DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Arts presents\, Community Music Jam\, Mon
 days\, March 18 through May 20\, 6:30-9:00PM.\nIf you’ve ever played an
instrument\, either on your own or ”jammed” with other players\, partici
pated in an open mic\, or maybe you’ve sung in a choir\, in your shower
or had fun in a kareoke setting\, or perhaps you’ve wanted to try playin
g percussion or harmonica… This opportunity is for you! Everyone will le
arn and play songs together with no stress and no public audience – just
for the sheer fun of it!\n\nIn March of 2013 The Center for the Arts is
launching Community Music Jam!\, a FREE open session music program. Off
ering ten weekly sessions where local professional musicians will mentor
  participants\, ages 16 and up\, in playing keyboards\, guitars\, percus
sion and vocals within an informal band setting. Each session features a
different ”classic old school” song (country\, blues\, rock\, folk\, po
p\, etc.)\, which will be learned and played together as a group with rh
ythm parts\, solos\, vocals\, etc. Music equipment and some instruments
will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring their own instrum
ent if they have one.\n\nThese fun and interactive sessions are for peop
le who have at least a basic knowledge of an instrument\, but no prior e
xperience is needed if you want to sing or play percussion. This is a ch
ance to experience the joy of playing and making music with a group\, to
develop new connections with like minded folks\, hang out with pros\, a
nd just have a good time! Leading these structured “jam sessions” is a
team of local professional musicians: Lorraine Gervais (program coordina
tor)\, Kelly Fleming\, Tony Unger\, Craig Thomas and Ty Smith. They all
have years of professional experience performing both locally and nation
ally in many different music genres and venues.\n\nThe program is funded
by an exploring engagement grant from the James Irvine Foundation and i
s designed for those who cannot afford music classes or workshops\, the
purchase of instruments\, attendance at venue performances or otherwise
being engaged in the expression of music and performance due to financia
l constraints. We encourage everyone who might be in these categories to
apply! The Center will also be partnering with Nevada County agencies a
nd other non-profit organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters\, Bit
ney Prep High School\, Gold Country Community Center\, Hospitality House
\, NEO\, etc.\, to recommend their eligible participants for the program
. If you are an organization that serves those qualifying for Community
Music Jam and are interested in becoming one of our partner agencies ple
ase contact The Center.\n\nRegistration forms are available at The Cente
r for the Arts in downtown Grass Valley and also online at www.thecenter
forthearts.org to download and print. For planning purposes\, we ask tha
t the registration forms be dropped off at The Center before you attend
\, but drop-ins are welcome at each of the weekly sessions. Two 10-week p
rograms with a maximum of 60 participants at each session will be held f
or the initial two years of Community Music Jam. In the first year\, ses
sions will be held at The Center\, and in the second year the program wi
ll be taken to community centers\, and other neighborhood facilities.\n
\nThe Center’s primary goal is to build community through the arts\; we b
elieve that the arts are fundamental and that every person should have a
ccess. The reality is that for many in our county engaging in the arts i
s either beyond their economic reach or intimidating to take that first
step. By offering programs that are accessible\, free and fun\, we hope
to engage those who have not had exposure to the creative process. There
fore\, our focus is on providing new programs in the arts for the under
  - served\, and for those who are not traditionally coming to an arts ce
nter.\n\nWhile the program is partially funded with a grant from the Jam
es Irvine Foundation\, with additional funding from the Bill Graham Memo
rial Foundation of the Jewish Community Fund and Pacific Gas and Electri
c Company\, we are actively reaching out to potential donors to offset t
he expenses needed to fill the balance of $30\,000 needed to bring this
exciting program to our community. If you are interested is supporting C
ommunity Music Jam!\, please contact Julie Baker at jbaker@thecenterfort

DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Arts presents\, David Knopfler of Dire St
 raits with Harry Bogdanovs.\n\n\n\nBorn in Glasgow\, Scotland\, David K
nopfler grew up in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in the North of England. By fourt
een\, David was performing his own songs in folk clubs and having learn
ed guitar\, piano and drums in his childhood\, it’s not surprising to f
ind he’s mastered many of the instruments he uses on his recordings. De
spite a college degree\, he can’t recall any other aspirations beyond c
omposing and playing music. David founded Dire Straits\, and with brot
her Mark Knopfler recorded three albums\, touring the stadium circuit e
xtensively\, before resigning three years later to follow his own path
of independent\, singer-songwriter. For more than two decades he’s fait
hfully pursued his musical vision\, writing and producing his own music
on nine solo CDs to date.\n\nDavid creates songs of substance. They are
by turns deep and captivating\, elegant and thought provoking\, with c
lever\, gripping lyrics\, his exquisite sense of melody blending effort
lessly. More attentive listeners might even find themselves decoding th
e frequent buried references David includes. An example is found in “Je
richo” (from his 2002 album Wishbones)\, the words to which conceal titl
es of previous albums and songs.\n\nDavid Knopfler has been fortunate e
nough to reach a wide audience without compromising his art. While he’s
enjoyed the respect and admiration of his musical peers\, widespread c
ritical acclaim\, international awards and worldwide chart successes\, h
 e’s managed\, in his own country\, Britain\, to keep a profile so low a
s to be nearly invisible. He lives quietly in the English countryside\,
notching up an impressive list of writing credits.\n\nAn understated i
ntegrity and honesty define Knopfler in both his work and private life.
A family man and a lifelong member of organizations like Greenpeace\,
Amnesty International and Adopt a Minefield\, David has always made unc
ompromising life choices. “I don’t regard what I do as remotely glamoro
us. I write and record music because I completely love doing it\, despi
te any so called “celebrity status” that sometimes comes with the job.”
\n\nDavid’s first book of poetry entitled Blood Stones and Rhythmic Bea
sts was released in 2005 by Blackwing Books. The year 2006 saw the debut
of his 10th CD “Songs For the Siren”\, and in March 2009 his collection
   “Anthology:1983-2008″ was released.\n\nOctober 2011 brought the releas
e of David’s eleventh solo album. It’s an acoustic\, double CD with eigh
teen tracks including seven new songs – all recorded in September 2011 a
t Smokestack Studio in London with guitarist and co-producer Harry Bogda
novs. For anyone who has seen David and Harry live – this hybrid is much
like a live album performed in the same spirit\, but with the recording
advantages a studio has to offer. EID:170515

DESCRIPTION:ASiF Gallery @ Grass Valley Wine Company is proud to present
a solo exhibition of the works of Nevada City painter Betsy Lombard. T
his exhibit of mostly landscapes and abstracted landscapes depicts what
can be described as a truly palpable and 'poet-icized' experience of bei
ng in nature... The artist's sensitivity to color and light\, combined w
ith her bold decisive brush strokes brings about the raw pleasures of th
e natural world... the sensations of warmth and cool\, the relaxation th
at comes over us with the sounds of trickling streams and quivering leav
es... Betsy furnished us with a quote from an admirer of her work who wr
ites in a letter to her\, 'I love looking at your paintings... Somehow\,
I can feel the warmth of the sun or hear the creek you've painted. Some
times\, I even think I can feel the pleasure you felt as you painted. We
ird\, because even High Definition TV can't do that. You achieve even hi
gher definition-maybe by supplying just the crucial details necessary to
invite my imagination and memory to fill in the rest.' \n \nFor a previ
ew of Betsy Lombard's works go to www.betsylombard.com \nFor information
on upcoming ASiF Gallery @ GV Wine Company shows\, live music and event
s at the tasting room go to www.gvwineco.com \nBetsy Lombard's solo exh
ibition will be on display at the tasting room gallery now through July
 7th\, with an opening reception on June 14th from 6 - 8pm. \n \nThe tast
ing room gallery hours are Sunday through Monday 1-6pm\, and Thursday th
rough Sunday 1 - 7pm. Live music on Friday and Saturday nights features
a variety of excellent local and bay area musicians!\n \nASiF Gallery @
Grass Valley Wine Company represents a beautiful collaborative relation
ship designed to bring together the finest art and wine of Nevada County
! The tasting room gallery is curated by Amanda Paoletti\, owner\, dire
ctor of ASiF Studios\, bringing the highest caliber artists and seasoned
instructors to the forefront of our local community in an atmosphere th
at's all about collaboration! \n \nGrass Valley Wine Company is the co
operative tasting room and wine bar of three Nevada County wineries: Ben
t Metal\, Pilot Peak and Solune. Each of these are family owned and ope
rated wineries\, producing less than 3\,000 cases of wine annually. The
three winery owners' mutual vision for this downtown tasting room bring
s together the finest quality local wine\, music and art!\n \nThe Artist
s' Studio in the Foothills (ASiF) Gallery and Visual Arts Center is a 40
00 sq foot studio arts facility and is the creative home to over 20 arti
sts. The center houses 15 private and shared artists' studios\, 3 commun
ity classrooms and a gallery to promote local emerging artists. ASiF pro
motes local emerging artists throughout the year in themed gallery shows
and invites to public for seasonal open house events featuring fine art
demonstrations by visiting and resident instructors. ASiF offers art c
lasses and mentoring for adults and children in painting\, drawing\, pri
 ntmaking\, sculpture\, ceramics\, mosaics\, jewelry and mixed media arts
. \n \nThe large and fabulous gallery walls at GV Wine Company are just
what ASiF Gallery has dreamed of to expand its reach in promoting the s
everal hundred local artists represented in themed gallery shows at its
Idaho Maryland Road location since 2008. New ASiF Gallery @ Grass Valle

rious day's work. I want to touch the permission of the soul without de
fining anything. Art and poetry are the hands that hold me out to the w
orld to touch. In my writing I aspire to supersede opposites and separa
tion by rekindling the one moment known by my childhood's presence as Et

DESCRIPTION:The Center For The Arts Presents\, Singer/pianist Marcia Bal
l knows how to raise roofs and tear down walls with her infectious\, int
elligent and deeply emotional brand of southern boogie\, rollicking\, ro
adhouse blues and heartfelt ballads. Over the course of her three-decade
career\, Ball has earned a huge and intensely loyal following all over
the world. Her exquisite piano playing and passionate\, playful vocals f
use New Orleans and Gulf Coast RandB with Austin’s deep songwriting trad
ition into a sound No Depression described as “a little rock\, a lot of
roll\, a pinch of rhythm and a handful of blues.”\n\nBorn in Orange\, Te
xas\, and raised in Vinton\, Louisiana\, which was just across the Sabin
e River and the Texas border\, Ball comes from a long line of instrument
alists: her grandmother was a pianist\, her father was a composer\, and
her aunt was a pianist. Ball’s family was her first and strongest musica
l influence\, but local Cajun sounds and the soul music she heard on loc
al radio stations also played roles in developing her musical tastes.\n
\nBall began taking piano lessons at the age of five and would continue t
aking them until she was 14. She was a cheerleader and church choir memb
er in Vinton\, enthralled during the rare times when her father would ta
ke her to the Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans. At the age of 13\, she s
aw soul crooner Irma Thomas in concert in New Orleans\, and the then-pre
gnant but amazingly energetic Thomas left a lasting impression on Ball a
nd furthered her interest in performing.\n\nSmall state-border clubs wit
h names like the Texas Pelican Club\, Lou Ann’s\, and the Showboat Club
lined the roads on the outskirts of Vinton\, beckoning to the young Ball
to try her hand at performing. She took voice lessons at age 18 and\, w
hile studying English literature and journalism at Louisiana State Unive
rsity in the late 1960s\, was the lead singer of a band called Gum. In 1
970 she moved to Austin\, Texas.\n\nSince country music was in high dema
nd at the time\, the only jobs Ball could find in Austin were country gi
gs in what she termed “living room bands.” She infused her country songs
with as much blues and soul sounds as she could while still maintaining
the country music veneer. Austin audiences appreciated her eclectic mix
of musical sounds and styles\, and by 1972 Ball was playing in a popula
r local progressive country band called Freda and the Firedogs.\n\nBall
was established as a musician in Austin under her alias in the band\, Fr
eda. When Freda and the Firedogs broke up in 1974\, she founded her own
band the following year: Marcia and the Misery Brothers. She felt more c
omfortable using her own name and would later change the group’s name to
the Marcia Ball Band. Marcia and the Misery Brothers were just as popul
ar on the local scene as Ball’s previous band had been. The same year th
e group was formed\, Ball released her first recording\, a cover of Pats
 y Montana’s “I Want to Be a Cowboy’s Sweetheart\,” which was punctuated
with heartfelt yodels.\n\nIn 1978 Ball had her first appearance at the N
ew Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. She then released Circuit Queen o
n Capital Records\, a hybrid album of country music and rhythm and blues
. Circuit Queen was not well accepted\, and Ball would not record again
until 1983\, when she released Soulful Dress on Rounder Records. Soulful
Dress contains signature tunes such as the title track\, which features
the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan\, as well as Laverne Baker’s ballad “S
oul on Fire” and Chuck Berry’s Louisiana love song “Eugene.” The LP rece
ived warm praise and was followed in 1985 by Hot Tamale Baby.\n\nHot Tam
ale Baby was a mix of traditional blues and rhythm and blues with no dis
cernible country influence. The album’s sound is akin to what you might
hear at a bawdy Texas-Louisiana house party\, complete with accordionist
Clifton Chenier favorites. Ball’s early high water mark was achieved wi
th 1989′s Gatorhythms\, which features original ballads written by Ball
and some tasty old school rock ‘n’ roll. In 1990 she released Dreams Com
e True on the Antone label\, a collaboration with singers Lou Ann Barton
and Angela Strehli. Dreams Come True was produced by pianist Dr. John\,
one of Ball’s musical mentors in New Orleans. The album was recorded to
unite the three women\, who had spent years perfecting their music on s
tage at Antone’s\, a blues club and landmark in Austin.\n\nAfter a few y
ears of touring in the United States and Europe with her own band\, and
touring with Barton and Strehli to promote Dreams Come True\, Ball relea
sed Blue House on Rounder Records in 1994. The album underscored a new d
irection for Ball: she composed most of the songs on the album and utili
zed the acoustic guitar and mandolin\, both played by Rich Brotherton\,
for the first time in her recordings. Blue House features a haunting gos
pel melody and rousing piano anthem and also highlights Ball’s greatest
influences. Shades of Irma Thomas\, singer Bobby “Blue” Bland\, and pian
ists Professor Longhair\, Jelly Roll Morton\, and Dr. John may be detect
ed when listening to Ball’s surprisingly eclectic Blue House.\n\nAllowed
the type of creative freedom she could never enjoy at a larger label\,
 Ball’s Rounder work–largely co-produced by Scott Billington–made her a r
espected industry name. However\, despite the praise heaped upon such pr
ojects as the delightfully funky 1997 album Let Me Play With Your Poodle
\, the singer-songwriter’s works were not as vigorously promoted as thos
e by Rounder’s bluegrass wunderkind Alison Krause and she remained prima
rily a cult performer.\n\nHer final Rounder release saw her being teamed
with two of her chief vocal influences\, Tracy Nelson and Irma Thomas\,
for the 1998 release Sing It!. Boiling over with bluesy sass\, the disc
alternated solo spots by the proto-feminist divas with extremely appeal
ing trio collaborations. “I really think this album brought out the best
in all of us\,” Ball told Keri Leigh for Blues Revue. “And each one of
us got to relax a lit

DESCRIPTION:The musical pedigree of Grammy Award winner James “Superharp
” Cotton consists of a veritable who’s who in the world of the Blues. In
ducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2006\, the Smithsonian Institute i
n 1991\, and winner of countless W.C. Handy Blues Awards\, he has shared
the stage with B.B. King\, The Rolling Stones\, Johnny Winter\, the All
 man Brothers\, Santana\, Bonnie Raitt\, Led Zeppelin\, Janis Joplin\, Sa
m and Dave\, The Grateful Dead among many others.\n\nAn orphan at the ag
e of nine\, he was raised in Mississippi by his mentor\, Sonny Boy Willi
amson\, who remains famous for his many unique songs and innovative Delt
a Blues harmonica style. As a young teenager Cotton befriended Howlin’ W
olf and joined forces with him playing Mississippi and Arkansas juke joi
nts for two years. During that time Cotton hosted his own afternoon radi
o show in West Memphis and also recorded “Cotton Crop Blues” and three o
ther songs on Sun Records in Memphis. In 1954 when Muddy Waters needed a
harmonica player\, he found Cotton playing a club in Arkansas and took
him to Chicago. Cotton remained with Waters for 12 years not only playin
g shows but also recording with him on Chess Records. One of the highlig
hts of that period came when Cotton arranged the ever-popular anthem for
the blues\, “Got My Mojo Workin’”\, which was played for the first time
by the Muddy Waters Band at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1961.\n\nIn 19
66 Cotton formed his James Cotton Blues Band which continues to showcase
his immense talent and keeps him one of the most sought-after\, hard-dr
iving\, seminal blues musicians touring the world today.\n\nCotton passi
onately explains\, “My audience always tells me how I’m doing. If I look
out there and don’t like what I see\, I work harder.” His audiences are
still on their feet\, they enjoy themselves as much as he does\, and th
ere continue to be standing ovations night after night. You will have a
memorable evening with an international treasure and a true Living Legen
d of the Blues.\n\nThe year 2010 is Cotton’s 66th year in the entertainm
ent business. What an amazing adventure “Superharp” is experiencing with
  his little harmonica. EID:172080

DESCRIPTION:One of the last true links to the great folk traditions of t
his country\, with over 40 albums under his belt\, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott
is considered one of the country’s legendary foundations of folk music.
\n\nLong before every kid in America wanted to play guitar — before Elvi
s\, Dylan\, the Beatles or Led Zeppelin — Ramblin’ Jack had picked it up
and was passing it along. From Johnny Cash to Tom Waits\, Beck to Bonni
e Raitt\, Ry Cooder to Bruce Springsteen\, the Grateful Dead to The Roll
ing Stones\, they all pay homage to Ramblin’ Jack Elliott.\n\nIn the tra
dition of roving troubadours Jack has carried the seeds and pollens of s
tory and song for decades from one place to another\, from one generatio
n to the next. They are timeless songs that outlast whatever current mus
ical fashion strikes today’s fancy.\n\nThere are no degrees of separatio
n between Jack and the real thing. He is the guy who ran away from his B
rooklyn home at fourteen to join the rodeo and learned his guitar from a
cowboy. In 1950\, he met Woody Guthrie\, moved in with the Guthrie fam
ily and traveled with Woody to California and Florida\, from the redwood
forests to the Gulf Stream waters. Jack became so enthralled with the l
ife and composer of This Land Is Your Land\, The Dust Bowl Ballads\, and
a wealth of children’s songs that he completely absorbed the inflection
s and mannerisms\, leading Guthrie to remark\, “Jack sounds more like me
than I do.”\n\nIn 1954\, along with folksinging pals Frank Robinson and
Guy Carawan\, Jack journeyed south through Appalachia\, Nashville and t
o New Orleans to hear authentic American country music. He later made t
his the basis for his talking song\, 912 Greens.\n\nIn 1955 Jack married
and traveled to Europe\, bringing his genuine American folk\, cowboy an
d blues repertoire and his guitar virtuosity\, inspiring a new generatio
n of budding British rockers\, from Mick Jagger to Eric Clapton.\n\nWhen
he returned to America in 1961\, he met another young folksinger\, Bob
Dylan at Woody Guthrie’s bedside\, and mentored Bob. Jack has continued
as an inspiration for every roots-inspired performer since.\n\nAlong the
way he learned the blues first-hand from Leadbelly\, Mississippi John H
urt\, the Reverend Gary Davis\, Big Bill Broonzy\, Brownie Mcghee and So
nny Terry\, Jesse Fuller and Champion Jack Dupree.\n\nHe has recorded fo
rty albums\; wrote one of the first trucking songs\, Cup of Coffee\, rec
orded by Johnny Cash\; championed the works of new singer-songwriters\,
from Bob Dylan and Kris Kristofferson to Tim Hardin\; became a founding
member of Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue\; and continued the life of
the traveling troubadour influencing Jerry Jeff Walker\, Guy Clark\, Tom
Russell\, The Grateful Dead and countless others.\n\nIn 1995\, Ramblin’
Jack received his first of four Grammy nominations and the Grammy Award
for Best Traditional Folk Album\, for South Coast (Red House Records).
\nIn 1998\, President Bill Clinton awarded Jack the National Medal of the
Arts\, proclaiming\, “In giving new life to our most valuable musical t
raditions\, Ramblin’ Jack has himself become an American treasure.”\n\nI
 n 2000\, Jack’s daughter\, filmmaker\, Aiyana Elliott produced and direc
ted The Ballad of Ramblin’ Jack\, her take on Jack’s life and their frag
ile relationship\, winning a Special Jury Prize from the Sundance Film F
 estival.\n\nThrough it all—though agents\, managers\, wives and recordin
g companies have tried—Jack resisted being molded into a commercial comm
odity. He played his shows without a written set list or including any
songs that did not ring with his gut feeling of what mattered to him.\n
\nRamblin’ Jack’s life of travels\, performances and recordings is a test
ament to the America of lore\, a giant land of struggle\, hard luck and
sometimes even of good fortune. Ramblin’ Jack takes us to places that s
pur us on to the romance and passion of life in the tunes and voices of
real people.\n\nAt seventy-seven\, Ramblin’ Jack is still on the road\,
still seeking those people\, places\, songs and stories that are hand-cr
afted\, wreaking of wood and canvas\, cowhide and forged metal. You’ll
find him in the sleek lines of a long haul semi-truck\, in the rigging o
f an old sailing ship\, in the smell of a fine leather saddle.\n\nOpenin
g the show and accompaning Ramblin Jack will be Northern California duo
Nell Robinson and Jim Nunally.\n\nNell Robinson is a songwriter and voca
list\, and has performed on A Prairie Home Companion\, at The Kate Wolf
Folk Festival and the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival.\n\nJim Nunally
is an award-winning songwriter and guitarist\, and a recipient of two G
rammy Award certifications\, and has toured extensively with the David G
risman Bluegrass Experience and John Reischman and The Jaybirds.\n\nNell
and Jim were featured at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts with th
e show Soldier Stories to benefit military service members health issues
. This CD project is being produced by Grammy award winning producer Joe
Henry\, and is being filmed by PBS. EID:172552

DESCRIPTION:Boca do Rio is música orgânica. Live music inspired by the t
housands of musicians and the music lovers that have gone before us and
laid the rhythmic foundations of samba\, baião\, samba-reggae\, the danc
es for the orishas\, and all that gives homage to the beats. It is the A
frican diaspora alive through rhythms and pulses – it is the commonality
that binds humans to the air we breathe\, the food from which we nouris
h\, the water we imbibe\, and the love through which we flourish. Boca d
o Rio exists to share and celebrate music and everything that it brings
to our lives through the cross-pollination of the Americas. It’s the wat
er that flows from mountains to oceans\, from inside to out. It’s the ea
rth beneath our feet\, the soil beneath the concrete\, the minerals from
the stars that grace each of our cells. The San Francisco band Boca do R
io takes its name from the Portuguese “mouth of the river” – the place w
here myriad streams and sources converge into one powerful\, flowing\, p
hysical energy.\n\nKevin Welch on guitar and vocals:\nKevin Welch\, Boca
 ’s leader\, composer\, guitarist\, and vocalist\, embodies this concept
by virtue of his personal and musical history\, having lived in the Amaz
on and become fluent in Portuguese as well as immersed in – and transfor
med by – samba. In the mid-1990s he started the group Vivendo de Pão\,
which became a mainstay on San Francisco’s club and festival scene and o
pened for touring acts like Macy Gray and Los Van Van. For Boca do Rio
\, Welch has assembled a superb team of Brazilian and American musicians
to give voice to his vibrant compositions\, which he terms música organi
ca – music that is explicitly influenced by his connection to Brazil but
filtered through the sensibilities of his California base\, which he sh
ares with his versatile accompanists and musical partners.\n\nBand Membe
 rs:\nAlex Calatayud – Pandeiro\nJohn Evans – Bass\nScott Johnson – Drums

DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Arts presents\, Hawaiian string wizard an
d three time Grammy Nominee Led Kaapana and Hawaii’s twelve string guita
r master Mike Kaawa return for a concert at The Center for the Arts. Le
d Kaapana’s mastery of stringed instruments\, particularly slack key gui
tar\, and his extraordinary baritone and leo ki`eki`e (falsetto) voices
\, have made him a musical legend. He has been thrilling audiences for mo
re than 40 years. With easy-going style and kolohe (rascal) charm\, he h
as built a loyal corps of Led Heads from Brussels to his birthplace on t
he Big Island of Hawaii. Recognition by his peers earned Led Grammy nomi
nations in 2006\, 2007 and 2009.\n\nLike so many Hawaiians\, Led grew up
in a musical family. In the tiny black sand bay village of Kalapana\, t
here were few distractions. “We didn’t have electricity\, no television
\, not even much radio\,” says Led. “So we entertained ourselves. You cou
ld go to any house and everybody was playing music.”\n\nWhile recording
for Dancing Cat Records\, Led produced a number of solo projects\, duets
\, and a project with Allison Krauss\, Jerry Douglas\, and other bluegra
ss legends called Waltz of the Wind. He has worked with Dolly Parton\, C
het Atkins\, and many other Nashville notables. Back at home\, he has sh
ared his talents on recordings with most of Hawaii’s top talents\, inclu
ding Aunty Genoa Keawe\, Barney Isaacs\, The Ho`opi`i Brothers\, Melveen
Leed\, the Pahinui Brothers\, Amy Hanaiali`i\, and countless others. In
2008\, Led formed his own recording company\, Jus’ Press Productions\,
and released his Force of Nature CD\, with 12-string virtuoso Mike Kaawa
. The album earned a Grammy nomination in 2009 and won Led and Mike the
Favorite Entertainer Award at the 2009 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards.\n\nLed t
ours the US extensively and has also appeared in Belgium\, Germany\, Can
 ada\, Japan\, and Tahiti.\n\nMIKE KAAWA is Hawaii’s finest 12-string gui
tar player and one of the best known and highly regarded musicians in Ha
waii. He describes his music as “Hawaiian with an attitude”. Mike Kaawa
is an illuminating performer who has brightened some of Hawaii’s most po
pular stages and has captivated audiences with his enchanting stage pres
ence and vocal abilities. With strong instrumentation and distinct vocal
expression straight from his heart\, Mike has created his own unique so
und only few musicians have achieved. Teaming up with Ledward Kaapana\,
together they released Force of Nature late 2008 which earned a nominati
on for the 51st GRAMMY Award for Best Hawaiian Music Album. EID:172548

DESCRIPTION:Presented by The Center For The Arts\, Singer/songwriter Fat
oumata Diawara was raised in Mali and now lives in Paris. She has been
receiving rave reviews since the release of her new album Fatou. The al
bum was #1 on the European world music chart for six months.\n\nDiawara
fought her parents’ opposition to her artistic career\, and her culture’
s attitudes toward women\, to act in theater and film before beginning h
er musical career. She sang backup for\, among others\, fellow Malian an
d labelmate Oumou Sangare before striking out on her own.\n\nDiawara use
s elements of jazz\, pop\, and funk along with her ancestral Wassoulou t
radition in her songwriting and arrangements\, accompanying her voice wi
th rhythmical guitar playing and her own percussion work. Her lyrics tou
ch on such serious and personal subjects as female circumcision\, a woma
n’s right to choose her spouse\, and the songwriter’s own painful experi
ence with the African practice of being raised away from her parents.\n
\nJohn Paul Jones (bass)\, Toumani Diabate (kora)\, and Tony Allen (drums
) all make guest appearances on Fatou. Damon Albarn and Herbie Hancock a
lso have shown their appreciation for Diawara’s music\; she has performe
 d with Africa Express\, AfroCubism\, and Hancock’s Imagine project. In a
ddition to her own constant global touring\, Diawara performed as part o
f Albarn’s new project Rocket Juice and the Moon this past fall. (Albarn
’s super-group features himself\, Tony Allen\, and Flea.) Diawara played
a main role in the live shows and is featured on several tracks on the
studio album of the same name. She also recorded a track with soul veter

Miners Foundry and Sierra Stages will present Lettice and Lovage on Wed
nesday\, June 19\, 2013 at the Miners Foundry. Lettice and Lovage will b
e the third installment of Theater By The Book\, a series of informal pl

inning at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free with a $10 suggested donation. Ref
reshments will be available for purchase along with a no host bar.\n \n
Lettice and Lovage is a delightful comedy by Peter Shaffer\, author of A
madeus and Equus. Lettice Douffet\, a docent at Fustian House\, one of E
ngland’s most boring historical homes\, decides to liven up her tours by
inventing wildly theatrical “histories”\, thus coming to the attention
of Lotte Schoen\, an inspector of the Preservation Trust. The meeting of
the imaginative Lettice and the seemingly conventional Lotte leads to a
most unconventional – and riotous – friendship.

DESCRIPTION:Karla Bonoff has been described as one of the finest singer/
songwriters of her generation. And in her case\, that description is not
hyperbole.\n\nWith a career spanning four decades\, Bonoff has enjoyed
critical acclaim\, commercial success\, enduring popularity and the unwa
vering respect of her peers. In addition to achieving chart success with
her own recordings\, Karla has seen her songs become hits for such stel
lar artists as Bonnie Raitt\, Wynonna Judd and Linda Ronstadt. Many of B
onoff’s ballads are now pop classics. All the while\, she has continued
to tour extensively\, playing sold-out shows around the world. Karla’s m
oving vocals on her rich\, expressive songs is like standing beneath a s
parkling waterfall – refreshing\, exhilarating\, restorative. And hearin
g them live can be transformative.\n\nIn 2007\, nearly 40 years into her
writing\, recording and performing\, the singularly gifted singer/songw
riter had at last produced a live album. Karla Bonoff Live is a superb t
wo-CD set containing 21 songs\, including some of Bonoff’s most popular
material (“All My Life\,” “Someone to Lay Down Beside Me\,” “Tell Me Why
\,” and “Lose Again”) plus two new compositions. Many fans and critics p
refer Bonoff’s own renditions of her songs\, and they won’t be disappoin
ted here. Like her performances\, the instrumentation is clean and spare
\, giving Bonoff’s voice room to work its emotional magic on the listene
 r. Live is Bonoff’s first solo album since 1999\, when she released a 16
-song greatest hits collection\, All My Life: The Best of Karla Bonoff.
