"Little Gem" bu Elaine Murphy

Inis Nua Theatre Company
First Baptist Church
1636 Sansom Street
Philadelphia, PA
Wednesday, February 8, 2012, 8 – 9:30pm

From Tom Reing, artistic director: Written by Dublin native Elaine Murphy, this is simply one of the best plays I've seen out of Ireland in the last ten years. As one of our board members recently said, "it's a dynamite play: smart, with the perfect amount of naughty." Delivering the smarts will be the amazing trio of Maureen Torsney-Weir, Corinna Burns and Sarah Van Auken. This is Maureen's first play with us, but Corinna was last seen in Pumpgirl, and Sarah debuted in Dublin by Lamplight. I couldn't ask for a more talented trio to inaugurate our new stage. This Philadelphia premiere-running for three weeks, until February 26-is in great hands not only with this company of amazing actors, but also under the talented direction of my good friend Kathryn MacMillan.

Price - Low: $20
Price - High: $25
Directed By: Tom Reing
Written By: Elaine Murphy
Age Range: Adults
Ticket Phone: 215-454-9776
Ticket Web Link: inisnuatheatre.org

Philadelphia Irish Center Slow Session

The Irish Center
6815 Emlen Street
Philadelphia, PA 19119
Friday, February 10, 2012, 8 – 9pm

Summary: The Phila Ceili Group and the Irish Center will sponsor a monthly session at the Irish Center on Friday night from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. The Phila Ceili Group will sponsor a slow session from 8 to 9 p.m. the first Friday of the month and the regular session will be sponsored by the Irish Center and runs from 9 to 11 p.m., The slow session is a traditional Irish session in all ways except one: the tempo. We will play common session tunes that are normally played at fast tempos at a slower pace, so that beginning and intermediate players can more join in. Also great for experienced players who are picking up another instrument!, Since this is a traditional Irish session we will not use any sheet music. It will be helpful to bring some type or recorder (tape or MP3) to practice the tunes we went over at home.

The resulting music crosses boundaries in a tour-de-force of world-class guitar-playing, sensuous singing, fiddle-playing of heart-melting lyricism and powerful, passionate harping., Máire Ní Chathasaigh, Máire is Ireland’s most influential harper. As a teenager in County Cork in the early 1970s she invented an entirely new style that quickly became the norm amongst both her contemporaries and the younger generation of harpers. A multiple All-Ireland and Pan-Celtic winner, in 1985 she recorded the very first harp album to concentrate on traditional Irish dance music. The New Strung Harp – “a mile-stone in Irish harp music” (The Irish Examiner). In 2001 she received Irish music’s most prestigious award, that of Traditional Musician of the Year – Gradam Cheoil TG4 – “for the excellence and pioneering force of her music, the remarkable growth she has brought to the music of the harp and for the positive influence she has had on the young generation of harpers”., Chris Newman, Chris is a “brilliant English master of the acoustic guitar” (Daily Telegraph) and a prolific composer, arranger and record producer. He bagan to play guitar at the age of four and at fourteen played his first paid gig in a folk club. He’s played with luminaries of many musical worlds: folk (harper Máire Ní Chathasaigh and Boys of the Lough), jazz (Stéphane Grappelli and Diz Disley) and comedy (Fred Wedlock) – receiving a silver disc for producing Fred’s hit Oldest Swinger in Town. He and Máire have toured together worldwide since 1988. The Daily Telegraph described their sixth CD, FireWire as “A gorgeously complex mix of the lovely and lyrical and the positively jubilant by two top-notch players. A former member of the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra, her rare ability to play both classical and traditional music wiht equal profciency has inspired a number of composers to write orchestral pieces for her. Nollaig is herself a prolific composer. She’s been a featured soloist in over 20 feature films. Her solo album The Music of What Happened garnered universal critical acclaim and she’s recorded two duo albums with Arty McGlynn., Arty McGlynn, Arty is one of the best-known and most influential musicians in Ireland. Born in Omagh, Co. Tyrone, he was raised in a family steeped in traditional music and began playing guitar at eleven. Touring professionally with showbands and rock bands throughout Ireland, the UK and the USA from the age of fifteen, his playing soon came under the influence of Wes Montgomery and Thelonius Monk. He later revived his interest in Irish traditional music and in 1979 recorded McGlynn’s Fancy, the first recording of the guitar played in an authentic traditional Irish style and a classic of the traditional music world. He subsequently became one of the most sought after musicians in the country, as a session musician and a member of Planxty, Patrick Street, De Danann. Arty is equally in demand as a live performer, recording artist and producer.

Fiddler JESSE SMITH in Concert, FEB 11

Coatesville Traditional Irish Music Series
@ the Coatesville Cultural Society
143 E. Lincoln Highway
Coatesville, PA 19320
Saturday, February 11, 2012, 8pm

JESSE SMITH is a young American musician who grew up in Baltimore, immersed in the vibrant Irish music tradition of that city. Both of his parents are musicians and he started fiddling at an early age, studying with the renowned player and teacher Brendan Mulvihill. In 1998 he moved to Ireland, where he toured with the Irish band Danú. His CD Jigs and Reels (2002) was among the Top Ten Traditional CDs of the Year cited by columnist Earle Hitchner in “The Irish Echo”. The following year brought a collaborative release (with flute player Harry Bradley and guitarist/pianist John Blake) entitled The Tap Room Trio, one of the best recordings of Irish traditional music in recent years. Praise is now being garnered by his recent release, The Ewe with the Crooked Horn (2010), recorded with accordionist Colm Gannon and John Blake.

Jesse has attained a level of competence, skill and artistic judgment usually associated with older and more mature musicians. His playing is understated and tasteful, not just for show. His bowing, particularly on hornpipe triplets, is quite remarkable. An interest in the Irish music of the 78rpm era is seen in his choice of material, and his concerts always include classics from the repertoires of the great Sligo fiddle trinity: Michael Coleman, James Morrison and Paddy Killoran.

Price - Low: $15
Price - High: $18
Age Range: All Ages
Ticket Phone: 610-486-2220
Ticket Web Link: www.ctims.info
Contact: Frank Dalton
More info: www.ctims.info

"Little Gem" bu Elaine Murphy

Inis Nua Theatre Company
First Baptist Church
1636 Sansom Street
Philadelphia, PA
Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 7 – 8:30pm

Friday, February 17, 2012, 8 – 9pm

"Little Gem" bu Elaine Murphy

Inis Nua Theatre Company
First Baptist Church
1636 Sansom Street
Philadelphia, PA
Sunday, February 19, 2012, 2 – 3:30pm

Free Fiddle Workshop with Heather Martin Bixler

Philips Autograph Library
Philips Memorial Building
700 South High Street
West Chester, PA
Sunday, February 19, 2012, 4 – 5:30pm

eather Martin Bixler is a classically-trained violinist who became very interested in Irish music about ten years ago, and she began to seriously study it, in the same way that she approached her classical studies. She has studied and performed all over North America, Europe, and Asia. A graduate of Indiana University and The Juilliard school, she has performed in many major concert halls including Musikverein in Vienna, Carnegie Hall in New York, as well as concert halls in Tokyo, Barcelona, and Mexico City. In 1992 Heather won a first violin position in the Orquestra Ciutat de Barcelona in Spain and since then has held concertmaster positions with South Dakota Symphony and Orquesta Sinfonica de la Mineria in Mexico City, and has worked as a substitute violinist with New York Orchestras including The New York Philharmonic, New York City Ballet, and American Symphony. Most recently Heather has been the concertmaster of Garden State Philharmonic in New Jersey. In addition, Heather has appeared on such singers’ videos as Maria Carey, Shania Twain, Jewel, and Donna Summer.

Heather’s fascination with traditional Irish music led her to work with fiddle players in New York City. In 2006 Heather medaled in the senior slow airs at the All-Ireland Fleadh (music competition) in Donegal, Ireland. She is in demand as a performer and teacher of Irish music at various festivals throughout the United States, Canada, and Ireland. She performs regularly as a solo fiddler and is also a recorded guest on several prominent Irish musicians’ recordings.

The workshop series is sponsored by Kildare's Irish Pubs. Bixler will lead the session at Kildare's West Chester at 18-22 Gay Street.

For his contributions to Scottish folk music, he has been inducted into the Scots Traditional Music Hall of Fame and in 2007 was awarded an MBE by Queen Elizabeth for services to traditional music., Archie was born in Glasgow into a large singing family. His father’s appreciation of many musical styles (opera, vaudeville, traditional ballads) and his mother’s Gaelic speaking family from the Outer Hebrides strongly influenced his musical development and the lyrical quality of his singing and songwriting. He first became interested in the folk revival during the Skiffle era of the late 1950s and recordings of the Weavers later profoundly influenced his approach to music and political outlook., During the British TV folk boom of the 1960s and 70s he was part of an Edinburgh scene that also included Robin Williamson, Clive Palmer and Mike Heron, and the Incredible String Band and was an early guitar colleague of Bert Jansch. In addition to his solo work, he played as a duo with Dundee musician Allan Barty, worked as a backing musician and arranger/producer for Tommy Makem, Liam Clancy, and Silly Wizard., After spending the 1980s working primarily in documentary radio, he returned to the recording studio during what he describes as one of his most creative songwriting periods, touring North America with Garnet Rogers, English guitarist John Renbourn, and Bert Jansch.
"Little Gem" bu Elaine Murphy

Inis Nua Theatre Company
First Baptist Church
1636 Sansom Street
Philadelphia, PA
Monday, February 20, 2012, 7 – 8:30pm
