"Going to The Dogs" Featured at High Desert Frameworks! Bend Oregon

It started one afternoon as Kathy Deggendorfer and Tonye Phillips took their dogs out for a walk along the Metolius River and wondered what the neighborhood looked like from “a dog's point of view.” The result is a delightful limited edition series of five watercolor and fabric art pieces from this talented collaborative duo. The images feature a variety of breeds on the “Street of Doghouse Dreams” - and what lucky pooch wouldn't want to live in these whimsical houses? Tonye's wonderful hand-quilted original designs are faithfully recreated – using fabrics sourced here in the United States – by skilled quilters in China. Kathy's colorful watercolor paintings are professionally reproduced as fine art giclees on high quality archival watercolor paper. The combined pieces of artwork are expertly framed by Myrna Dow, award winning framer, of the High Desert Gallery of Central Oregon. Come see what all the barking is about!

Plein Air Painters of Oregon Annual Show Moves To Redmond Gallery for November

After a successful month long exhibition and sale in Bend, the Plein Air Painters of Oregon Annual Show,titled “Celebration Oregon!”, will be moving to High Desert Gallery's Redmond location at 453 SW 6th Street at Evergreen, in downtown Redmond, Oregon. The exhibition and sale will be available from November 6th through November 30th, and features 40 paintings selected by juror, Cindy Briggs.

High Desert Gallery announces “Perception and Imagination: Exploring the Landscape,” a new collection of oil paintings by Oregon artist Sue Favinger Smith, as the November Artist Feature at our Bend Oregon Art Gallery at the Oxford Hotel, 10 NW Minnesota Avenue at Lava.

“I've always thought Perception without Imagination would create a world limited to things and not stories, which seems quite boring to me. I remember reading about the shamanistic influence for cave and rock art, explained by the San Bushmen in the Kalahari Desert. They said images did not always represent real people, animals, or places. Signs such as dots, lines, or alterations to form were used to signal a shaman's spiritual journey or change. These haunting rock paintings were not mere pictures but links to something deep in the imagination.

The idea found it's way into this new body of work. My images are not about places or things: I interpret the landscape to a point and then let the painting take over. It's experimental and the result is not always what it seems. Look for the signs. Links to the imagination. Or the places that aren't quite real.” Sue Favinger Smith, Redmond, Oregon 2009.

Opening Reception will be held during Bend's First Friday Gallery Walk, Friday November 6, from 5 to 9pm. Live Music by Erin Cole-Baker, whose acoustic mix of bluegrass, jazz, blues and rock is about finding honesty in the journey of life. The evening will be filled with good art, good music, refreshments and lively conversation.

About Sue Favinger Smith: Sue Smith began her award-winning career at the age of 50, earning an art degree from Oregon State University and graduating with the Distinguished Student-Department of Art Award. Since then she has focused on oil painting, exploring the techniques and color used by painters who inspire her. She is best known for her poured oil "Elements" paintings, luminous landscapes and the semi-abstract Mesa Series...but she has recently added still life and the figurative Ancestor Series to her painting oeuvre. Residing in Central Oregon, Sue has participated in national and regional exhibitions, solo and three-person shows, and is a member of Women Artists of the West, Oil Painters of America, and the prestigious National Association of Women Artists, the oldest professional arts organization for women in the country. About Kathy Deggendorfer: Kathy Deggendorfer lives on a cattle and hay ranch just outside of Sisters, Oregon. Inspired by the color, pattern and texture of her surroundings, she creates vibrant and colorful watercolor paintings. Whimsical images of flowers and ranch life fill the paintings with color and life. "Folks tell me they just feel happy when they look at my work-- that makes me happy." Raised in Portland, Oregon, in a clothing manufacturing family, she says ,"Sewing skills skipped a generation with me... but I love fabric. I like to call my creations 'Painters Quilts.' I can prowl around the rounders full of prints at the Stitchin' Post with the best of 'em... I just put my fabrics in with a paintbrush." Kathy's collaborative work with master quilter, Tonye Belinda Phillips, is another fun combination of painted image and textile interpretation. Kathy is currently working on a project about Oregon Specialty Farming and sustainable farm practices. This project takes her out into the fields of Oregon farms to paint and learn about what makes Oregon agricultural practices and people unique. Trips to the cattle ranches of Eastern Oregon and vineyards of the Willamette Valley provide her with plenty of rich and colorful images. Kathy's work is collected throughout the Pacific Northwest and reaches out to all corners of the United States. Kathy was selected to create the official Oregon 2008 ornament for the White House Christmas Tree. Represented by High Desert Gallery of Central Oregon, she has pieces in the permanent collection at Redmond Airport, 2007 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show Poster Artist, she wrote and illustrated a children's book for St. Charles Medical Center, and her work has been translated into clothing and fabric for Columbia Sportswear. In 2005, Kathy was awarded 'Citizen of the Year' in Sisters Oregon for her contributions to the community and the arts. High Desert Frameworks!, the award-winning custom picture framing studio for High Desert Gallery is please to announce their first annual Holiday Greeting Card Charity Sale and Auction, The event kicks off at High Desert Gallery in Bend Oregon during the Bend Gallery Association First Friday Art Walk on Friday, December 4, 2009 from 5-9pm. A select group of professional Central Oregon artists have created 4”x 6” and 5” x 7” holiday greeting cards. High Desert Frameworks has custom framed each greeting card and will offer the works of art for a “Buy-It-Now” price or the works can be purchased through a silent auction bidding process. At least thirty percent of the sales goes to a Central Oregon not-for-profit charity of the artist's choice.

Bend Oregon, November 11, 2009: High Desert Gallery of Central Oregon is pleased to announce the opening exhibition and sale of work by nationally known Oregon artist, Cristina Acosta in our Bend Oregon fine art gallery. High Desert Gallery in Bend is located on the retail ground floor of the Oxford Hotel at 10 NW Minnesota Avenue at Lava. The Gallery is open daily from 10am to 6pm and will be open late on Bend First Friday Art Walk, Friday December 4th 5-9pm and Saturday December 12th 4-9pm for the Minnesota Avenue Holiday Block Party. Great art, refreshments and holiday cheer will be served. A Central Oregon favorite, Bellavia, will perform their live jazz renditions at the gallery's First Friday Art Walk event.

About Cristina Acosta: Cristina's career has included: A two-year stint as a billboard mural and lettering artist. Five years teaching college art classes. Nine years as an artisan tile designer & production artist for her nationally distributed signature line of ceramic tile during the 1990’s, life long love of the arts and more. Her artistry is featured in a variety of books and magazines, including her successful art book, Paint Happy! (North Light Books, ©2002,2004). She illustrated the children’s book, When Woman Became the Sea (Beyond Words Pub., ©1998) and contributed to many other books and periodicals including Artist Magazine, Pure Inspiration, Better Homes and Gardens, House Beautiful, Latina magazine, Latina Style, Good Housekeeping, and Woman’s Day home design publications. Cristina continually paints and writes from her studio at her home in the rain-shadow of the Cascade Mountains. She creates three distinct series of paintings: Paint Happy series, Hispanic Heritage series (Madonnas) and her oils including her Animal Spirit series. Despite the different styles, her work is typified by her lush use of color, dynamic design and the presence of joy. Museums, galleries and collectors nationwide collect and exhibit her work.
