Tombs, Temples, Palaces and Tea: The Social Roles of Ceramics in Asia

Sunday, May 11, 2008, 9am – 5pm

Event type: Arts & Crafts
Description: This exhibition explores the practical and social uses of ceramics in Asia in places such as tombs, temples, palaces. Asian ceramics are the most varied in the world; they have been used for vessels, ritual objects, sculpture and architectural ornament. They are also unrivaled in technical quality and sheer volume. They lay at the very heart of the tea ceremony in Korea and Japan, while in the Islamic world ceramic tiles were indispensable to architectural facades.
Venue: Middlebury College Mahaney Center for the Arts Museum of Art Robert F.
