the race runs smoothly and to operate the water stops, which are positioned every mile-and-a-half to two miles along the course. Volunteers from organizations like UTMB and the Galveston Community Emergency Management Team (CERT), along with individuals and businesses such as the Fit to Run running shop, help with everything from working the water stops to assisting in packet pick-up and post-race activities.

Landry, along with husband Kevin and Lee, also runs a race management company that puts on several runs and triathlons around the Houston area each year, is not just a race director. She's an accomplished runner who has competed in numerous marathons, including the Boston Marathon on two occasions and eight Ironman triathlons, but she won't be running on February 5.

"I'm a little too busy as race director to run in the race," she adds.

Last year's overall male winner was Christopher Jackson (2:56.36), and the women's winner was Jacqueline O'Brien-Nolen (3:337.06). In the half marathon, Paul Riley (1:09.59) claimed the men's overall title, while Patricia Acopa (1:29.36) was the women's champion.

A portion of the race proceeds benefit the Open Door Mission and area children's charities. Landry says packet pick-up is scheduled for February 3rd and 4th at Fit to Run in Galveston.

Moody Mansion Tour

The stars of Bugs!, Hierodula, the mantis, and Papilio, the butterfly, are born in the same part of the exotic Borneo rainforest. Their home is the foliage around an abandoned and dilapidated shack on the edge of the river. Here, we witness Hierodula and Papilio mature and grow.

Hierodula develops by incomplete metamorphosis; emerging from his egg as a mini-mantis and shedding his skin regularly on the way to gaining his adult wings. Papilio goes through a complete metamorphosis, from caterpillar to butterfly via the pupal stage.

As they develop we meet a fascinating array of creatures who share their habitat. After many near misses, the hunter, Hierodula, acting on instinct, catches Papilio. The Bishop's Palace is one of the best known and most widely recognized historic attractions in the country. It is listed by the U. S. Department of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark, and has been named by the American Institute of Architects as the 14th most important Victorian building in America.

Galveston’s grandest and best-known building, the Bishop’s Palace is an ornate delight of colored stone, intricately carved ornaments, rare woods, stained-glass windows, bronze dragons and other sculptures, luxury materials and furnishings, and impressive fireplaces from around the world (including one lined with pure silver!).

Built by lawyer Colonel Walter Gresham and designed by Nicholas Clayton, Galveston’s premier architect, this Victorian castle was cited by the American Institute of Architects as one of the 100 most important buildings in America. The home was built from 1886 to 1892.

If you can only visit one of Galveston’s architectural treasures, the exquisite Bishop’s Palace is the one to see. The building is owned by the Galveston-Houston Catholic Archdioces, and is managed as a museum by Galveston Historical Foundation.

Haunted Mayfield Manor is the home of Dr. Horace Mayfield, once a respected doctor, upcoming community leader, and son of a prominent physician in Galveston.

Dr. Mayfield pursued a career in general medicine to follow in his father's footsteps, however his first love was the study of the mental capacity and mental illnesses of humans. During his tenure as a public physician, he began to perform experiments on his unwitting patients. His experiments involved the study of the impact of fearful situations on individuals.

During the great Hurricane of 1900, Dr. Mayfield - who was engaged to be married prior to the storm - lost his bride, the lovely blonde Sara Stone. He also lost his parents, including his mother - the bedridden Lenora Mayfield - and his father, Dr. Horatio Mayfield. Most importantly to the young Dr. Horace Mayfield, all his research documentation was also lost in the great storm.

It is said that witnessing the death and destruction of the great storm - together with his own personal loss - drove the doctor insane.

His madness continues to this day as he tries to recoup his losses and continue his research. You are invited to participate in that ongoing research...

Galveston’s grandest and best-known building, the Bishop’s Palace is an ornate delight of colored stone, intricately carved ornaments, rare woods, stained-glass windows, bronze dragons and other sculptures, luxury materials and furnishings, and impressive fireplaces from around the world (including one lined with pure silver!).

Built by lawyer Colonel Walter Gresham and designed by Nicholas Clayton, Galveston’s premier architect, this Victorian castle was cited by the American Institute of Architects as one of the 100 most important buildings in America. The home was built from 1886 to 1892.

If you can only visit one of Galveston’s architectural treasures, the exquisite Bishop’s Palace is the one to see. The building is owned by the Galveston-Houston Catholic Archdioces, and is managed as a museum by Galveston Historical Foundation.

"Embracing Aging" Exhibit

The Rosenberg Library Museum is proud to present a new photography exhibit entitled "Embracing Aging" currently on display in Harris Gallery (open from 9:00 A.M.-6:00 P.M.) through the end of March 2012. The show is a collaborative effort between the Library and the Galveston Reads program. Galveston Reads is a community-wide book club that encourages unity through literature. This year’s book is the best-selling Still Alice by Lisa Genova, which follows the struggles and triumphs of a woman who is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

"Embracing Aging" features works by accomplished local photographers Barbara Pursley and Marilyn Brodwick. Both artists spotlight aging and present images that invoke powerful emotions and draw viewers in for a closer look to see the beauty in ‘ordinary’ people. Pursley and Brodwick will speak at the library on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. during Galveston Art Walk (please enter the library through the ground floor doors). The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Barbara Pursley’s black and white photographs are taken from her book "Embracing the Moment: An Alzheimer’s Memoir." In it, Pursley shares the experience of becoming her mother’s caregiver after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Her photographs depict a bitter-sweet journey through the declining stages of the disease, and offered her a way of coping with the difficulty of being a caregiver. Not only did photography help Pursley preserve a moment in time, it also gave her a way to connect with her mother.

The "Embracing Aging" exhibit also features color photographs by Marilyn Spievak Brodwick that have never before been seen by the public. Her portraits focus the viewers’ attention to the beauty—and occasionally the pain—of each subject. Brodwick met many of her subjects on the streets and “tried to sense the person behind the mask of age” before taking any pictures. Like Pursley, Brodwick feels that her camera connects her to her subjects. She believes that “When you look at the outside of a person, you don’t see the life. The way into the fullness and beauty of life may be a wrinkled hand or the sadness or fierce gleam of an eye.”

With longer life-expediency rates and an aging population, health problems like Alzheimer’s disease and dementia now touch many more lives than in years past. Please join the Rosenberg Library as it offers a forum to highlight this important issue. The striking quilt designs of The Judy Niemeyer Company are showcased at Galveston Historical Foundation’s U.S. Custom House, 2nd floor, 502 20th Street. This new collection can be viewed Monday - Friday from 9 am – 5 pm, closed holidays, through April 5.

“Judy Neimeyer had been a spare-time quilter, selling quilts since graduating from high school, and sewing while her own children were in school.” says guest curator Jenny Chiovaro. “In the early 90’s quilters began drawing shapes on paper, sewing fabric wrong-side up, then flipping the shape over and sewing another fabric on top, using the lines on the paper side as guides. They called it “foundation piecing” or “paper piecing” and Judy immediately saw how this modern method could produce a traditional look. She drew upon her drafting and engineering skills to draft very complex-looking patterns in manageable blocks that were easy to print, easy to sew, and easy to put together. The end result is striking—looking anything but easy.”

Galveston Historical Foundation will host a reception for the quilt exhibit during the January 28th ArtWalk from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Admittance is free for the reception and daily showings.

Bugs! A Rainforest adventure is a live-action nature drama filmed in awe inspiring, totally immersive large format. Shot on location in Borneo and in a purpose-built studio in Oxford, England, Bugs! explores the dramatic and savage lives of an Old World praying mantis and a beautiful butterfly, known by their Latin names, Hierodula and Papilio.

This 40-minute feature combines incredible footage with cutting-edge IMAX® technology to deliver a fantastically entertaining and enlightening experience about the little guys in life.

The stars of Bugs!, Hierodula, the mantis, and Papilio, the butterfly, are born in the same part of the exotic Borneo rainforest. Their home is the foliage around an abandoned and dilapidated shack on the edge of the river. Here, we witness Hierodula and Papilio mature and grow.

Hierodula develops by incomplete metamorphosis; emerging from his egg as a mini-mantis and shedding his skin regularly on the way to gaining his adult wings. Papilio goes through a complete metamorphosis, from caterpillar to butterfly via the pupal stage.

As they develop we meet a fascinating array of creatures who share their habitat. After many near misses, the hunter, Hierodula, acting on instinct, catches Papilio. In an uplifting ending we discover that Papilio had managed to lay her eggs before being caught, and the film ends with her offspring emerging from her tiny egg to continue the circle of life.

Department of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark, and has been named by the American Institute of Architects as the 14th most important Victorian building in America.

Galveston’s grandest and best-known building, the Bishop’s Palace is an ornate delight of colored stone, intricately carved ornaments, rare woods, stained-glass windows, bronze dragons and other sculptures, luxury materials and furnishings, and impressive fireplaces from around the world (including one lined with pure silver!).

Built by lawyer Colonel Walter Gresham and designed by Nicholas Clayton, Galveston’s premier architect, this Victorian castle was cited by the American Institute of Architects as one of the 100 most important buildings in America. The home was built from 1886 to 1892.

If you can only visit one of Galveston’s architectural treasures, the exquisite Bishop’s Palace is the one to see. The building is owned by the Galveston-Houston Catholic Archdioces, and is managed as a museum by Galveston Historical Foundation.

"Embracing Aging" Exhibit

The Rosenberg Library Museum is proud to present a new photography exhibit entitled "Embracing Aging" currently on display in Harris Gallery (open from 9:00 A.M.-6:00 P.M.) through the end of March 2012. The show is a collaborative effort between the Library and the Galveston Reads program. Galveston Reads is a community-wide book club that encourages unity through literature. This year’s book is the best-selling Still Alice by Lisa Genova, which follows the struggles and triumphs of a woman who is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

"Embracing Aging" features works by accomplished local photographers Barbara Pursley and Marilyn Brodwick. Both artists spotlight aging and present images that invoke powerful emotions and draw viewers in for a closer look to see the beauty in ‘ordinary’ people. Pursley and Brodwick will speak at the library on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. during Galveston Art Walk (please enter the library through the ground floor doors). The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Barbara Pursley’s black and white photographs are taken from her book "Embracing the Moment: An Alzheimer’s Memoir." In it, Pursley shares the experience of becoming her mother’s caregiver after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Her photographs depict a bitter-sweet journey through the declining stages of the disease, and offered her a way of coping with the difficulty of being a caregiver. Not only did photography help Pursley preserve a moment in time, it also gave her a way to connect with her mother.

The "Embracing Aging" exhibit also features color photographs by Marilyn Spievak Brodwick that have never before been seen by the public. Her portraits focus the viewers’ attention to the beauty—and occasionally the pain—of each subject. Brodwick met many of her subjects on the streets and “tried to sense the person behind the mask of age” before taking any pictures. Like Pursley, Brodwick feels that her camera connects her to her subjects. She believes that “When you look at the outside of a person, you don’t see the life. The way into the fullness and beauty of life may be a wrinkled hand or the sadness or fierce gleam of an eye.”

With longer life-expediency rates and an aging population, health problems like Alzheimer’s disease and dementia now touch many more lives than in years past. Please join the Rosenberg Library as it offers a forum to highlight this important issue. Judy Neimeyer Company Quilts

The striking quilt designs of The Judy Niemeyer Company are showcased at Galveston Historical Foundation’s U.S. Custom House, 2nd floor, 502 20th Street. This new collection can be viewed Monday - Friday from 9 am – 5 pm, closed holidays, through April 5.

“Judy Neimeyer had been a spare-time quilter, selling quilts since graduating from high school, and sewing while her own children were in school.” says guest curator Jenny Chiovaro. “In the early 90’s quilters began drawing shapes on paper, sewing fabric wrong-side up, then flipping the shape over and sewing another fabric on top, using the lines on the paper side as guides. They called it “foundation piecing” or “paper piecing” and Judy immediately saw how this modern method could produce a traditional look. She drew upon her drafting and engineering skills to draft very complex-looking patterns in manageable blocks that were easy to print, easy to sew, and easy to put together. The end result is striking—looking anything but easy.”

Galveston Historical Foundation will host a reception for the quilt exhibit during the January 28th ArtWalk from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Admittance is free for the reception and daily showings.

The stars of Bugs!, Hierodula, the mantis, and Papilio, the butterfly, are born in the same part of the exotic Borneo rainforest. Their home is the foliage around an abandoned and dilapidated shack on the edge of the river. Here, we witness Hierodula and Papilio mature and grow.

Hierodula develops by incomplete metamorphosis; emerging from his egg as a mini-mantis and shedding his skin regularly on the way to gaining his adult wings. Papilio goes through a complete metamorphosis, from caterpillar to butterfly via the pupal stage.

As they develop we meet a fascinating array of creatures who share their habitat. After many near misses, the hunter, Hierodula, acting on instinct, catches Papilio. Galveston Arts Center is pleased to present an exhibition of recent work by Dallas-based artist Charlotte Smith titled dot, dot, dot. The exhibition will open during the January 28 ArtWalk and remain on view through February 26, 2012. Curator Clint Willour will lead a gallery talk with the artist beginning at 6:30 pm during ArtWalk. The event is free and open to the public.

Described as “trans-dimensional,” Charlotte Smith’s works are at once sculptural paintings and painted sculpture. Building multi-colored strata of paint, Smith variously flattens the paint blobs onto the surface of the canvas, creating colorful, confetti-like concentric circles. In other works, she attaches slender stacks of droplets to the canvas, evoking dangling stalactites or beaded strings. Finally, she abandons the substrate altogether, creating piles of paint blob ropes. While the influence of French Pointillist Georges Seurat is evident, Smith is much more interested in the manipulation of the material and repetitive mark making than creating a specific image.

In her most recent work, Smith layers glossy droplets of paint over brightly colored and textured backgrounds of polychromatic drips, puddles and pools. Again avoiding overt imagery, the canvases are reminiscent of seascapes (Lost in You, 2011), fields of flowers (Coraluscious, 2011), or even something that might be encountered under a microscope (Gray Glow, 2011). Smith’s fields of color swirl and melt. “This series signals a breakthrough, a point of departure,” writes art critic Catherine Anspon. “Smith’s convincing, surely applied brushwork and new, inventive media are novel and pioneering…. It’s not necessary to know how these sculptural canvases were formed. It’s enough to simply savor the effects.”

Smith received an MFA from the University of North Texas at Denton in 1999. Recent solo exhibitions of her work have been hosted at Cris Worley Fine Arts, Dallas; Anya Tish Gallery, Houston; and George Billis Gallery, Los Angeles. Her work is included in the exhibition Obsessive Worlds currently on view at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas in Beaumont. Smith is included in the publication Texas Artists Today, written by Catherine Anspon and published in 2010 by Marquand Books. The artist currently lives and works in Dallas.

Galveston Arts Center is operating in a temporary downtown location on the corner of Market and 25th Streets. The exhibition gallery and selections from GAC’s retail gallery, ArtWorks, are open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, from 11 am to 5 pm, and Sunday from noon to 5 pm. Admission is free at all times.
