text. \n\nAmanda Kindregan is a painter and printmaker with a BFA in Pai

e linoleum and vinyl block printing\, and painting with gouache on paper
. Her influences come from the past: Picasso and Warhol for their painti

mid-century illustrators including Mary Blair and Hilary Knight. Ms. Kin
dregan lives in the beautiful Snoqualmie Valley with her husband and two

DESCRIPTION:STG Presents Wilco at The Paramount Theatre in Seattle on We
dnesday\, February 10\, 2010.\n\n“I have to say\, this was the most fun
I've ever had making a record\,” says Jeff Tweedy. “We worked really har
d\, but it was pretty joyous work\, and it came together quicker than an
y record I can remember.”\n\nThat sense of confidence and purpose is imm
ediately evident on Wilco (the album)\, the tenth release from one of th
e world’s most acclaimed and respected bands. The project represents the
full range of Wilco’s musical palette—from the driving opener “Wilco (t
he song)” to the delicate “You and I” (a duet with Feist)\, from the ten
se\, menacing “Bull Black Nova” to the breezy “You Never Know.” The elev
en songs on Wilco (the album) reveal a group fifteen years into its care
er and at the peak of its game.\n\nThis album is the follow-up to 2007’s
Sky Blue Sky\, which was the first Wilco recording with the band’s curr
ent line-up: Tweedy (guitar and vocals)\; John Stirratt (bass)\; Nels Cl
ine (guitar)\; Glenn Kotche (drums)\; Pat Sansone (multiple instruments)
\; and Mikael Jorgenson (keyboards). Sky Blue Sky was the group’s highes
t-charting release ever\, and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock A
lbum. Its stripped-down sound was the result of a new\, very deliberate
recording strategy by this ever-changing collective.\n\n“Sky Blue Sky ha
d a bit of a purity complex\,” says Tweedy. “We were trying to keep the
overdubs to a minimum\, and we proved we could do it. I felt liberated b
y that\, so this time we thought\, let's reincorporate the other ways we
know how to use a studio.”\n\n“After Sky Blue Sky\, there was a concert
ed effort to explore what our current line-up could do with more studio
craft\,” says Stirratt. “We were very conscious that we wanted to introd
uce a more dense soundscape.”\n\nIn addition to knowing that they wanted
to revisit the possibilities of studio recording\, the members of Wilco
were also energized by a series of shows they performed in Chicago in F
ebruary of 2008\, during which they played through their full catalogue
\, over the course of five nights. “Those residency shows gave the band m
ore sense of ownership\, especially for the members who weren't on the e
arlier records\,” says Tweedy. “I felt that this band actually did a bet
ter job of representing those songs than we were able to do when the rec
ords came out. What the band has always aspired to be is closer now than
it has been at any other time.”\n\nArmed with that sense of Wilco’s his
tory\, they began sketching out songs—until an invitation arrived that a
dded another spin to the new project. Crowded House/Split Enz singer/son
gwriter Neil Finn asked Tweedy\, Stirratt\, Kotche\, and Sansone to join
him\, Johnny Marr\, members of Radiohead\, and others in New Zealand\,
for an album he was recording to benefit Oxfam International.\n\n“Before
New Zealand\, the songs were pretty well rehearsed\, the shapes were pr
etty well set\, and about 90% of the lyrics were written—and I don't thi
nk I've ever had 50% done at that point\,” says Tweedy. “So when we fini
shed that other project\, we opted to stay in the Southern Hemisphere\,
in warm weather\, rather than going back to Chicago in the middle of win
ter.”\n\n“We had sketched everything out beforehand\,” says Stirratt. “T
hen when the four of us were in New Zealand\, we had the bedrock\, and w
e got the basic takes on analog.”\n\nTweedy says that the setting and th
e weather were inspiring\, but that there were also practical reasons th
at the foursome’s stay in New Zealand was so productive. “Any time your
home life is based in the city where you're recording\, it will insinuat
e itself and you'll get distracted by everyday life\,” he says. “Being r
esponsible only for a small bag of clothes\, and for feeding yourself\,
it facilitates a higher level of focus.”\n\nThe basic tracks from New Ze
aland were then taken back and fleshed out at the Loft\, Wilco’s home ba
se in Chicago. It was at this stage that the more elaborate arrangements
and overdubs were added—the sonic elements that give Wilco (the album)
its variety and breadth. “When you talk about using the studio for layer
ing\, people imagine some ornate pop record\, but you can also use it in
a lot of subtle ways as well\,” says Tweedy.\n\nBoth Tweedy and Stirrat
t pointed to the same song as a breakthrough in the sessions. “The demo
of ‘Deeper Down’ had the feeling of a cool template that we could work f
rom\,” says the bassist. “We had talked for a long time about constructi
ng a record on ProTools and then going back and playing it organically\,
and that’s kind of what we did.”\n\nStirratt also singles out the closi
ng track\, “Everlasting Everything\,” as both a personal favorite and a
central piece of the album. “That’s a successful example of taking a ver
y basic song and slowly crafting it into something that went beyond a si
mple little tune\,” he says. “That one is a high point for me.”\n\nThe s
moothness of the recording process\, however\, doesn’t mean that Tweedy
has lost the edge in his words. Wilco (the album) is largely a meditatio
n on survival\, persistence\, and mortality— sometimes defiant (“Wilco (
the song)”)\, sometimes despairing (“Country Disappeared”)\, sometimes b
emused (“You Never Know”).\n\n“As a lyricist\, and as a person who is tr
ying to navigate the world as best I can\, I’m certainly confronted with
a fear of the other shoe falling\, of the ambiguity and randomness we f
ace\,” says Tweedy. “These are existential crises I've been obsessing ab
out for the twenty years I've been writing songs.\n\n“I do think these s
ongs reflect a higher tolerance for that ambiguity\, a better ability to
cope with not knowing. That doesn't erase the anxiety of a song like ‘B
ull Black Nova’—if anything\, it makes it more palpable. But people will
probably think the balance is tilted toward a more optimistic side—and
I hope so. Isn't that what we would all prefer?”

DESCRIPTION:STG Presents Wild Beasts at Chop Suey in Seattle on Sunday\,
February 14\, 2010.\n \nTwo Dancers is the second Wild Beasts album. Co
-produced by the band and northern enigma Richard Formby in remote Norfo
lk earlier this year\, it follows 2008’s widely celebrated debut Limbo\,
Panto. The result is a record of tightrope-high drama\, put simply\, Tw
o Dancers finds the Wild Beasts on fire. Two Dancers is alive with its s
ense of possibility\, a sound that shimmers and sways in the band’s own
mercurial fashion. Sit back and listen with wonder at the thrill of it a
ll.\n\nTwo Dancers inhabits its own landscape\, as Tom Fleming says\, it
 ’s “a series of scenes… a big party\, the street outside later on\, or i
n a bedroom\, or desperately hungry and starving to death on a distant b
each.” The words ‘bedroom’\, ‘desperately’ and ‘party’ perfectly capture
the energies at work in Two Dancers. Equal to the euphoria and sense of
expectation is a feeling of helplessness. Hedonism can produce a long n
ight of the soul that burns on wired emotions\, and on what Fleming call
s “meaningless lust”. The album’s lead single Hooting And Howling\, fro
m its title down\, captures this perfectly. Consisting of a staring matc
h between guitarist Benny Little and lead vocalist Hayden Thorpe\, Hooti
ng and Howling is equal parts statement of intent\, and relentless eye c
ontact from a priapic state of mind. As with rest of the album\, it feel
s slightly delirious\, having turned itself inside out and finding a sta
te of unique musical grace.\n\nTwo Dancers is full of references to the
following: booty calls\, puckered lips\, bodies as perfect machines\, an
d dim-lit streets. Lyrically Two Dancers is equally energetic and ripe.
In All The King’s Men Fleming sings with purposeful intent about “Girls
from Rodean\, girls from Shipley\, from Hounslow\, girls from Whitby” a
s Hayden Thorpe’s falsetto soars with palpable anticipation. In this son
g\, as on the whole of the album\, Wild Beasts dare you to cut loose and
be seduced\, but you’ll join in on the disorientation along the way.\n
\nThe album’s shorter tracks\, the two minutes of Underbelly and When I’m
Sleepy\, allow delicious moments for pause. “We were trying to come up
with a way to describe it”\, as Fleming puts it “and the nearest we got
is erotic downbeat music”. Both are suggestive and abstract\, capturing
the fine art of feeling weird by shimmering in a twilight cadence. The
band’s performances throughout are pure liquid energy. The needlepoint d
rama is a result of the band eschewing studio hyper gloss by playing tog
ether in the room - “recorded live\, no over thinking” explains Thorpe.
The sound and sensation of a band\, to borrow the lyric of This Is Our L
ot\, ‘dancing late / like young reprobates’.\n\nAnd Two Dancers is indee
d a record made by real young men. As Thorpe\, owner of one of the most
wildly emotive falsettos observes\, “It’s such a cliché to be perceived
as being different. We’re seen as being outsiders\, and that makes us c
lose up the ranks even more.’’ In closing up the ranks Wild Beasts have
made a record of earthly pleasures that sounds thrillingly widescreen\,
open and in awe of life\; equally intoxicated and disturbed by the possi
 bilities of pleasure.
