Taking inspiration from a sound that straddles pleasure and pain, Moan features art work in a variety of media by UCCS Visual Art faculty and students as a part of the City Dionysia Festival. A maelstrom of violence, The Bacchae is a potent source for examining the heart of revelry, intoxication, and vengeance.
Opening reception: March 4, 6 – 9 pm. Closing reception (with a live performance of excerpts from the Bacchae score): April 2, 6 – 9 pm.

Teen SERT Mock Disaster

The objective of this exercise is to provide awareness around the importance of being prepared in the event of an emergency. The students have spent several hours learning, studying, and practicing various first aid and emergency techniques. This exercise is the FINAL EXAM for the Teen SERT students and they must work together as a team to put all of their acquired training skills to work. They will triage, treat, and transport multiple patients/victims of the simulated disaster. Agencies assisting in this effort are: Canon City Fire, Police, AMR. Our school drama department will provide victims who will be "moulaged" with various fake injuries. As school violence continues to take place around us, this hands-on exercise is sure to impact all who are involved.

Weather permitting, I plan to "stage" the disaster on the NORTH side of the school in a grass area we refer to as our practice football field.

I teach childbirth education classes that pull from many great resources such as Dr. Robert Bradley, the Lamaze Institute for Normal Birth, author Sheila Kitzinger and midwife Ina May Gaskin. We focus on breathing techniques and many different comfort techniques that I have learned from my experience attending births as a doula and a midwife assistant, both in the hospital setting and the home setting.

Classes are $250 for an 8 week course and includes multi-dimensional instruction, a ten chapter student notebook, and unlimited phone / email support.

The Palmer Lake Historical Society Presents "An Evening With Lucretia Vaile"

Join the Palmer Lake Historical Society for an entertaining and informative evening about the life of one of Palmer Lake's most influential citizens. Ms. Cathleen Norman, a member of the Historical Society, will portray Lucretia Vaile as she presents the life and contributions of Ms. Vaile through pictures and "recollections."

Lucretia Vaile's name has been associated with Palmer Lake since the 1880's when, as a small child, she came with her parents to spend the summers here. Throughout her lifetime she was interested in the cultural development of this mountain community. She suggested having the annual Yule Log ceremony. In 1968 she donated her home to Palmer Lake for an art gallery and was a charter member of the Palmer Lake Historical Society. She died in California in 1977. Her bequest to the town, along with additional funds from El Paso County, made it possible to build the Lucretia Vaile Library/Museum, a memorial of her contribution to the cultural heritage of Palmer Lake.

This program is free to the public. Refreshments will be served.

The Falcon Wanderers welcome you to their 13th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Walk on March 20th in Colorado Springs.
The walk begins and ends at the Modern Woodmen of America building, 2924 N. Beacon Street and proceeds through the old railroad community of Roswell. The 5k (3.1 miles) and 10k (6.2 miles) trails are rated 1 (very easy). Strollers can complete the course with some difficulty, but wheelchairs are not advised.

The Whittlers and Scrollers, who make and give away wooden toys to hospitals and other non-profit at Christmas time, along with their toys for soldiers Program, use the funds raised by the show. The Pikes Peak Whittlers are thrilled to announce their 28th annual woodcarving and woodworking show, sale, and competition. This year’s event will be open to the public from 10am-5pm on Saturday, March 27th and from 10am to 4pm on Sunday, March 28th. It will be held, again, at the Colorado Springs Shrine Club, just off Colorado Avenue at 6 South 33rd Street. Admission is $2 for adults, and children under 12 are free with an adult.

This year’s competition will feature “Best of Show,” “People’s Choice,” and “Carver’s Choice,” along with ribbons for dozens of specialized categories in three separate skill levels (novice, intermediate, and advanced)- including various carving categories, whittling, woodturning, scroll work, chip carving, and wood burning.

Besides the competition, club members and professional carvers from across the nation will have work for sale and/or display, and many professional woodworking retailers will be on hand with tools, tips, and plenty of encouragement.

The Pikes Peak Whittlers meet Wednesdays at 9am at Woodcraft (750 Garden of the Gods Blvd.) for open carving sessions, and will be available for pre-show photo and/or interview opportunities in the weeks before the show. The newest program is our TOYs for Soldiers. Our joint members make small wooden toys, which are collected and then mailed to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan to give to the children in the area they are assigned..
