The Irish. . .And How They Got That Way, A Play By Frank McCourt

Walnut Street Theatre
825 Walnut Street
Philadelphia, PA 19107
Sunday, May 4, 2008, 7:30 – 9:30pm

Pulitzer Prize winner Frank McCourt (Angela's Ashes) knows first-hand what it's like for an Irishman to pursue the American dream. All aboard for his musical journey through time! As McCourt indulges lustily in good song and good humor, he weaves together an irreverent but affectionate history of some of the men and women who helped make America great in this off-Broadway hit. This raucous celebration of all things Irish is a jovial, heartbreaking and inspiring tribute. Raise a glass and let's salute those who have dreams for a better life.

Tickets are $28 and available through the Walnut Street Theater by calling 215-574-3550, 10am-10pm, or Tickemaster at 215-336-1234, or by going to the website www.walnutstreettheatre.org.
The Irish. . .And How They Got That Way, A Play By Frank McCourt

Walnut Street Theatre
825 Walnut Street
Philadelphia, PA 19107
Sunday, May 11, 2008, 7:30 – 9:30pm

Friday, May 16, 2008, 7:30 – 9:30pm

In this show Tyrrell effortlessly traces his journey from early childhood set against a backdrop of famine, revolution, Fenianism and penal servitude for life in Australia and his great escape from there to the USA., O’Reilly was born in 1844. He joined the British cavalry in 1866 with the purpose of converting the Irishmen in his regiment to Fenianism. He was tried for treason and sentenced to penal servitude for life in Fremantle penal colony in Australia. He fell in love with his overseer’s daughter and she with him it was an intimate love affair and it was even rumoured locally though without substantiation that she became pregnant by him. Rejected by Jesse he tried to commit suicide but was found before he could succeed. He escaped the penal colony aboard an American whaling ship. While aboard the Gazelle he went on a whale hunt and nearly lost his life when the whale smashed the boat., He settled in Boston and became the editor and part-owner of The Pilot newspaper. Joseph Pulitzer commissioned him to write a poem for the unveiling of the Statue of Liberty. He championed Native and African American rights and spoke out against anti-Semitism. He devised the plan that rescued the other Fenians he left behind in Fremantle prison on board an American whaling ship the Catalpa., Songs in the show allow Tyrrell connect history of the 19th century and modern times in a seamless way. Songs are drawn from a wide variety of sources: Oscar Wilde, Francis Ledwidge, Bob Dillon, Louise Mc Neice, John Lennon, Skin The Goat. and many more. These are an integral part of the tale and illustrate how O’Reilly was way ahead of his time, a majestic human being., Tyrrell’s love of traditional music is very much to the fore as the story is cleverly tied together with jigs, reels, a march, and a few slow airs. Using an array of instruments, Seán weaves effortlessly between narrative, instrumental and song., This show will be touring all the places that O’Reilly visited in his short life. Dublin, London, Fremantle, Liverpool, Philadelphia, New York and Boston. He lectured on Irish music and poetry to audiences as large as 4000 at the following Syracuse, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Chicago, Butte, Seattle-Tacoma, Portland, Sacramento; and San Francisco.
Irish Philadelphia Story 1:
Irish Philadelphia Story 2:
Irish Philadelphia Story 3:
Irish Philadelphia Story 4:
Irish Philly Photo Essay 1:
Irish Philly Photo Essay 2:
Irish Philadelphia Podcast 1:

Sean Tyrrell - Cry of a Dreamer

The Irish Center
6815 Emlen Street
Phila., PA 19119
Saturday, May 17, 2008, 8pm

Sean Tyrell was surrounded by music all his life. During the 60’s he performed in Galway’s folk clubs, honing his skills and rubbing shoulders with a host of celebrated musicians. He emigrated in 1968 and slid into the folk club scene in Greenwich Village. The 70’s took him west to San Francisco and a diet of Irish music sessions. Here his reputation as a singer of songs took root. He returned to Ireland in the late 70’s and continued composing, but seldom played in public. In 1978 he accepted employment with the University of Galway, in the heart of the Burren in County Clare. It's hard to avoid music in this part of Ireland and soon Sean was lured back into the scene. Eventually swapping the Burren for Bell Harbour, close to the Galway border, Sean divided his time between mussel farming and his music. He became fascinated by the poem 'The Midnight Court' (all 1,206 lines), written in the 17th century by Brian Merriman. He became possessed with a desire to set this work to music. The feat was achieved with much success when the Druid Theatre in Galway staged Sean Tyrrell's 'traditional music opera'. Sean soon embarked on a solo CD project, "Cry of a Dreamer”. The album was released in 1994 and greeted with great acclaim, voted Best Folk Album of the Year by Folk Roots and Hotpress. In 1996 the CD was picked up by Hannibal/Rykodisc and selected for a Spotlight Review by Billboard Magazine calling Sean "the genuine article!" In 1999 he released his second solo effort, "The Orchard". Sean has toured Ireland, England, the Continent, the US and Australia as a solo act and with some of the luminaries of Irish traditional music, including Kevin Glackin and Ronan Brown, Davy Spillane, Paddy Keenan, and Tommy Peoples.

Event type: Concert
Price - Low: $13
Price - High: $15
Age Range: All Ages
Ticket Phone: 856 236 2717
Ticket Web Link:
Contact: Marianne MacDonald
More info: www.philadelphiaceiligroup.org…

The Irish. . .And How They Got That Way, A Play By Frank McCourt

Walnut Street Theatre
825 Walnut Street
Philadelphia, PA 19107
Sunday, May 18, 2008, 7:30 – 9:30pm

The Swell Season

Tower Theatre
69th Street
Upper Darby, PA
Tuesday, May 20, 2008, 8 – 11pm

You may know them as the star-crossed almost-lovers from the movie, "Once," which won stars Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglov an Oscar for best movie theme ("Falling Slowly"). Hansard, best known for his work in the Irish group, The Frames, is playing to sold-out houses with Irglov and several other musicians as The Swell Season. And, alas, the Tower Theater is sold out, though scalper tickets still seem to be available at outrageous prices.
Pipe and Whistle Workshops with Paddy Keenan

The Irish Center
Carpenter and Emlen Streets
Philadelphia, PA
Thursday, May 22, 2008, 5 – 11pm

From Frank Dalton:
The amazing piper Paddy Keenan, in town for a concert on May 21, will be giving two workshops the next night at The Irish Center. The first workshop will be for whistle and low whistle players, and he will follow the Teach a Tune format. Unless he doesn't… The second workshop will be for pipers, and will be a great opportunity to observe and ask about specific techniques, opinions and choices of this Master Piper. To make it easy for people to come out on a weeknight, we're going to lay out a dinner and open the doors at 6:00pm. There will be hamburgers, chicken, sausage and some less important things. Likely a session will start after dinner, and continue thru the evening. The session will go `til it's over. Paddy Keenan is NOT part of the session.

The whistle players will have a workshop from about 6:45 to 7:35 and the pipers will have theirs from 7:45 to 8:35.

Cost for each workshop will be $30 and the cost for the dinner only will be $5. No need to attend either workshop or dinner, if you just want to come to the session or to listen.

NOTE: Each workshop will be limited to ten people; to secure a spot prepayment is required.

To register for the workshops please contact:
John Donnelly
3818 Sharp Street
Phila., PA 19127

cell (215) 768 - 1846
Donnelly_386@msn.com
