Learning From Nature is a joint course with Indiana University Bloomington. This class is designed to immerse students in the study of permaculture in a beautiful setting. Students will be living as a community and spending a great deal of time outdoors during the course, enjoying many opportunities to engage with the natural world. This course is ideal for small farmers, gardeners, college students, and homeowners looking to reduce energy costs.
The course takes place at White Violet Center for Eco-Justice, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. WVC has 320 acres of certified organic agriculture cropland, a 5 acre garden dedicated to a Community Supported Agriculture program, bee hives, more than 50 alpacas, a swimming lake, a nature trail and woods for walking, fire pits for evening conversations and playing music, outdoor recreation and eating areas, and more. Students will be staying in dorm rooms and classes will be held both indoors and on WVC’s farm.
Students must complete an application and be accepted to register for this course. Enrollment for non-IU students is limited, so early application is strongly suggested. The course will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Course runs May 19-June 2, 2013.

Two new exhibitions at The Kinsey Institute

April 12 through August 30, 2013. The Kinsey Institute is offering two shows this spring and summer, both featuring a wide range of artworks from our permanent collection. Face Value explores the various ways that artists utilize the portrait, an art form that has existed for millennia, for the exploration of individual identity and experience. Casual Encounters, in the institute’s Corridor Gallery, takes a look at intimate yet anonymous sexual interactions, as depicted by European and American artists from the 18th century to the present day.

The Kinsey Institute Gallery is open 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm Monday thru Friday or by appointment. Admission is free.

Due to adult content, visitors should be 18 years of age or older, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. Guided and self-guided tours of 6 to 15 people of The Kinsey Institute may be scheduled by calling 812-855-7686.

Applications are being accepted for the Court Appointed Special Advocates summer training to be held from June 4 to July 11, 2013. This free training will meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. The application deadline is May 24th.

Monroe County CASA is a 501c3 non-profit, volunteer-powered program which provides representation in juvenile court for child victims of physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect. The program recruits, screens, trains, and supervises adult community members who volunteer their time to serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs), with full legal authority set forth by the State of Indiana. CASAs provide advocacy to child victims to ensure that they remain at the forefront of the court proceedings and find a safe, permanent home as quickly as possible.

1. Go to the uReport portal at bloomington.in.gov… (or, from the City’s main web page, click the gray and orange box in the right column).
2. In the center, expand the “Streets, Parking & Traffic” section.
3. Click “Close Calls”.
4. Fill in the information, and click “Submit”.

Two new exhibitions at The Kinsey Institute

April 12 through August 30, 2013. The Kinsey Institute is offering two shows this spring and summer, both featuring a wide range of artworks from our permanent collection. Face Value explores the various ways that artists utilize the portrait, an art form that has existed for millennia, for the exploration of individual identity and experience. Casual Encounters, in the institute’s Corridor Gallery, takes a look at intimate yet anonymous sexual interactions, as depicted by European and American artists from the 18th century to the present day.

The Kinsey Institute Gallery is open 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm Monday thru Friday or by appointment. Admission is free.

This exhibit presents objects used in preparing food and food service from different areas of the world. It breaks down into two categories: what the viewer perceives as familiar, such as plates, cups, and dishes, and what is unfamiliar, such as a Peruvian corn toaster and an Ecuadorian grater.

The goal of the exhibit is to look at what other cultures have come up with as solutions to help them in cooking or eating food, allowing the viewer to make comparisons to the solutions that are similar or dissimilar to their own. Museum hours are Tuesday - Friday 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Saturday - Sunday 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Closed Mondays and major holidays.

This exhibit presents a survey of Charles Cushman's archive of photographs, the largest known body of early color photographs by a single photographer, 14,500 in all, most shot on vivid, color-saturated Kodachrome stock.

From 1938-1968, Cushman--a sometime businessman and amateur photographer with an uncanny eye for everyday detail--travelled constantly, shooting everything he encountered as he ventured from New York to New Orleans, Chicago to San Francisco, and everywhere in between.

His photos include portraits, ethnographic studies, agricultural and industrial landscapes, movie sets and media events, children playing, laborers working, and thousands of street scenes, all precisely documented in time and place. The result is a chronicle of an era almost never seen, or even envisioned, in color.
