Judy Hill: The Self Transparent, from the Collection of Driek and Michael Zirinsky

Combining the crackled surface of raku ceramic with the transparency of cold-mold glass, Portland-based artist Judy Hill creates figurative sculptures that have an unexpectedly charged psychological presence. With over 10 figurines and 4 works on paper on display, Hill reinforces the figures’ fragility through the exploitation of the medium’s inherent lightness and draws the viewer into the inner life of the figure.

What makes Washington different from anywhere else in the world? Is it the landscape? View some of the features, events, people and landscapes that make Washington distinct.

This exhibit not only identifies icons, but explores why and how these icons came to be symbols of our state. More than 65 items have been selected to represent Washington in this exhibit. View Ezra Meeker's covered wagon; see a chunk of concrete from Galloping Gertie; hear Dave Niehaus announce the Mariners 1995 American League Division Series win over the New York Yankees; look over representations of our plentiful natural resources, World's Fair materials, and much more.

See what Washington has given the country, and the world.

Organized by the Washington State History Museum. But archeologists and art historians find it useful to provide context and insight into the minds of those who inscribe personal messages in public places. View an original sleeping station with graffiti-inscribed canvases, and personal stories of young Americans traveling to the Vietnam War in Marking Time: Voyage to Vietnam. Visit us online for more information and specific exhibit hours. www.washingtonhistory.org Organized by the Vietnam Graffiti Project, in partnership with the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities.

Please join us for an evening of lecture and workshop as we discover how eating patterns affect emotional health. Learn which nutrients are essential in regulating health and wellness and how mindfulness supports optimal well-being.

THE PRESENTERS: Dan Rosen, PhD: In addition to being a Bastyr faculty member,
Dr. Rosen is a Licensed Psychologist, researcher, and founder of a nonprofit organization. He completed his post-doctoral training at Harvard Medical School in the Behavioral Medicine Program and has a specific interest in mindfulness and mind-body medicine.

Christy Hofsess, PhD: Dr. Hofsess is a Washington state Licensed Psychologist and Clinical Training Director/Assistant Professor for the integrative Master of Science in Nutrition and Clinical Health Psychology (MSNCHP) program at Bastyr. In this role, she teaches classes, supervises students and provides administrative oversight of the counseling experience for students enrolled in this dual-degree, health psychology-focused program. Her professional areas of interest are in supervision/training, the mind-body connection and multiculturalism.

Eliza Carlson: She is a graduate of both Bastyr's health psychology undergraduate program and its Master of Science in Nutrition and Clinical Health Psychology program. She currently practices her skills in nutrition and lifestyle counseling at The Vital Energy Center in Capitol Hill and Counseling for Success in Queen Anne while maintaining her relationship with Bastyr as adjunct faculty. With her patients, she uses food as medicine to create a foundation of physical health upon which the higher needs of emotional and spiritual well-being can be addressed.

For reservations and information, visit www.bastyr.edu.

ABOUT BASTYR UNIVERSITY
Bastyr University in Kenmore, Washington, is a nonprofit, accredited institution, internationally recognized as a pioneer in natural health arts and sciences education.
Playing for Change

The Seattle engagement features Mohammed Alidu, Clarence Bekker, Peter Bunetta, Grandpa Elliott, Mermans Kenkosenki, Louis Mhlanga, Juan Carlos Portillo, Jason Tamba and Titi Tsira.

The Playing For Change band features musicians from around the globe, many of whom appeared in the now ubiquitous "Stand By Me" video (which has been viewed on the internet more than 30 million times) including New Orleans based blues singer Grandpa Elliott and soul singer Clarence Bekker from Amsterdam. Momentum has continued to build for the project as founder Mark Johnson and the musicians of Playing For Change were just named "Persons of the Week" on ABC's "World News Tonight with Charlie Gibson."

Playing For Change has been one of 2009's most unlikely and startling cultural phenomenons. Hear Music's two-disc CD/DVD Playing For Change - Songs Around the World, released on April 28th, stunned the music industry selling over twenty-six thousand copies in its first week and landing at #10 on Billboard's Top 200 Pop chart. This remarkable and unpredicted popular response has been driven by tens of millions of video hits, countless blogs and pure viral communication between fans and followers. The project's deep emotional resonance, combined with the muscle of the internet and word-of-mouth has struck a profoundly enduring chord world-wide.

A story of hope, struggle, perseverance and joy,"PLAYING FOR CHANGE: Peace Through Music"is the documentary of this unparalleled international musical collaboration and its remarkable power of redemption.
