John Seely Brown is a prolific author, speaker, educator, and self-described "Chief of Confusion," focusing on helping people ask the right questions and make sense out of a constantly changing world. He is the independent co-chairman of Silicon Valley-based Deloitte Center for Edge Innovation, which helps senior executives make sense of and profit from emerging opportunities on the edge of business and technology, and is also a visiting scholar at USC.

The purpose of this Jewish Nurses Conference is to present current evidence to help Jewish and Non-Jewish nurses, administrators, and managers gain insight and knowledge related to work behaviors and relationships with each other, to understand Orthodox Jewish end of life care, and to become familiar with Orthodox Jewish customs, practices, and how they relate to employment and employment law.
OBJECTIVES
-Enable the learner to expand a repertoire of successful work related behaviors through the sharing of life stories and experiences with Jewish nurses in small group discussions.
-Expand the learner’s knowledge of parameters and applications of Jewish law (halacha) in end of life care and other health care scenarios from the perspective of families, patients and caregivers.
-Inform the learner of employment law related options for nurses and managers.
-Enhance managers' and administrators' familiarity with Orthodox Jewish Nurses as employer and patient resources.
-Enhance non-Jewish nurses’, managers’, and administrators’ knowledge of Orthodox Jewish customs and practices

Deborah Washington, PhD, RN, Director of Diversity for Patient Care Services, Massachusetts General Hospital
Joy Jacobson, MFA, and James Stubenrauch, MFA, Senior Fellows at the Center for Health, Media & Policy, and co-directors, Narrative Writing for Healthcare Professionals.

PURPOSE
One way that nursing reflects society at large is in its struggles with cultural, racial, sexual, and other dimensions of human diversity—differences that could enrich all our lives if we embraced them unreservedly. When people feel marginalized by being different in some way from others in their personal and professional lives, it can stifle their personal growth, creativity, and happiness. This full-day workshop in New York City will give nurses as clinicians, faculty, researchers, administrators, and students an opportunity to explore their experiences with personal, professional, and societal diversity and marginalization.
The primary tool for this interactive workshop will be prompted writing, reading, and sharing of reflective narratives focused on questions of diversity and marginalization. (Nurses at all levels of writing skill and experience are welcome.) The aims of the workshop include examining one's personal experiences with diversity and marginalization, while exploring strategies for bringing to one's community, workplace, or school a raised awareness of these issues.
It will also provide experiences in using reflective narrative writing as a process of discovery and a tool for self-care. The approach to this workshop will encourage participants to uncover the meaning of specific experiences, engage in thoughtful discussions about those experiences, work with others to create a shared understanding of diversity, and generate ideas for positive actions at personal, professional, and institutional levels.
OBJECTIVES
1. Explore issues of diversity and marginalization in one's own and others' personal and professional lives.
2. Identify strategies for increasing awareness and positive actions around diversity and marginalization in academic, clinical, and professional settings.
3. Apply the benefits of narrative writing and journaling as a tool for continued reflection on issues of diversity and marginalization to turn these into opportunities for personal and organizational growth.
