Come out and join the fun. The Department of Recreation and Parks and volunteers from the Sepulveda Basin Off Leash Dog Park Advisory Board are holding a Valentine’s Day Celebration on Sunday, February 19th, from 10am – 3pm. The event includes a peanut butter lick-off contest for the dogs; park clean up; blankets, bedding and food collection for dogs in our LA shelters and dog adoptions thru Best Friends Animal Society.

Best Friends has entered into a partnership with Los Angeles Animal Services to lease its Northeast Valley Shelter and transform it into a Best Friends Pet Adoption and Spay/Neuter Services. Year-one targeted goals for this new undertaking are to find homes for a minimum of 3,000 L.A. city shelter animals and provide 6,000 spay/neuter procedures for the community, along with a variety of special events and community outreach programs.

Adoptions will be taking place throughout the event from 10am – 3pm. Open your heart and save a life by adopting the next member of your family.

Volunteers will be on hand accepting donations of new/ used blankets, towels, sheets, dog beds and unopened bags/ cans of dog food for dogs in the city’s shelters. Now’s the perfect time get a jump start on spring cleaning and help keep a dog warm this winter.

Festivities kick off with a park clean up from 10am-12pm when volunteers gather to help spruce up the park. Volunteers will fill holes, rake leaves, clean chairs and benches, clear the grounds of anything that isn’t supposed to be there and have lots of fun while making the park shine. Registration begins at 9:00am.

At 12pm dogs of all sizes will compete for top dog honors in the peanut butter lick-off contest. Dog will be separated into groups by size. The first dog to lick its spoon clean will be declared the winner. Awards will be given to the winner in each group. It’s not too late, start training today!!

After the event, Los Angeles Animal Services (LAAS) will join the park’s weekly low cost vaccination clinic, from 3:30pm -5pm. LAAS Officers will be available to collect new and renewal applications for dog licensing, discuss LAs mandatory spay/ neuter law and talk about free to low cost sterilizations options that your pet may qualify for. The cost to license a spay/neutered dog is only $20. The fee is discounted for low income seniors (62 +)/disabled persons licensing a companion dog. Licenses must be renewed annually. Please remember to bring a check with you to cover the cost of the license, cash is not accepted.

All dogs over four months of age and kept within the City of Los Angeles must be licensed (LAMC 53.28) and must be spayed or neutered (LAMC 53.15.2(b)). A dog license is valid only when the required rabies vaccination certificate, issued by a licensed veterinarian, is provided to the Department and only as long as the rabies vaccination is effective. (LAMC 53.51)

Dogs must be licensed (including spayed/ neutered), current on their vaccinations, both dog and people friendly. All dogs must be leashed throughout the event.

The Sepulveda Basin Off Leash Dog Park is located at 17550 Victory Blvd., Encino, CA 91406 (White Oak & Balboa). The park is segregated into three separate enclosed areas for the dogs: under 20 lbs, small/ timid and large dogs. Here the dogs can come to socialize and exercise in a fun and safe environment. All dogs outside of the enclosures must be leashed at all times. All dogs entering the park must be licensed (including spayed/ neutered), current on their vaccinations, both dog and people friendly.

A new Park Advisory Board has been formed for the Sepulveda Basin Dog Park. The Advisory Board was formed so that people who use the Dog Park can meet with Recreation and Parks Officials and help shape the park's future uses, maintenance, and voice needs or concerns of the community.

The Park Advisory Board met for the first time Jan. 18 and will meet every third Tuesday of the month at Balboa Recreation Center. The Sepulveda Dog Park is a very important resource for our community, offering dog owners a chance to let their canine friends get exercise in a big open space and have important social play with other dogs.

We helped the users of the park form the Park Advisory Board as part of our support for the park and its users and to help ensure it remains clean, safe and well maintained.
