Join the museum in celebrating Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos! An opportunity for families to celebrate and commemorate their loved ones who have died, the celebration of the Day of the Dead is a growing phenomenon throughout the United States. Although its roots are pre-Columbian, Day of the Dead continues to be celebrated as one of the most important holidays in Mexico today. Mexicans comprise the largest segment of the U.S. Hispanic population and their influence is spreading throughout the nation.

11 AM-4 PM: An ofrenda will be created with elements honoring the memory of braceros, Mexican guest workers who labored in the United States from 1942–1964; that story is told in the Museum’s newest exhibition Bittersweet Harvest. Make your own paper flowers to leave at the museum’s ofrenda (altar) or to take home. (2nd floor, west)

12 Noon: Renown writer Mary Andrade shares Day of the Dead traditions and afterwards signs copies of her book Day of the Dead: A Passion for Life. (Presidential Suite, 1st floor)

Persian Calligraphy and Music: Bahman Panahi

Celebrate the opening of Falnama: The Book of Omens with a recital by Bahman Panahi, a Paris-based virtuoso of Persian classical music, an improvisational tradition related to the ragas of India. A trained calligrapher as well as musician, Panahi has appeared in concerts and workshops throughout the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe. His first American tour earlier this year included performances at Harvard University and Carnegie Hall. National Family Literacy Day

Enjoy a day of family-friendly storytelling opportunities and museum theater performances that bring alive two significant milestones in American history—the creation of the Star-Spangled Banner and the 1960 sit-ins for civil rights in Greensboro, N.C. A final schedule will be available one week prior.

The day’s programs are suitable for children ages 5 and older, their families and caregivers, and are a part of the Museum's participation in National Family Literacy Day. Families participating in D.C.-area family literacy programs have been invited to attend.

While storytelling sessions will only occur on that day, the museum theater performances ("Broad Stripes, Bright Stars" and "Join the Student Sit-Ins") can also be seen on weekends throughout the fall and winter.

Several books correspond to particular exhibitions and the performances, and are ideal for reading aloud. Freedom on the Menu: The Greensboro Sit-Ins by Carole Boston Weatherford and The Flag Maker by Susan Campbell Bartoletti, as well as others that extend the reading opportunity, are available in the Museum Store.

Oswald, an archivist at the museum's Archives Center, displays items from the collection that help tell the "The Straight Truth About the Flexible Drinking Straw," and other stories behind the inventions of Joseph B. Friedman. Visitors can see a mandrill that was used to make the FlexStraw (Friedman's most successful invention), samples of the straws, and an ice cream dispenser he invented but which never really took off. Some of the documents have been reproduced, which will allow an even closer look. A question-and-answer session follows.

The symposium opens with a keynote address by Dr. Bradford Parkinson, co-winner of the 2003 Draper Prize for the concept and development of the Global Positioning System (GPS). In his keynote address, Dr. Parkinson offers insights about the number one innovation that enabled GPS as well as the five major barriers to original success. He will also discuss general conclusions on sources of invention and innovation based on the GPS experience.

The Lemelson Center presents a 2-day symposium on Hot Spots of Invention as part of its New Perspectives on Invention and Innovation series.

Whether it’s Edison’s laboratory or Silicon Valley, both scholars and the public have long been curious about inventors and the places in which they work. The Hot Spots of Invention symposium will feature scholars, inventors, and practitioners who will explore how invention and innovation are fostered--or hindered--by physical environments.

The symposium sessions are divided into three broad categories--People, Spaces, and Places. Sessions on “place” explore the evolution of particular innovation hotspots and the factors that led to their creation. Sessions devoted to “people” explore the role and influence of charismatic, dynamic individuals and their relationships to the larger region around them. “Spaces” refers to the specific locations -- basement workshops to industrial laboratories -- that inventors generate and manipulate to suit their creative needs.

Harishchandra's Factory recounts the making of India’s first full-length feature film -- Raja Harishchandra -- which was brought to the screen in 1911 by a tenacious, pioneering ex-printer named Dadasaheb Phalke. This is the Washington, D.C., premiere of this film, India’s official entry for the Foreign Language Film category of the Academy Awards.

Spotlight on History: Skyhooking the Mail

Seventy years ago, an airplane swooped out of the sky to snatch a container full of mail suspended on a rope between two poles. Designed to provide airmail service to towns without airports, this unique form of airmail operated for about ten years and was invented by a dentist. From Main Street: Music and Sound in “Portrait of Maquoketa”

(for ages 5 and up) In this tale based on Zapotecas legends, Rabbit outwits Coyote at every turn -- in a garden of chile peppers, at a boiling cauldron, by a cactus, at a wasp's nest, on a quiet lagoon, and finally in an out-of-this-world location that could leave a creature howling! This imaginative opera by Victor Rasgado is sung in a fantastical imaginary language and narrated in Spanish. Celebrates American Indian Heritage Month.
Note: This performance was previously to be narrated in English; it will now be narrated in Spanish.
