Wild Swans

American Repertory Theater, Loeb Drama Center
Sunday, February 12, 2012, 7:30 – 9pm

Wild Swans is a world premiere stage adaptation of Jung Chang’s astonishing personal memoir and international bestseller. It takes us on a journey from the early days of Communist hope and struggle, through the chaos and confusion of Mao’s Cultural Revolution, to the birth of a superpower. The epic production uses original music, film, puppetry, and dynamic video design. The ensemble of British and American actors of Asian descent includes actress Katie Leung, best known as Harry Potter’s girlfriend Cho Chang in the film series, playing Er-Hong, the character based on Jung Chang. This gut-wrenching story of one family's struggle through ever changing political and social conditions raises questions about how far we are willing to go to protect our family and our principles. heck website for specific performance dates and times.

Gazette Classification: Theater
Organization/Sponsor: American Repertory Theater
Directed By: Sacha Wares
Written By: Jung Chang, adapted by Alexandra Wood
Cost: $25 and up
Ticket Web Link: www.americanrepertorytheater.org…
Ticket Info: 617.547.8300
More info: www.americanrepertorytheater.org…

Traveling Between Worlds: Stories in the Classroom

Harvard Graduate School of Education, Longfellow Hall, 14 Appian Way, Eliot Lyman room, second floor
Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 11:45am – 1pm

This presentation will assess what kinds of insights are made available to us when we listen to stories, and will expand on this to consider the pedagogical implications of ‘narrative knowing’. Critical to this discussion are questions of standpoint: where does the speaker place themselves within the story they tell – in the center? On the margins? Both inside and outside? – and how are they positioned by others? After considering these questions, the paper will explore a narrative approach to learning, drawing on my experiences in the classroom over the past two decades.

Gazette Classification: Education, Lecture, Social Sciences
Speaker(s): Molly Andrews, professor of political psychology, University of East London, co-director, Centre for Narrative Research, Elizabeth Dawes-Duraisingh, discussant

American Repertory Theater, Loeb Drama Center
Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 7:30 – 9pm

Wild Swans

American Repertory Theater, Loeb Drama Center
Wednesday, February 15, 2012, 7:30 – 9pm

The Future of Northeast Asia: Mobilization System Life Cycles

124 Mt. Auburn Street, Suite 200-North
Thursday, February 16, 2012, 4:10 – 5:30pm

Asian politics has been driven by the “Asian economic miracles,” which resulted from the use of mobilization systems. These systems work only in relatively cohesive societies motivated by a high level of fear. When successful, they either decay into stagnant domination by bloated bureaucracies and reactionary interest groups or evolve into more competitive economies and polities. China faces a decisive choice between a milder version of Japanese decay and a reignition of reforms that could yield global leadership. These evolutions will determine power relations in Asia and much of the future of global politics.

Gazette Classification: Classes/Workshops, Lecture, Social Sciences
Organization/Sponsor: Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation
Speaker(s): William Overholt, senior research fellow, Ash Center
Cost: Free
Contact Info: Jesse Ledin: jesse_ledin@hks.harvard.edu, 617.495.7825
More info: ash.harvard.edu…

Biodiversity, Ecology, and Global Change. “Global Change, Biodiversity and Poverty: Insights from the Himalaya”

Biolabs Lecture Hall, 16 Divinity Ave, Cambridge
Thursday, February 16, 2012, 5 – 6pm

Followed by a reception.

Global change in the form of climate, land use and biodiversity change is underway in the Himalayas at an unprecedented rapid rate. The Himalayas are the most spectacular of the 34 global hotspots of biodiversity. With about 15 000 glaciers—the highest concentration in the world— these mountains are also the source of Asia’s eight largest rivers. More than 2.0 billion people inhabit the basins of these rivers. Thus global change in the Himalayas is likely to have serious consequences for almost one third of the humanity. In the first part of his talk, Kamal will present recent data from his group on climate and land use change in the Himalayas. In the second part, he will outline the constraints in maintaining multi-functional landscapes that could conserve ecosystem services and foster human wellbeing. In the third and final part, he will comment on the knowledge and institutions required to promote landscape resilience.

Gazette Classification: Environmental Sciences, Lecture, Sustainability
Organization/Sponsor: Harvard University Center for the Environment with generous support from Bank of America
Speaker(s): Kamaljit S.
