Austin North
Monday, February 13, 2012, 5 – 7pm

In the category of “mothering,” legal sex neutrality crashes with social default regimes to construct women as “mothers,” who serve as primary parents, and men as “fathers.” Institutions burden women with parenting responsibilities reflexively and without compensation, while men are presumed incapable or uninterested in performing these caretaking duties.

In his article, published in the Winter 2012 volume of the Harvard Journal of Law & Gender, Darren Rosenblum advances a theory of unsexing to characterize the peeling away of rights and statuses from biological sex. Professor Rosenblum's article describes how international law both affirms this sexed vision of parenting and suggests the path toward an unsexed future, with particular focus on parenting leave policies in Sweden.

In conjunction with an online colloquium on http://harvardjlg.com, this conference will feature Darren Rosenblum discussing his piece, with responses from Professor Duncan Kennedy (HLS), Professor Mary Anne Case (U. Chicago), and Professor Elizabeth Emens (Columbia).

Join Harvard Journal of Law & Gender for this exciting and innovative approach to legal scholarship, combining traditional print with online discussion by scholars across the country and this dynamic in-person discussion. Reception to follow.

Co-sponsored by Harvard Journal of Law & Gender, ACS, LAMBDA, Womens Law Association, Harvard Law Students for Reproductive Justice, and the Harvard Journal of Civil Rights-Civil Liberties, with generous funding from the Milbank Fund and the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy.

Sponsor: Harvard Journal of Law & Gender
Calendar Option: The event is open to the general public as well as to the HLS community (Public Calendar)

Mate Choice in an Online Dating Site

Berkman Center for Internet & Society, 23 Everett St, 2nd Floor
Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 12:30 – 1:45pm

The 21st century has witnessed a transformation of the American dating scene: Online dating—previously a marginalized social practice—has skyrocketed in popularity to become one of the primary ways that singles meet and mate today. While clearly an empirical topic worthy of study in its own right, data from online dating sites also offer an unprecedented opportunity to address questions of longstanding interest to social scientists.

In his talk, Kevin Lewis, Berkman Center Fellow, will introduce a new social network dataset based on behavioral data from a popular online dating site; discuss the utility of these data for understanding the shape of contemporary stratification systems; and provide a first look at the dynamics of inequality, exclusion, and gender asymmetry that characterize the early stages of mate choice.

More details: cyber.law.harvard.edu…

Sponsor: Berkman Center for Internet & Society
Contact E-mail: ashar@cyber.law.harvard.edu
More info: cyber.law.harvard.edu…

Discussing Rape Law in the Classroom

Wasserstein 1023
Wednesday, February 15, 2012, 12 – 1pm

Every semester the WLA hosts a lunchtime events designed to prepare 1L students for the Rape Law unit in Criminal Law. Often these class discussions become very heated, as they deal with a subject that can be deeply personal. Rape is one crime where, statistically speaking, there is a high likelihood of survivors in the classroom. Due to this dynamic, we host this event and provide resources to those who would find them helpful. All students, male and female, are welcome.
